Video: British Airways Helps Navy Couple Get Engaged

British Airways has been doing an incredible job with their marketing lately, and in particular with their “BA Magic” campaign. Through this, they encourage people to write in sharing a trip they’d like to take for a special reason, and British Airways (sometimes) makes it happen in a very special way.

In the past I’ve shared the videos of British Airways helping a man propose to his girlfriend inflightthem helping an aunt get to Hong Kong for just 24 hours to surprise her nephewthem helping a man take his first flight after brain surgerythem reuniting a couple that’s 10,000 miles apartthem fulfilling a girl’s dream of becoming cabin crew, and them giving a 12 year old boy with cerebral palsy the Christmas of a lifetime.

They’re just such feel good stories that I can’t help but share them here, as they always put a smile on my face (and also sometimes tears).  British Airways has just released their latest video in the BA Magic series, which is about a navy couple getting engaged in the Caribbean. Here’s how British Airways describes the video:

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner British Airways helped a Royal Navy hero pull off the proposal of a lifetime. Lieutenant Lee Colthart popped the question to his girlfriend, Lydia Ayto, in the Caribbean .

The 29-year-old Navy officer wrote in to the airline to share his story and said he wanted to propose to his girlfriend of seven years in the Caribbean after he was deployed there last year to help with the relief effort following Hurricane Irma.

Lee, who is originally from Fife in Scotland, said he was desperate to take his girlfriend, who is a navigator in the Navy, back to paradise to ask her to be his wife. The airline stepped in to help surprise Lydia with a whirlwind tour of three beautiful islands, and a cocktail of once-in-a-lifetime experiences, ending with a very special question for Lydia to answer.

By my recollection this is the first time that British Airways has flown anyone in first class as part of this campaign (usually they fly them in business class at best), so that’s cool. This is an awesome story that put a big smile on my face, though perhaps not quite as much as a few of the other stories they’ve shared in this series.

  1. This is airline is becoming as bad as US carriers, Vueling and Ryanair. Cutting services anywhere. Oh wait, its CEO used to run Vueling!?

  2. Well all they needed to do was put them in that god forsaken disgusting, filthy business class where your nose is pressed against that of the seat person facing you. You have no choice but to become intimate with the stranger.

    Then the camera can awkwardly linger on them for the rest of the flight while everyone else shuffles away.

  4. @danallen ikr? plus, their cabin is so dry and drab, with zero colour whatsoever, and the quality of club world is akin to economy on emirates. what a waste of a carrier. its joined easyjet and ryan air on a race (or rather skydive) to the bottom. just to think 20 years ago you were treated like a customer…

  7. @Phil: Any decent guy/girl will ask before (or is 200% sure that it’s going to be yes). Otherwise you put +1 into an impossible situation.

    BA would do better if they improve the overall experience rather than advertising select cases where they excelled …

  8. I am somehwat taken aback by all the negativity here about this post. Of course there are criticisms of BA (as there are any airline). They may even be correct. But that is not why Lucky posted this. Honestly – we have enough negativity in the world.

    Anyone who is in the forces or has family in the forces can tell you how hard it can be at times. When both partners are serving, it just compounds the issue. The fact that BA helped to make this happen, regardless of what you may think of the airline personally, is fantastic.
