Will The Bonus On The Ink Business Preferred Card Be Increased?

Reader Shelly asked the following question regarding the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, which Chase first introduced last November:

I want to apply for the Ink Business Preferred, but have heard rumors that the welcome bonus on the card will be increased soon. Do you know if this is true, and do you recommend applying now or waiting for a bigger bonus?

The card’s great welcome bonus, return on spend, and benefits

As it stands, the Ink Business Preferred Card is offering a welcome bonus of 80,000 Ultimate Rewards points after spending $5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. That’s a huge welcome bonus. I value those points at ~1.7 cents each, so to me the welcome bonus is worth $1,265, even after subtracting the $95 annual fee. By my valuation, that’s the biggest publicly available welcome bonus being offered on any card at the moment.

Not only does the card offer a great welcome bonus, but it also offers an excellent return on everyday spend. The card offers triple points in the following categories:

  • Travel
  • Shipping purchases
  • Internet, cable, and phone services
  • Advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines

You earn triple points on the first $150,000 spent in combined purchases in the above categories each account anniversary year (which means they’re not using a January 1 through December 31 calendar, but rather it’s based on when you signed up).

But it goes beyond that. The card also offers primary auto rental collision damage waiver coverage, as well as a unique benefit we haven’t seen on any other card. The card offers cell phone protection, where you can get up to $600 per claim in cell phone protection against covered theft or damage for you and your employees listed on your monthly cell phone bill when you pay it with your Ink Business Preferred Card. Maximum of 3 claims in a 12 month period with a $100 deductible per claim. That’s an incredible benefit.

Will the card’s bonus go up at some point?

For a while there has been a rumor that the Ink Business Preferred will get a 100,000 point welcome bonus starting March 12 in-branch, as the Sapphire Reserve Card had for a while. Well, it seems that’s not the case, as the bonus hasn’t changed. Doctor of Credit has now confirmed that if there is in fact a 100,000 point welcome bonus, it will be limited to business managed customers (with is very different than just having a business checking account, and excludes a vast majority of us).

So I certainly wouldn’t hold my breath in hoping that the welcome bonus on the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card will increase. The 80,000 point welcome bonus being offered right now is huge, so I doubt we’ll see it publicly go any higher soon, whether in-branch or online.

If eligible I’d certainly recommend applying under this offer.

Bottom line

The Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is a fantastically well rounded card. It excels in all three areas I consider when deciding to apply for a card — it offers a huge welcome bonus, a great return on everyday spend, and valuable perks and travel protection. I wouldn’t hold my breath for a higher welcome bonus. If anything, I wouldn’t necessarily expect that the current big bonus will stick around forever.

Assuming you’re eligible for business cards and not impacted by the “Chase 5/24 rule,” I’d apply sooner rather than later.

  1. What’s business managed? If someone’s a Chase private client and has a business account as well does that qualify? Here’s hoping to a 100,000 points offer.

  2. This might be a stupid question but I am pretty new to utilizing credit cards to maximize travel so please excuse me. I see that when I try to apply it asks about my business; well I don’t own a business. Are these business type cards with great sign up bonuses limited to only business owners?

  3. Super super super sketchy post! Links to Doctor of Credit but NOT the post where Doctor of Credit encourages people to try for 100K in branch. Sketchy, sketchy!!!

Ben, don’t compromise yourself for dollars. We are your friends, not your marks.

Just read Doctor of Credit, people.

  4. Can you combine these points with the points from a personal Chase saphire card? I’m looking to go Chase next and would love to combine them like I did with my citi cards.

  5. If I’ve had this card before, how long do I need to wait before reapplying for the bonus to hit? I couldn’t find it in the T&Cs.
