Silvercar Increases Referral Bonus And Adds New Location

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for purchases made through some of the below links. These are products and services we use ourselves, and are the best offers we know of. Check out our Advertising Policy for further details. Thanks for your support!

I’ve written extensively about Silvercar, including about the rental experience at LAX. Silvercar is an innovative rental car company available in a dozen markets, with only one type of car in their fleet, the Audi A4.

Each A4 is equipped with free GPS, wifi, and satellite radio, and Silvercar has a fair fuel plan, where they’ll fill up your tank for the “market price” plus a $5 refueling fee.

I feel like they charge a reasonable premium for what they offer, though admittedly everyone values things like this differently.

Silvercar has just announced two cool things — they’re soon expanding to Newark Airport, and are also increasing their referral bonus.

Silvercar expands to Newark Airport

As of now, Silvercar is available in the following markets:

  • Austin – AUS
  • Chicago – ORD
  • Dallas – Love
  • Dallas – DFW
  • Denver – DEN
  • Ft. Lauderdale – FLL
  • Las Vegas — LAS
  • Los Angeles – LAX
  • Miami – MIA
  • New York City – Manhattan
  • Phoenix – PHX
  • San Francisco – SFO

As of May 9, Silvercar will be expanding to Newark Airport. Their daily rates start at $79 per day pre-tax, so it’s about $100 per day including tax. Given how much some other agencies charge for weekday rentals, that doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.

Silvercar’s increased referral bonus

Silvercar has a great referral program, where they offer $25 in cash after your first rental if you’re referred by an existing member (the member referring you gets the same bonus).

The email Silvercar sent out says that they’ve increased the bonus for referring friends to Silvercar from $25 to $50:

To celebrate, we’re upping our Referral bonus! Now when a friend books using your Referral Code, they get $25 and you get $50! So spread the word to your Newark-bound friends, and we’ll see you in New Jersey!

What’s not clear is when the deal expires, and whether this just applies for rentals at Newark, or in general (I suspect it’s valid in general, though am not sure). Under this new referral program the person referring gets $50, while the person being referred gets $25. Personally I’d rather see it the other way around, but I guess they’re trying to give people a real incentive to tell their friends about Silvercar.

How to save big on Silvercar rentals

In addition to the excellent referral program, there are several other ways to save on Silvercar rentals at the moment:

  • New and existing members can use promotion code SPRING20 to save 20% on rentals through May 15, 2016
  • New members can use promotion code LOUNGEBUDDY to get a free day on a rental of two or more days
  • New members can use promotion code FACEBOOK50 to get $50 off a rental of two or more days

So to give an example, say you want to make a two day rental at Newark. You can sign-up for Silvercar so that you get $25 in cash after your first rental, and then use promotion code LOUNGEBUDDY to get a free day.

The normal rate would be $208 for two days, including tax:

But you’d end up paying $111, minus the $25 cash you’re getting back, which is a total of $86 for two days:

Bottom line

If you’re an existing Silvercar member, be sure to recommend Silvercar to your friends, so you can get $50 in referral credit. Furthermore, be sure to use promotion code SPRING20 to get 20% off your rentals in the next few weeks.

If you haven’t yet rented from Silvercar, you can save big on rentals of two days or more, between being referred and using promotion code LOUNGEBUDDY.

Silvercar facility at LAX

I’m a huge fan of Silvercar. While they’re typically priced a bit higher than other agencies, the experience is absolutely worth it, in my opinion. It turns renting a car from something I dread into something I actually enjoy.

(Tip of the hat to Mommy Points)

  1. As a data point: I just referred my wife to Silvercar for a rental we originally had in my name. Shortly after setting up her account and making a reservation, I received an email saying I’d get $25 when she completes the rental. Our rental is in PHX so it looks like the $50 referral credit might be limited to EWR (or they haven’t updated their system yet).

  2. Hey, do you know if Silvercar allows you to pick up the car in one location and return it back on another. I was going to go to the US on summer and wanted to do the Route 66, so would it be possible to pick the car up at ORD and then (around 2 weeks later) return it back at LAX?

  3. Frankly, I’m BLOWN AWAY that they say “Newark is known as a quick, hassle free airport!” What planet are they on???

  4. @James – Here’s what Silvercar says online:

Yes, upon pre-arrangement only, a one way pick-up and drop-off can occur between Silvercar cities. A one-way drop off fee will be applied to the total cost of the rental. Out of state limitations may apply.

Please contact our customer support line for one-way rental inquiries at (855) 359-2227 or by emailing

  5. An update on the referral bonus: Looks like it isn’t limited by location after all. As I mentioned in a previous comment, I was emailed and told I’d get the standard $25 referral bonus for referring my wife for a rental in PHX. Now that we’ve completed the rental, I was pleasantly surprised to get a $50 visa gift card.
