The Citi Strata Premier® Card is one of the most rewarding mid-range credit cards out there, and I think it’s often overlooked. People tend to gravitate toward competing cards from American Express or Chase, but the Strata Premier has a combination of features that’s hard to beat, especially now that American AAdvantage is a ThankYou transfer partner.

For just $95 a year, you get 3x points in five major spending categories, a $100 annual hotel credit, access to all 19 Citi ThankYou transfer partners at the best ratios, and no foreign transaction fees. When you pair it with the no annual fee Citi Double Cash® Card, it becomes one of the best card combos in the game.

In this post, I’ll go through everything that makes this card so valuable, including the welcome offer, bonus categories, hotel credit, redemption options, and how to build a winning card strategy around it.

Citi Strata Premier® Card
Why we like this card
In my opinion, the Citi Strata Premier® Card offers the most rewarding bonus categories of any mid-range credit card, as the card offers 3x points in multiple categories. I also love Citi ThankYou points, and get huge value by transferring them to airline partners, especially in conjunction with a transfer bonus.

Citi Strata Premier bonus

Welcome offer: 60,000 ThankYou points

The Citi Strata Premier is offering a welcome bonus of 60,000 ThankYou points after spending $4,000 within three months. I value ThankYou points at 1.7 cents each, so to me that bonus is worth about $1,020. That makes it one of the better credit card bonuses available.

Those 60,000 points can earn you at least $600 in cash value, or can be transferred to airline and hotel partners for potentially much more. Since a lot of people don’t have this card yet, these are some easy rewards to pick up.

I should mention that we’ve seen bigger offers on this card in the past, so if you’re specifically holding out for the biggest possible bonus, it could be worth waiting. But the current offer is still very solid.

Strata Premier eligibility and application rules

The welcome bonus isn’t available if you’ve received a bonus on this exact card (or the old Citi Premier, as it was previously known) in the past 48 months. Beyond that, eligibility is independent from other Citi ThankYou cards, so you’re fully eligible even if you already have the Citi Strata Card or Citi Strata Elite Card.

The standard Citi application rules apply: one card every eight days, and at most two every 65 days.

Citi Strata Premier fees

$95 annual fee

The Strata Premier has an annual fee of $95, with no cost for authorized users. In an era of rising credit card fees, paying under $100 a year for this level of rewards and perks is a great deal. Any spending by authorized users contributes to your points balance, which is a nice bonus.

When you factor in the $100 annual hotel credit (more on that below), the card can essentially pay for itself.

No foreign transaction fees

Unlike many cards at this price point, the Strata Premier has no foreign transaction fees. That makes it an excellent card for purchases abroad. You’ll earn 3x points on international dining, hotels, and airfare without extra charges.

Earning points with the Citi Strata Premier

This is where the Strata Premier really shines. The card offers what I’d argue are the best bonus categories of any mid-range credit card, covering five categories that make up a huge chunk of most people’s spending.

3x ThankYou points on five categories

The Strata Premier earns 3x points on:

  • Dining: restaurants, cafes, bars, fast food, takeout, and delivery. Generally won’t include bakeries, caterers, or restaurants inside hotels, grocery stores, or department stores.
  • Gas and EV charging: gas stations and EV charging stations. Won’t include purchases at warehouse clubs, convenience stores, or merchants not classified as gas stations or EV charging.
  • Supermarkets: grocery stores and supermarkets. Won’t include warehouse clubs, convenience stores, discount stores, specialty vendors, bakeries, or meal kit delivery services.
  • Airfare: flights purchased directly with airlines or through a travel agency. This generally includes ticket costs and other fees associated with airline tickets.
  • Hotels: hotels booked directly or through a travel agency, including incidental hotel charges beyond just the room rate.

There are no caps on how many bonus points you can earn, and these categories apply globally, not just in the US. Based on my 1.7 cent valuation, earning 3x points is like getting a 5.1% return in each of these categories. That’s outstanding for a $95 card.

For most people, dining, gas, and supermarkets alone cover a huge portion of everyday spending, which is what makes this card so effective day-to-day.

10x ThankYou points on Citi Travel bookings

The card also earns 10x points on hotels, rental cars, and attractions booked through the Citi Travel portal at cititravel.com. Based on my valuation, that’s like a 17% return, which is exceptional.

That said, this won’t be for everyone. If you’re staying at a major hotel chain, you typically won’t earn hotel loyalty points or receive elite perks on third-party bookings. But if you’re not brand-loyal or you’re staying at an independent hotel, this can be incredibly rewarding.

