Surprise: Qatar Airways Plans New First Class

26

In late 2023, we saw a major shakeup to management at Qatar Airways, as longtime CEO Akbar Al Baker resigned, with Badr Mohammed Al Meer being appointed the new CEO. He has been implementing some pretty significant changes at the airline, and here’s the latest example of that.

Qatar Airways backtracks on first class plans

Qatar Airways’ new CEO had an interesting interview with CNBC, talking about how it’s “a new era” at the Gulf carrier, following a multi-month “war room” review of the business. He’s not only looking to refresh the carrier’s strategy, but also to reset relationships with suppliers.

As part of this review, Al Meer has decided that a long haul first class product does have a future at the airline. For context, when Al Baker was CEO, he made it clear that he planned to eliminate first class, claiming that there’s no need for the product, because the carrier’s business class is so good:

“Why should you invest in a subclass of an aeroplane that already gives you all the amenities that first class gives you. I don’t see the necessity.”

Al Meer has a different perspective, claiming that the airline is committed to maintaining first class, and is well into developing a new product. As he explained:

“We wanted to combine the experience of flying commercial and flying on a private jet and develop something new. We are 70% to 80% ready. We are only finalizing colors and small touches, but hopefully we will be able to announce it very soon.”

Now, personally I’m happy to see Qatar Airways’ commitment to maintaining, and even growing, first class. However, I am a bit skeptical of the timeline here. Is the airline really 70-80% done with developing something, and it’s really just working on the finishes?

  • Al Meer became CEO as of November 2023, so he has been in his role for around four months
  • He claims that airline has completed a multi-month review of the business, and previously the airline wasn’t planning on maintaining first class
  • He now wants to develop a first class that’s a hybrid between Qsuites and a private jet

Developing new world-class airline seats often takes several years, so the timeline here really isn’t adding up. You can’t be in your role for four months and do a review lasting several months, while also creating a new product from scratch that’s nearly done. So that raises a few possibilities:

  • Is Al Meer fibbing with how far along the airline is with developing its new first class?
  • Was Qatar Airways already working on a new first class under Al Baker, just secretly, and the airline hadn’t announced that?
  • Is Qatar Airways just choosing an existing, generic first class product, so there’s not actually that much design needed?

Which planes will get Qatar Airways’ new first class?

As of now, we have no additional details about Qatar Airways’ new first class plans. For some context, currently Qatar Airways has long haul first class on two aircraft:

  • All Airbus A380s, which the airline intended to retire during the pandemic, but brought back due to the dispute the company had with Airbus
  • A few Boeing 777s, which Qatar Airways picked up from Cathay Pacific, so the airline just maintained the cabins installed on those jets

On top of that, the airline markets its forward cabin on many regional flights as first class, though in terms of seating, that’s truly business class.

On which planes could we see the new first class product introduced? The airline has up to 50 Boeing 777-9s on order, and this will eventually become Qatar Airways’ flagship aircraft. I think it’s safe to assume these are the planes that will primarily be getting first class.

Back in the day, Al Baker had first intended to install first class on these jets, and then backtracked. So it’s not surprising to see that decision reversed again.

Al Meer states that the company has put out an RFP (request for proposal) with both Airbus and Boeing for a new aircraft order. He’s promising a big order, but isn’t stating which part of the fleet is being refreshed. When it comes to wide body aircraft, Qatar Airways just has some outstanding Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A350-1000 orders, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see those fleets grow further. However, I wouldn’t assume that those jets will necessarily feature first class.

Bottom line

Qatar Airways’ new CEO is changing things up at the oneworld airline. While former CEO Akbar Al Baker pledged to eliminate first class, new CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer has a different strategy, and plans to introduce a new first class product. Unfortunately we don’t have much information beyond that, so only time will tell how good this product will be, and when it will be introduced.

What do you make of Qatar Airways’ plans to introduce a new first class?

I don’t think it’s a case of right or wrong, or change of strategy. Al Baker was probably right at the time when Q Suite led the way in Business Class Suites. Now that everyone’s catching up and the ceiling is of how much more you can offer in a business class seat, they look to First for some upmarket differentiation. That and learning about the Emirates Halo effect!

