How to use AA miles to ZHR from DEN and not pay BA surcharge?

Hi- I am trying to book my daughter a flight from DEN to ZHR in May using AA miles. She has plenty of miles but the website only offers flights using BA and they come w/ a $300 gas surcharge (really? Gas here is $1.60 a gallon!). Other options? Thanks!

Amy–I’m assuming you mean ZRH (Zurich). BA is awful for surcharges. You’ll want to search for space on AirBerlin (no surcharges) or Iberia (lower surcharges than BA) or Finnair (no surcharges but very limited availability).