Earn 3x ThankYou points on flight purchases

How to redeem Strata Premier points

The Strata Premier gives you full access to the Citi ThankYou ecosystem, which means the best possible redemption options.

Cash redemption

You can redeem points toward purchases at up to 1.0 cent per point for travel, or 0.75 cents for cash back. This isn’t the most exciting option, but it’s there if you need it.

Transfer to 19 airline and hotel partners

This is where the real value is. The Strata Premier lets you transfer ThankYou points to all 19 partners at the best possible ratios, mostly 1:1. That includes programs like Air France-KLM Flying Blue, American AAdvantage, Avianca LifeMiles, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Emirates Skywards, Etihad Guest, EVA Air Infinity MileageLands, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Singapore KrisFlyer, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, among others.

I want to specifically call out the value of American AAdvantage as a transfer partner. I’d argue it’s the most valuable of the “big three” US carrier frequent flyer programs, and Citi ThankYou is the only transferable points currency that offers these transfers. That alone gives the Strata Premier a unique edge.

If you also have Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One miles, or Chase Ultimate Rewards, there’s some overlap with partners. American AAdvantage access is exclusive to Citi.

Unlocking points on other Citi cards

Having the Strata Premier also upgrades the value of your other Citi ThankYou cards. ThankYou points can be pooled with your Strata Premier points and transferred at the full premium ratios. Without a premium card like this, those cards only transfer at a reduced rate (roughly 30% less) and can’t access American AAdvantage at all.

Strata Premier perks and benefits

$100 annual hotel credit

Once per calendar year, the Strata Premier gives you $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more, excluding taxes and fees, when booked with Citi Travel®. Here are the key details:

  • Book online at CitiTravel.com or by phone at 1-833-737-1288
  • The reservation must be made by the primary cardmember, though the stay can be for an authorized user
  • You must pre-pay with your Strata Premier Card, ThankYou points, or a combination
  • If you cancel a booking that used the credit, the benefit stays available for the same calendar year
  • Package rates (air + hotel, hotel + car) don’t qualify
  • Can’t be combined with other thankyou.com promotions

What’s nice is that you can also earn 10x points on the hotel spending through Citi Travel, stacking the credit with the bonus points for a really strong deal.

How to use the hotel credit

Log into your account at CitiTravel.com using your Strata Premier credentials. When you search for hotels, you’ll see a prompt asking if you want to apply the $100 credit. Select it, and the discount will automatically appear during checkout. Simple.

Being strategic with the hotel credit

My biggest tip: use this credit at an independent hotel where you’re not giving up chain loyalty points or elite perks by booking through Citi Travel. Compare prices first. Major hotel chains sometimes offer member-only rates that beat what Citi Travel shows. If you aim for a stay close to the $500 minimum, you’ll get the best return (up to 20% off).

For many people, this credit alone can cover the $95 annual fee, which is a big deal.

How does Strata Premier’s hotel credit compare to Chase Sapphire Preferred?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers a $50 annual hotel credit with no minimum spending requirement, so you could save $50 on a $50 stay. The Citi credit is larger ($100) but requires a $500 minimum. Which is better depends on your hotel habits. Here’s my full comparison of the Strata Premier vs Sapphire Preferred.

Other benefits

The Strata Premier is a World Elite Mastercard, so it comes with some additional perks like savings with Lyft and ShopRunner. Not the main draw, but worth knowing about.

Is the Citi Strata Premier Card worth it?

The Citi Strata Premier Card offers the most rewarding bonus categories of any mid-range credit card, in my opinion, as the card offers 3x points in five different categories.

I also love Citi ThankYou points, and get huge value by transferring them to airline partners, especially in conjunction with a transfer bonus. It’s also especially exciting that American AAdvantage is now a transfer partner, which will make the program more interesting for many travelers. So I think there’s huge merit to picking up this card, though let’s address a few related points.

Building the best Citi Strata card strategy

The Strata Premier is excellent on its own, but it becomes even more powerful when paired with the right companion cards.

Strata Premier + Citi Double Cash (Best value combo)

I consider this one of the best credit card duos out there. The no annual fee Citi Double Cash earns 2x ThankYou points on all purchases (1x when you buy, 1x when you pay). Pair it with the Strata Premier, and you’ve got:

  • 3x points on dining, gas, EV charging, supermarkets, airfare, and hotels
  • 2x points on everything else
  • Full access to all 19 transfer partners at the best ratios
  • Total annual fees: just $95

That means you’re earning at least 2x transferable points on every single dollar you spend. For those looking to earn AAdvantage miles, getting 2x miles on everyday spending is pretty amazing.

