Update: These offers for the Citi Premier℠ Card and the Citi Prestige® Card have expired. Learn more about the current offers here.
Citi ThankYou has just announced their latest transfer bonus — you can receive a 30% points bonus when you transfer Citi ThankYou points to JetBlue TrueBlue through May 19, 2018.
Assuming you have the Citi Premier℠ Card or Citi Prestige® Card, ThankYou points ordinarily convert into TrueBlue points at 1,000:800 ratio (if you have the Citi Preferred, the ratio is ordinarily 1,000:500). Assuming you have one of those two premium cards, the transfer ratio during this bonus will be 1,000:1,040.
This is a pretty solid transfer bonus. In general converting Citi ThankYou points into JetBlue points isn’t a good value without a transfer bonus, though with a bonus it can be a good deal.
TrueBlue is a revenue based frequent flyer program, and typically TrueBlue points can be redeemed towards the cost of a ticket at the rate of about 1.5 cents per point, and sometimes even more than that. In other words, with the current transfer bonus you can get a bit over 1.5 cents per ThankYou point towards the cost of a JetBlue ticket.
But it potentially gets even better than that. If you have JetBlue Plus Card, you get a 10% refund on all your points redemptions, which helps stretch your points even further. So assuming you have the card, you’ll be able to get almost 1.7 cents of JetBlue airfare per Citi ThankYou point, which is a solid value. Sometimes it gets even better than that, as JetBlue has award sales, though they typically don’t last long and are hard to predict.
All that being said, I wouldn’t speculatively convert ThankYou points into TrueBlue points. Much of the value from transferable points currencies comes from their flexibility. While it can sometimes make sense to take advantage of a transfer bonus, you’re losing a lot of flexibility when you transfer points.
Keep in mind that Citi ThankYou has several other airline transfer partners, including the following:
|Air France/KLM Flying Blue||N/A|
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
EVA Air Infinity MileageLands
Garuda Indonesia Frequent Flyer
Jet Airways JetPrivilege
Malaysia Airlines Enrich
Qantas Frequent Flyer
Qatar Airways Privilege Club
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus
Turkish Airways Miles & Smiles
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
If you do have a fairly short term use in mind for TrueBlue points, this is a solid deal. It’s also especially useful if you’re thinking of closing a Citi account, and need to transfer the points out. This is a pretty tough to beat “cash out” value if you’re looking to shut down accounts.
We’ve seen some transfer bonuses from Citi ThankYou to JetBlue TrueBlue in the past — for example, last September we saw a 25% transfer bonus, while last March we saw a 50% transfer bonus (though I doubt we’ll see a bonus that good again anytime soon).
Also keep in mind that the Citi Premier℠ Card has a limited time sign-up bonus of 50,000 ThankYou points after spending $4,000 within three months, which is an excellent sign-up bonus. At a minimum points can be redeemed for 1.25 cents each towards the cost of airfare, so that sign-up bonus is worth a minimum of $625 worth of travel.
Do you plan on taking advantage of Citi’s 30% transfer bonus to JetBlue?
