United.com being wildly inaccurate (more than normal)!

United.com is starting to tick me off more than normal. One of the nice things about the site is the ability to check availability by setting up your account in “expert” mode, which breaks down availability by fare class. For a long time now they’ve been a bit off on upgrade availability, sometimes showing upgrade space when there isn’t any. Other than that I’ve found it to be accurate.

Now it’s not even getting revenue fare buckets right. I’m on a flight tomorrow which is zeroed out across the board (actually oversold), yet united.com shows F4Y2. This has been happening on several routes.

That pretty much ruins the usefulness of united.com for me….

  4. But even if it’s oversold, don’t they come out ahead if they sell a seat in F or Y and ask for a someone to volunteer for $800/$400 voucher? Is that why they’re showing F and Y available, but other fare classes not so much?

  5. @ NYCguesser — To clarify, the website shows F4Y2, although they’re not bookable. They’re actually not willing to sell any seats.

  6. Don’t think so, both of the flights are way over. C’mon now, they’re just plain wrong! šŸ˜€

  7. Before each of my 25 flights in May I checked a seatcounter type site, .bomb award expert search and .bomb revenue and consistently saw my flights either zeroed out as well as totally sold out (and not bookable) for days leading up to and including the night before the departure date.

    Then comes they day of the flight and miraculously, seats become available.

    Not a single bump was to be ha, even on the holiday weekend.

    i now am almost convinced that all of my pre-flight inventory checking was futile and that IM zeroed out my flights, not because they were truly oversold, rather as an effort to divert sales to other flights that day.

    either that or i just have seriously angered the bump gods

    Hope all is well. I am trying to get a better idea of whether or not award availability from SFO to FRA on UA900 on August 7th will open up and I wanted to sign up as an “expert” on UAL.com as you mentioned above but haven’t been able to. Would you please let me know how you went about doing that?

    I’m doing great, thanks. Hope you had a nice weekend. Setting expert mode on united.com is easy. Here’s what you have to do:

    1. Go to united.com homepage
    2. From the upper right menu bar, select “My Profile”
    3. Log in.
    4. Click on the edit button for “My Travel Preferences”
    5. In the “Display Preferences” screen, change your setting for “Availibility format” to “an expert”
    6. Save your changes
    7. Congratulations. You can now see availability by booking code.

    As of now it looks like only two seats are reserved, leaving 10 open seats. Therefore the chance of award space opening up are GREAT. Why don’t you fill me in on what you’re trying to do, and I might be able to offer a suggestion.

    I’m not sure if there’s a specific reason you’re looking for United, but Lufthansa also has first class availability that day to Frankfurt from Chicago, Seattle, etc. šŸ™‚
