Thanks to the great fares United published to Vegas a few weeks back, I got in on the action. For $94 I couldn’t resist a quick 24-hour trip to Vegas, especially since I’ve never been. I booked TPA-DEN-LAS for the outbound (that was all that was available for the cheap fare), leaving late in the evening on Saturday, and am returning on Sunday night, via a LAS-IAD-TPA routing. Unfortunately it’s the LAS-IAD redeye, which means I’ll be sleeping with Ted (probably for the first and last time), unless I get a bump.
Well, it seems like I’m not the only person heading to Vegas, which can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. It’s good because it means my shot for a bump is great on the return, but it’s bad because trying to standby when only a few seats are still being sold can be a challenge.
Right now I’m leaning towards taking the pre-6AM TPA-IAD flight followed by the 8:30AM IAD-LAS flight, which looked like a guarantee for standby availability up until today. Now it’s showing as Y5, which means they’re only selling five more seats. I think I’ll risk it, and if for whatever reason I don’t get on the IAD-LAS flight, I’ll try to standby for a more creative routing, like IAD-LAX-LAS or IAD-DEN-LAS. I have to be in Vegas by 4PM, as we’ll be recording the Upgrd Podcast live from Vegas this weekend.
Either way, I have a feeling it’ll be an adventure getting to Vegas. Oh, and in case anyone’s wondering, I’m staying at a Hilton property off the strip. Yes, I’m that much of a points slut.
Oh, and before I forget to mention, if anyone happens to be in town this weekend, feel free to join us for dinner on Saturday.
