Updated: 2 days ago

As someone who travels nearly constantly while also running a small business of my own, I absolutely appreciate the need to find the right business credit cards. Regardless of the size of your operation, or how much revenue you generate each year, there are ways to maximize your expenses and otherwise leverage your business spending to earn lucrative rewards. Here are a few of my tips for choosing the best credit card for your business:

  1. Consider your current spending — If you currently spend a ton on fuel, for example, you’ll want to make sure you’re earning bonus points on all those gas station purchases. If you have even a few folks on a company phone plan, getting 3x or 5x on mobile phone services will rack up quickly. I know of at least one OMAAT reader who is earning almost a million points a year from bonus points on advertising expenses!
  2. Stay organized — Keeping business expenses separate certainly makes tax time easier, but even on a monthly basis having your business purchases sorted makes doing expense reports much easier. Whether you are connecting your bank feeds to your accounting software or Expensify (or using a card like Brex for Startups that links everything automatically), this can save your entire company time every month.
  3. Evaluate perks and benefits — Beyond the bookkeeping and purchase protection advantages, there are other perks of using business credit cards. These can range from having rental car insurance on business trips (saving CDW fees on every rental), to airport lounge access and hotel elite status. Not only can these perks reduce stress, saving your attention for more important decisions, but even small businesses can save thousands of dollars a year.
  4. Don’t forget foreign transaction fees — For overseas business trips a company can save up to 3% just by having their team switch to a card with no foreign exchange fees. Even if your business doesn’t require much travel outside the U.S., think about if you have any Canadian or other international suppliers; you could be earning rewards for all those purchases without paying extra fees.

Best Business Credit Cards with Travel Rewards for December 2019

In addition to offering valuable benefits for small business owners, and incredible earnings rates, some of the best credit card sign-up bonuses are on business credit cards. It’s not uncommon to earn 70,000 – 100,000 points (or even more) after being approved for a card and spending a certain amount in the first few months.

Business cards also offer tremendous rewards, with bonus categories that are relevant to the purchases you’re making every month. The points you earn can often be combined with your personal cards, so you can choose whether you want to reinvest the miles into your business, saving on out-of-pocket costs, or use them for a getaway of your own. Here are the best business credit cards for travel rewards available today:

Best Credit Card For Business Travelers

If you’re traveling extensively within the U.S. for work, start with considering a credit card that will help you earn airline status or a card that will save you from the worst rooms in a hotel (and maybe throw in free breakfast). Having access to the airport lounge can make a huge difference in terms of my productivity, so I keep several cards that ensure I have wifi and a quiet (or quieter, airports being what they are) place to work.

In some cases, particularly if you do contract or consulting work, you’ll want to look into getting a small business card of your own. This can help you stay organized, keeping those expenses separate from your personal costs, and allow you take advantage of more relevant bonus categories.

Who is eligible for a business card?

Getting approved for a small business credit card is easier than you might think. You don’t need to have a big company, and don’t even need to be incorporated. A small side business with limited business revenue makes you eligible for a business credit card, which could include selling things on eBay, having a rental property, and freelancing.

It goes without saying that you should always answer credit card applications honestly. You might be pleasantly surprised by how easily you’ll get approved.

Beyond that, if your company policy lets you use your own card, look to earn bonus points for your reimbursable expenses. Whether you’re shipping supplies to a conference, buying flights, or entertaining clients, the points will rack up quickly! You’ll also want to make sure you’re using a card with trip delay coverage, so you don’t have to worry about extra costs to get to a meeting when flights are delayed. Here are the best credit cards for business travelers (who don’t necessarily want a small business card) available today:

There are so many reasons to get a business credit card, and some of the best travel credit cards right now are designed for business. I use a combination of cards to ensure I’m getting the most from my spending, and have been impressed at the travel rewards I’ve been able to earn through purchases I was going to make for my business anyway.
