Update: This offer for The Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN has expired. Learn more about the current offers here.

Earlier this week American Express confirmed new earnings structures for both the The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum® Card from American Express.

  • The Personal Platinum Card will earn 5x points on airfare purchased directly with airlines
  • The Business Platinum Card will offer 1.5x Membership Rewards points on purchases of at least $5,000
  • The Business Platinum Card will offer 35% points back when using Membership Rewards Pay with Points to book a flight with your selected airline, or when booking a flight in first or business class on any airline

While the 5x points on airfare for the personal card is exciting, the potential for a 35% rebate with the Business Platinum card means you can get 1.35 cents per point out of all your Membership Rewards points towards a travel purchase. That’s a pretty good return, and one that makes the business card particularly compelling.

Even better, there is a new limited time offer to earn up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points on the Business Platinum card.

You can earn 50,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 and then an extra 50,000 points after you spend an additional $15,000 all on qualifying purchases within your first 3 months of Card Membership.

That’s a significant spending requirement, but keep in mind the Business Platinum card is also offering 1.5 points per dollar on purchases of $5,000 or more, for up to 1 million additional points per year.

If you’re a small business owner with upcoming large purchases, that can be a pretty great deal.

Keep in mind that American Express welcome bonuses are “once per lifetime” — I’ve had the Business Platinum card in the past, so while I might get the card again to take advantage of the improved benefits, I wouldn’t be eligible for the welcome bonus.

The card has a $595 annual fee, though comes with all kinds of perks which help offset it, including, a $200 annual airline fee credit.

On top of that, you can add up to 99 additional card members (and can set spending limits for each). You can add basic “Green” employee cards for no fee, but you can also secure Platinum versions for your employees. If you do, they receive all the same benefits, including:

You’ll have to crunch the numbers for yourself, but depending on your business situation the additional card member perks could be well worth the fees. And being able to offer lounge access at airports and hotels (with Hilton HHonors) is a super nice perk for employees who travel.

American Express Centurion Lounge DFW

Ben values Membership Rewards points at ~1.7 cents each, so 100,000 points are worth $1,700.  And that doesn’t account for all the perks you get, or the improved redemption rate through Pay With Points.

Bottom line

The new benefits for  are pretty compelling, particularly if you’re getting 35% of your points back when you use Membership Rewards points for a Pay with Points flight booking on your selected airline, or on Business/First tickets.

Combine that with the potential to earn up to 100,000 miles for new cardholders, and there’s really never been a better time to pick up The Business Platinum® Card from American Express.

  1. I feel like this has been around a while. Or I am very targeted because I’ve been getting a mailer with this offer every few months for the last few years.

  2. Hello, I have the Gold Business card and I’m interested in this offer. My question is, Do you know if AMEX will pull a credit report for a new app?

  3. 15k seems a bit steep for 100k points. I wish the 100k personal card (4K spend) offer would return…..

  4. If I had the Amex business platinum before under another business, and I reapplied with another business name and EIN, would I be eligible for the bonus? Thanks!

  5. So, this is for brand new cardholders, yes? Not customers who upgraded from AmEx Business Gold during the 50K promotion after $10,000 in spend?

With so many sign-up bonuses and upgrade bonuses floating around I’m having a hard time keeping track.

  6. @ Rohan Anand — Yep! The benefit terms say “Each Basic and Additional Business Platinum Card® Member is eligible for 10 complimentary single flight segment passes for Gogo inflight internet each calendar year.”

  7. I thought their policy was one signup bonus every 4 years now? Or is that only for personal Amex cards?

  8. Could someone point me to the language that says this offer is for first time card members only? I don’t think such language exists in this public offer.

  9. nevermind…the language shows up on the application page, even though it doesn’t show up among the offer terms and conditions.

  10. nevermind…the language shows up on the application page, even though it doesn’t show up among the offer terms and conditions.

  11. $10,000 all on qualifying purchases within your first 3 months of Card Membership.? what is the list of qualifying? how about if need to do repairs in my home? I don’t get the ” qualifying purchases” part..thanks

  12. @ Elle — Correct, that would count. The point is that cash advances, etc., wouldn’t count towards that limit. But any “normal” purchase would.

  13. FYI, just got in mail today for an offer for AMEX Platinum and it comes with 100K Membership Rewards Points (after $3K spend in 3 months). AMEX website still shows 40K.
