While the booking window for this is limited, Virgin Atlantic is offering 40% off award tickets in all cabins for travel between London and Miami.

With this discount you’d end up paying the following amounts for roundtrip travel (one-way travel costs half the number of miles, and roughly half of the fees as well):

  • Economy: 15,000 miles + $480 in taxes & carrier imposed surcharges
  • Premium Economy: 27,000 miles + $640 in taxes & carrier imposed surcharges
  • Upper Class: 57,000 miles + $1,295 in taxes & carrier imposed surcharges

The catch is that there’s a limited window where this is available, as this is only valid for travel between February 14 and March 14, 2018. The other catch is that this is valid for roundtrip travel or for one-way travel originating in London, though I’m not getting the discount to price for one-way travel originating in Miami. So this is most useful for those based in the UK, or those based in the US looking for a return ticket from Europe to the US.

Availability over this period is quite good, and being able to redeem 28,500 miles plus paying ~$600 for a one-way Upper Class ticket is a solid deal, as is being able to redeem 13,500 miles plus ~$320 for a one-way premium economy ticket.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is transfer partners with all major transferable points currencies, so the points are easy to come by. That means there are potentially lots of great ways to earn points that can be transferred to Virgin Atlantic, using credit cards like these:

  1. I find these taxes and fees coming the last few years ridiculous and at times they are more than the competitive price without miles! “Loyalty” programs have become the latest marketing con job…You get more miles for free by just getting a credit card than you could reasonably earn flying! My wife and I have “earned” well over 300k miles/points without stepping on a plane in the last year and spending under 20k in charges and $1000 in fees…thanks to your posts Lucky!

On top of this the plans erode faster than one can earn miles for all but the heavy travelers.

  2. VA Upper Class is rubbish. The “suite” is only an inch wider than PE. The cabin has about 5 too many seats and the angle is ridiculous. To AA’s credit, I’m finding decent award availability to LHR on there metal’s premium product for the next year. Between the hard product and the fees, hard pass.