He may introduce premium economy too. With 3-4-3 in economy on the 777s and 3-3-3 on the 787s, Qatar Airways really needs premium economy.

Agreed. Would be surprising if they don't do it, now that Emirates has.

  3. Henry Guest

I think this is great news and a smart move. Having a nice first class product is also really good marketing for premium flyers.

To my surprise, the a380 is still showing on the schedules for Qatar into recently released next year timetables. On premium heavy routes such as London and Paris, if they can fill the business class then it may well work.

All companies have a "wish" plan under review.

Al Baker would have been looking at F-class concepts for over a year, so the new CEO would have reviewed those. The plan for F would not have started from scratch upon his arrival.

While this strategy sounds good, QR should definitely improve first class soft product too. It really does seem like their first class soft product is not that different from that of their business class.

“We wanted to combine the experience of flying commercial and flying on a private jet and develop something new." Maybe I'm setting the expectations too high, but that sounds like their new first class could be fully enclosed from floor...

I think you are reading his comments wrong. He is simply saying that the design stage is 70% done. Where do you read that the implementation is 70% done? Design and concept could easily be done in a few months. But the actual production of the seats, certifications, and installations will probably take a few years. Clearly this will happen solely on the A380 so I don't see it being such a big deal regardless.

    Halo effect. Pretty simple.

And ceo Al Meer isn't as ideological as his predecessor who thinks they offer a proper First Class.

So the A380s came back because of the issues with the A350s, but my understanding is that they may now stick around because the 777-9 is no where in sight anytime soon. Any insights on this? It's nice to see them flying into LHR, but just unfortunate that don't have the newest product.

I keep hoping QR will pull a BA on their A380s and update them, but I know the chances are low.

    1. Nick Guest

The oldest QR A380 is 10 years old (with the newest one being 6 years old), so I guess it's now the time for them to refurbish A380 interior. I guess QR could install business class suites on their B789s for A380 refurbishment (if it's gonna happen, after all)...

because the 777-9 is no where in sight anytime soon.

And for those who aren't familiar with just how bad it is, with that aircraft:

Emirates has taken over from Lufthansa as the expectant 777X launch customer, and they will receive their aircraft 13yrs after placing their launch order.......

.......tying the all-time record, set by Concorde.

And THAT was an all-new supersonic aircraft, designed by slide rule in the 1960s; as opposed...

It's insane how much of an F-up that Boeing has become. :(

I visited the Al Safwa lounge at DOH in December 2023, and I had a really interesting and detailed conversation with the lounge receptionist. He answered a lot of my questions, so I asked if there were any plans for this lounge to be maintained in the future since QR is planning on eliminating long-haul First Class in the coming years. To respond, he didn't deny any comment, but he just said that this lounge...

F.Y.I - He also told me that the closure of the Al Safwa lounge late last year was because they needed to replace the HVAC system in the lounge. It was routine and had to be done because it hadn't been changed since the lounge originally opened.

Unlike their American counterparts, it turns out the employee gossip is accurate here lol.

YESSS!!!!!! Deservedt. Periodt. The Al Safwa lounge is too good to only be reserved to GCC & A380 passengers. Can’t wait for the London debut

Preach it. There’s advertising and there’s the glorious mess on this blog that actually makes it difficult to read the content you’re coming for.

Perhaps it's like Marriott, as long as revenue keeps increasing, complaints from the loyal will be ignored.

really annoying. Wasn't a problem before

Just get adblock, y'all. Works great on both my desktop and phone.

I had the same issue like a week ago or so. The full screen ads really threw me off (I thought for a sec that I was on TPG's website). But, for some reason, I'm back to being shown the usual smaller ads at the bottom of the screen.

    6. Kendall Guest

I haven't seen an ad in years. There are solutions to this you know

    7. PaulW Guest

I find it especially ironic when the ad is actually advertising not only the site I am on, but the story I am actually reading.

I'm Australia based and zero ads!
Blame your ISP as it's not Ben.

Has it ever been revealed/confirmed why Al Baker departed so abruptly?

@ ConcordeBoy -- Nope, and I haven't even heard any reliable rumors. I'd sure be curious to know. I've gotta say, I'm impressed by Al Meer so far...
