The world is getting much smaller for Russian state-owned airline Aeroflot, and that was reflected in Sunday’s flight from Moscow to New York, as noted by Flightradar24.

Aeroflot operates eight hour flight to nowhere
On Sunday, the European Union and Canada officially banned Russian airlines from using their airspace. While the United States hasn’t yet banned Aeroflot, it looks like Aeroflot may be canceling flights to the United States due to lack of feasible routings to operate these flights, at least temporarily.
This was most evident on Aeroflot 124 from Moscow (SVO) to New York (JFK) on Sunday, February 27, 2022. The flight was supposed to depart at 2:40PM and arrive at 5:20PM, and was operated by a Boeing 777-300ER with the registration code VP-BHA.
The flight took off roughly on schedule, and continued a standard northerly routing for around four hours, over Finland and Sweden, and then toward Greenland.
However, I suppose the news that both the EU and Canada are banning Aeroflot caused Aeroflot’s operations people to cut their losses while they could, and have the flight return to base. Without being able to use Canadian airspace, odds are that the plane didn’t have enough fuel to land in New York, and where can the plane even really refuel at that point?
So in the end Aeroflot operated a roughly eight hour flight to nowhere. For context, below is what a standard routing would have looked like for this Aeroflot service.
Aeroflot uses Canadian airspace by lying?
On Sunday morning, Aeroflot 110 from Moscow (SVO) to Miami (MIA) operated as scheduled, departing at 7:10AM and arriving at 11:50AM. That’s because the flight (which used an Airbus A350-900) operated before both Canada and the European Union officially banned Russian planes.
The return flight was supposed to be a different story, though. Aeroflot 111 from Miami to Moscow was scheduled to depart at 1:55PM and arrive at 8:35AM on Monday morning. However, by the time the flight departed Miami, new restrictions had already been put in place by both Canada and the European Union.
Nonetheless, if you look at the flight path, you may notice that the flight still used Canadian airspace without restrictions.
So what happened? Did Canada allow this as a one-time exception, which would be reasonable, since the plane was returning to base? Nope, it’s stated that Aeroflot claimed that this was a “humanitarian” flight, which was obviously a lie, and this is now being investigated:
We are aware that Aeroflot flight 111 violated the prohibition put in place earlier today on Russian flights using Canadian airspace. We are launching a review of the conduct of Aeroflot and the independent air navigation service provider, NAVCAN, leading up to this violation. We will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action and other measures to prevent future violations.
This seemed to be the only flight where this happened. Aeroflot 157 from Punta Cana (PUJ) to Moscow (SVO) was a bit behind, and that plane had to route around Canada.
Bottom line
The world is slowly closing to Russian airlines, with Aeroflot being the most global of those airlines. With new airspace restrictions from the European Union and Canada, Aeroflot decided to turn around on its service between Moscow and New York on Sunday.
Meanwhile Aeroflot’s eastbound transatlantic flights on Sunday also had quite a journey — the flight from Miami still used Canadian airspace, apparently by lying and claiming it was a humanitarian flight. That’s now being investigated.

So what was a Russian passanger plane doing flying so far from its original flight plan at a time that Canada had become a "no fly zone" for Russian aircraft? Perhaps it's much safer to take photographs of a base from a passenger plane than from a military aircraft during tense times. I can only imagine the Russian pilots would never fly "directly" over a major North American military airbase in unauthorized airspace during such intense times unless they were made to or they were insane!

That flight was full of American citizens including many kids who were trying desperately to leave Russia (including two of my family members). What Canada did was horrible and put many American lives at risk. Canada literally sent Americans back to Putin’s Russia.

Well, Being realistic, I suppose they did have to get home and not having enough jet fuel to take any diversionary route, they had no other choice than to overfly Canadian Airspace. The lying, however was a very silly and inexcusable action taken by the pilots of the Aeroflot aircraft headed to it's home port of Moscow. Of all things to lie about, humanitarian flight was a very odd choice when the truth would have surficed in those circumstances.

There are several opinions that any Aeroflot flight my should be shot down. Under normal circumstances I would agree. However, in this case, there are many innocent citizens aboard as well as the complimentary Russian spy or 2. Just close the air space to any and ALL Russian flights. In case you are wondering why these flights cross Canada instead of flying directly across the Atlantic ocean, it is because the routes are "Great Circle" routes that are actually shorter than what one would think from looking at a map. If one would look at the earth from a point in space in which one could draw a straight line directly from the flight's starting point to the destination along a plane surface that would intersect the center of the Earth, you would discover the path (a Great Circle) is actually shorter than any route plotted as a straight line on a flat map.
Naturally, the routes take into consideration the possibility of having to make an emergency landing during the flight - which causes the flight path to slightly deviate from the optimum Great Circle path.

Actually, it is pretty pointless to ban Russia from US airspace mostly because every Aeroflot flight must pass over airspace that they are already banned from. You can't get here from anywhere in Russia without crossing through Canadian or Danish/Greenland airspace.

Approx 50% of Russian commercial airplanes are leased. Seizures are already taking place as leasing companies realize its likely the airlines will not be able to make the payments. Landing those planes, even in countries without landing restrictions will likely result in siezure.

Also the countries you propose create a ‘wall’ of airspace over them, all belong to EU (which maybe you don’t know, because you don’t seem to keep up with the news), and hence have banned Russian flights from their airspace. So you can check that box off. And by the way, all 4 proposed countries offer inter- and trans-continental slight services.
So instead of offering unsolicited careless advice, as a better alternative to the meticulously researched and carefully thought-out plans led out by EU and US leadership (which, by the way, have taken into account to the extent possible the energy flow from Russia to EU members), you may want to spend those extra few minutes on educating yourself on how the EU works, reading the news (and not just one random story or two) & thinking more about the consequences of all options, and not just one.

Vladimir Putin does not fly on Aeroflot, does he? And I'm sure that Rossiya 001 or whatever callsign they use will be allowed anywhere, if they chose to travel.
My personal experience - they hurt the people, however, they also create a united front in the country against the countries imposing them, rather than against the governement. If anything, sanctions I was mentioning only prolonged the suffering of many.
Also, EU wasn't playing this one too smart. A lot of European airlines use the Russian airspace for their Far East flights. What they should have done is made a "wall" of countries that do not have intercontinental services from their countries. Such as Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Greece, etc. So it would be unfeasible for SU to fly around them, while at the same time, Finnair, and other airlines that depend on using that airspace could continue to do so. Adding Finland to the list does not hurt Russia one bit, but it will sting Finnair badly.

If Greenland is off-limits (as it should be, since it is part of Denmark), the only route to North America would be over North Africa, Turkey and then turning north over the Caspian sea. Unless there is a corridor in international air space between Greenland and Iceland.
