Marriott Certificates for Family Member

Does anyone know if there is a way to use a Marriott free night certificate to book a stay for a family member? I called Marriott and they said that it can’t be done; only a paid or points stay can be utilized by a family member. Appreciate any advice!

I’ve done this before and booked under my name, with the friend as a registered guest. Put in the reservation notes online that they will check in first