Strata Premier + Citi Strata Card (Bonus category maximizer)

The no annual fee Citi Strata℠ Card adds 3x points on transit, gas, and a self-select category (like streaming or fitness), plus 5x on Citi Travel bookings. If you want to stack even more bonus categories on top of what the Strata Premier offers, this is a solid addition.

What about the Citi Strata Elite?

The $595 Citi Strata Elite Card is a different kind of product. Its bonus categories aren’t quite as well-rounded as the Strata Premier’s. It offers 6-12x on Citi Travel bookings, 3-6x on dining, and 1.5x on everything else. Where the Strata Elite stands out is in its perks, including Priority Pass lounge access, four annual Admirals Club day passes, up to $300 in annual hotel credits, up to $200 in Splurge credits, and up to $200 in Blacklane credits.

If you can take advantage of those credits and lounge access, the Strata Elite could be worth it. But for most people, the Strata Premier is the easier card to justify. You could also consider having both. The Strata Elite for its perks, and the Strata Premier for its superior everyday earning structure.

Bottom line

The Citi Strata Premier is an underrated mid-range card that deserves a lot more attention. For $95 a year, you get 3x points in five categories that cover most of your everyday spending, a $100 hotel credit that can pay for the annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and full access to 19 ThankYou transfer partners, including American AAdvantage.

Pair it with the Citi Double Cash Card for 2x points on everything else, and you’ve got one of the best card duos available. You’ll earn 2-3x transferable points on all your spending for under $100 in total annual fees.

With the ThankYou ecosystem stronger than ever, the Strata Premier is the card that ties it all together. Whether you’re looking to earn cash back, airline miles, or hotel points, this card gives you the flexibility and earning power to make it happen.

Is the Citi Strata Premier $95 annual fee worth it?
In most cases, yes. The $100 annual hotel credit alone can cover the fee if you book a hotel stay of $500 or more through Citi Travel. Beyond that, the 3x earning rate on everyday categories like dining, gas, and supermarkets means you’re accumulating points much faster than you would with a free card. If you value ThankYou points at 1.7 cents each, you only need to spend about $1,900 per year in bonus categories to earn back $95 in value from the bonus alone, and most people spend far more than that.
How does the Citi Strata Premier $100 annual hotel credit work?
Once per calendar year, you get $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more (before taxes) when booking through CitiTravel.com. The credit applies automatically at checkout. If you cancel, the credit becomes available again for the same year. You can also stack it with the 10x Citi Travel earning rate for extra value.
Is the Citi Strata Premier better than the Chase Sapphire Preferred?
Both are strong mid-range cards with $95 annual fees. The Strata Premier has the edge in bonus categories. It offers 3x on five categories (dining, gas, supermarkets, airfare, hotels) compared to the Sapphire Preferred’s narrower bonuses. The Strata Premier also has a larger hotel credit ($100 vs. $50). The Sapphire Preferred has its own strengths, like the Chase travel ecosystem. But in terms of everyday earning power, I give the Strata Premier the edge.
Can I earn American AAdvantage miles with the Citi Strata Premier?
Yes, and this is one of the card’s biggest draws. Citi ThankYou is the only transferable points currency that lets you transfer to American AAdvantage at a 1:1 ratio. So every 3x point you earn on dining, gas, or supermarkets can become 3 AAdvantage miles. Pair the Strata Premier with the Citi Double Cash for 2x AAdvantage miles on all other spending.
Should I get the Citi Strata Premier or the Citi Strata Elite?
For most people, the Strata Premier is the better value. It has more well-rounded bonus categories, a lower annual fee ($95 vs. $595), and unlocks the same full access to transfer partners. The Strata Elite makes sense if you travel frequently and can take advantage of lounge access, the $300 hotel credit, and other premium perks. Some people may even want both. The Strata Elite is great for perks, while the Strata Premier is solid for everyday earning.

“Travel” does not include train tickets and taxis. Possibly not ride-share either .

Sounds like a great credit card, especially because of the supermarkets and restaurants. I shop mostly at Whole Foods, so I wouldn’t use it anyway because I use the Amazon card (5% back) and am happy with the CSR.

Hear horror though about Citi customer service.
