Community Review: New MLE Airport (Departures And The Koveli Lounge)

If the arrival side of the ‘new’ Velana International Airport (MLE) is about relief (see Part 1 here), the departure side is where Terminal 1 genuinely starts to feel like a modern international aviation hub.

Say goodbye to the soul-crushing check-in queues of the legacy terminal where passengers used to spill out onto the curbside pavement in the stifling Maldivian heat. Heading back out through Terminal 1 transforms the end of your trip from a logistical headache into a smooth, air-conditioned send-off.

A Check-In Journey

Approaching the new terminal by road (or boat) sets a different tone, with sweeping structural lines and a sleek, contemporary façade that looks like sand, shells, and waves. When you step inside, the vast scale of the departures hall opens up beneath soaring white wave-patterned ceilings and huge glass walls that filter in natural light.

With 47 check-in desks now available, lines move significantly faster than they used to. Once you clear security and make your way airside, the journey through the terminal feels bright and deliberate:

• The Duty-Free Tunnel: One of the most striking visual features of the new departure concourse is the glowing, high-tech blue digital tunnel leading you directly into the main retail and duty-free areas. It gives off major futuristic airport vibes. (I’d give it a ‘Yowzers!’ if I could.)
• Other Services & Gates: There are ample amenities in the new terminal, like a dining area with food for purchase (local and international chains), a prayer room, smoking room, currency exchange, room for nursing mothers, ample clean public restrooms, etc. At the time, there were gates A1-8 (actual jet-bridges), and B1-3 (buses). Ideally, you get lucky and get to experience the new gates!
• Local Identity: Unlike generic airport architecture anywhere in the world, Terminal 1 peppers in thoughtful Maldivian design elements — including minimalist wall maps outlining the island atolls and regional boutique displays showcasing local craftsmanship right alongside high-end retail. (Personally, I’m a huge fan of the boutique ‘Authentic Maldives,’ which sells these relatively affordable — USD 55 when I was there — yet stylish necklaces, including manta rays and sea turtles with different colors. Kind of nice to collect a new one for each visit to the country, or to gift them to others. Just an idea. *wink*)

The Koveli Lounge: A Massive Upgrade (With A Catch)

If you are flying business or first class — or hold qualifying elite status with carriers like Qatar Airways (oneworld Sapphire/Emerald), Emirates (Gold/Platinum), Virgin Atlantic (SkyTeam Elite Plus), or Singapore Airlines (Star Alliance Gold) — your departure will likely route you to the new Koveli Lounge, located airside near Gate A4. Just a YMMV note here, as airlines treat status and access differently.

Compared to the Leeli Lounge of the old terminal, Koveli is simply stunning:

• The Space: Spanning over 1,200 square meters, the lounge offers plenty of breathing room with modern seating, dedicated quiet areas, a kids’ play zone, international outlet adapters, and relatively stable Wi-Fi.
• The Showers: Prepping for an overnight journey across multiple time zones, the somewhat small shower suites are refreshing after a humid transfer day from your resort. (Better than the lack of a shower at Leeli before.)
• Slight Catch: Still, I’d manage your expectations. First, it is not currently a Priority Pass lounge, so while there are fewer crowds, it’s ‘not great, not terrible’ if that was your only way in there. Second, due to local regulations and customs, there is no alcohol, so celebratory end-of-trip cocktails will have to wait for later. Finally, the food did not look that appetizing to me, so I held off. Perhaps, after a week of delicious seafood in the Maldives, you can wait until the meal on your flight. Then again, as I like to say, ‘you do you.’ Bah!

Bottom Line

Leaving paradise used to be universally painful, mostly because the old MLE airport infrastructure felt like it was stuck half a century behind the world-class resorts it served. Terminal 1 finally bridges that gap.

Between the spacious check-in flow, the modern airside design, and a proper contract lounge like Koveli, the administrative bookend of a Maldives vacation is no longer something to dread.
