Ford and I are in Hawaii this week for his birthday. This is my first time actually spending any substantial amount of time in Hawaii in a very long time, and we’ve had a lot of fun so far. I don’t love the timezone in terms of working, but other than that, it has been awesome. We’re visiting three different islands over our time here, so I’ll have a full review when this trip is over.
On the points and travel front, this week we’ve seen some great Amex Offers, more details of United’s reconfigured 777-200s, a new visa restriction between the US and Turkey, Emirates changing up their New Zealand strategy, and much more.
With that out of the way, here’s a recap of this week on the blog:
Through November 8, 2017, both the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express & Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Business Credit Card from American Express are offering sign-up bonuses of 70,000 SkyMiles plus 10,000 Medallion Qualifying Miles after spending $4,000 within three months, plus a $100 statement credit after making a Delta purchase within the first three months. The cards have $195 annual fees.
I consider these to be exceptional sign-up bonuses. I value SkyMiles at ~1.2 cents each, and after you add the statement credit and subtract the annual fee, I consider each of those sign-up bonuses to be worth ~$745, which is an incredible bonus. That doesn’t even factor in the 10,000 MQMs, which could be really valuable if going for status with Delta.
There’s one perk that I haven’t talked about much in the past, that I think is worth covering. Specifically, both the Platinum Delta Personal Amex and Platinum Delta Business Amex offer a free domestic main cabin companion certificate upon your account renewal every year. There are some terms associated with this, though this can easily get you outsized value compared to the $195 annual fee.
About 20 years ago the Star Alliance was formed, which was revolutionary at the time. SkyTeam and oneworld quickly joined the scene, and while they all still exist, the focus lately has been on joint ventures. After all, with these alliances having so many members, how much can these loosely affiliated airlines really have in common?
I frequently get questions from readers asking to explain the difference between these various agreements, so I figured it would be fun to do that in this post.
American Express Membership Rewards is offering a 30% bonus on points transfers to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club through November 30, 2017. This is the points currency accrued on cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express, The Business Platinum® Card from American Express, American Express® Gold Card, etc.
Ordinarily points transfer at a 1:1 ratio (in 1,000 point increments), while through this promotion you’d get 1,300 Flying Club miles for every 1,000 Membership Rewards points transferred.
