Another useless "countermeasure" by the West that does nothing to address what's actually going on. Cutting SWIFT or airspace access would be as useful as drop in the bucket in deterring Putin. Well done EU & Canada. Well done.
What, exactly, would you do that is guaranteed to deter Putin? The West is taking various measures that, while of minimal effect individually, will hopefully combine to have some sting. I agree with you that blocking Aeroflot flights is mostly symbolic, but who knows, maybe it will deny some wanted cargoes from being delivered to Russia. As Ukraine is not a NATO member, direct U.S.-NATO military conflict with Russia is off the table (for better or worse). There are signs that some of the munitions recently supplied to Ukraine have taken their toll on Russian vehicles and at least slowed the invading forces.
So what do you suggest? Start WW3 and kill 98% of humanity when the nukes fall?

Not true. Preventing upper class Russians from traveling to the rest of the world shows their are consequences of having Putin as the leader of Russia. Most Russians don't want this war and when it starts effecting their quality of like it puts pressure on Russian Gov't
Yet most aircraft not built in Russia (Boeing-airbus) but owned buy Russians or Russian companies are registered in the Bahamas or the Cayman Islands. Take that loophole away and suddenly Aeroflot will be a lot smaller.
It’s just a matter of time unless Russia closes its Siberian air corridor for the west. It is the most valuable airspace which connects the west and south east Asia. It is not worth banning flights from airspace.
I couldn’t care less for Aeroflot, I’m genuinely worried about Finnair, how can they now economically operate flights to Asia without flying though Russian airspace?

I had an unfortunate opportunity to live in a country that was hit by UN sanctions - much broader and much harder than current restrictions placed on Russia. The idea behind these and any sanctions is to hit the ordidary people, and in due course, expect that same people to topple the regime as a consequence. As in 5-10-15 years.
So, make no mistake, while these sanctions are caused by the Russian government behaviour, they are not designed to hurt the members of the same government. They are designed to hurt the people. Vladimir Putin does not fly on Aeroflot, does he? And I'm sure that Rossiya 001 or whatever callsign they use will be allowed anywhere, if they chose to travel.
My personal experience - they hurt the people, however, they also create a united front in the country against the countries imposing them, rather than against the governement. If anything, sanctions I was mentioning only prolonged the suffering of many.
Also, EU wasn't playing this one too smart. A lot of European airlines use the Russian airspace for their Far East flights. What they should have done is made a "wall" of countries that do not have intercontinental services from their countries. Such as Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Greece, etc. So it would be unfeasible for SU to fly around them, while at the same time, Finnair, and other airlines that depend on using that airspace could continue to do so. Adding Finland to the list does not hurt Russia one bit, but it will sting Finnair badly.
The broader threat to Aeroflot is from the corporations that lease these aircraft to the airline. If the aircraft are not used in accordance with the lease agreements, they will have the right to terminate the leases and reposses the leases aircraft. In a broader context, if there is no incoming revenue, Aeroflot will be in default due to no payment as spelled in the lease agreement. This will have the affect of further isolating the Putin Regime from the world community for their aggressive actions in Ukraine.
Theses closures pertain to Russian-registered aircraft, Russian-owned aircraft, and Russian-operated aircraft, private or commercial. Registering the planes in the Bahamas as SU did does not avoid sanctions.
So @Marco can you please update the latest situation in the said country?

Of course the sanctions are meant to hurt the Russian people, who can immediately turn against their government, as all these are an immediate result of their head of state’s actions. I’m not sure if you are keeping up with the news, or selectively looking at certain articles, but sanctions have been used on Putin, his close allies and relatives too. The whole point is to make the whole country suffer, and it seems like it’s working as intended.
The other option would be to let Putin act undeterred and kill millions of innocent Ukrainians (for fear regular Russians might experience inconvenience), or getting EU and the USA involved in the military conflict, leading to WWIII. Maybe the sanctions sound like a better option now, doesn’t it?
Also the countries you propose create a ‘wall’ of airspace over them, all belong to EU (which maybe you don’t know, because you don’t seem to keep up with the news), and hence have banned Russian flights from their airspace. So you can check that box off. And by the way, all 4 proposed countries offer inter- and trans-continental slight services.
So instead of offering unsolicited careless advice, as a better alternative to the meticulously researched and carefully thought-out plans led out by EU and US leadership (which, by the way, have taken into account to the extent possible the energy flow from Russia to EU members), you may want to spend those extra few minutes on educating yourself on how the EU works, reading the news (and not just one random story or two) & thinking more about the consequences of all options, and not just one.
Such a shame that the Russian people—and Aeroflot, which I recall from one of Ben’s reviews is a perfectly lovely airline—must all suffer because of Putin’s megalomania.
You're forgetting China. You might have overestimate the impact of these sanctions. Until China sanctions Russia too, it's not anything close enough for the people to topple Putin. And how do you think this will make Putin suffer, we can't even locate all of his hidden assets. For all we don't know, he could be wealthier than Elon Musk.

I think it is quite fair to let Aeroflot to repatriate their citizens from US, even if they miss the airspace closure deadline. These people would otherwise be stranded there with their credit cards not working, etc.

I think that all space in the US should be banned for Aeroflot as well. If Greenland is off-limits (as it should be, since it is part of Denmark), the only route to North America would be over North Africa, Turkey and then turning north over the Caspian sea. Unless there is a corridor in international air space between Greenland and Iceland.

I dunno - I, for one, would not want to fly through Russian airspace right now. Too much opportunity for an “unfortunate accident.”
Gander or any operational airport would have let them land for an emergency refueling or to let (non russian) off.

It's been over for a long time now, we are talking decades. However, my feeling is that it would have been done much earlier if there were no sanctions or better yet if they were targeted in an entirely different way. I might be wrong. But cutting communication of ordinary people with their families, colleagues and friends abroad definitely didn't help - at the very least, give the people a chance to see with their own eyes things are and should be done differently. This way, if they only know "one truth", they will be less likely to be critical of an authoritarian ruler, a tyrant, or whatever else you might put in that category.
What is a fact, though, is that those privileged few who had access to black markets - and they are, you guessed it, the ones very close to the regime - have gotten awfully rich in the process.
We may have to do more drastic things. However the stakes of war are different than 1918 or 1941. Let's try the careful approach first.

Approx 50% of Russian commercial airplanes are leased. Seizures are already taking place as leasing companies realize its likely the airlines will not be able to make the payments. Landing those planes, even in countries without landing restrictions will likely result in siezure.
What about rich Russians with luxury condos in Sunnyside FL? They should be evicted and the condos forfeited and sold with proceeds used to help Ukrainian refugees

In case you are wondering why these flights cross Canada instead of flying directly across the Atlantic ocean, it is because the routes are "Great Circle" routes that are actually shorter than what one would think from looking at a map. This is because the Earth is actually a sphere (as opposed to being "flat" like a map).
If one would look at the earth from a point in space in which one could draw a straight line directly from the flight's starting point to the destination along a plane surface that would intersect the center of the Earth, you would discover the path (a Great Circle) is actually shorter than any route plotted as a straight line on a flat map.
Naturally, the routes take into consideration the possibility of having to make an emergency landing during the flight - which causes the flight path to slightly deviate from the optimum Great Circle path.

Actually, it is pretty pointless to ban Russia from US airspace mostly because every Aeroflot flight must pass over airspace that they are already banned from. You can't get here from anywhere in Russia without crossing through Canadian or Danish/Greenland airspace.

Saddam had the 4th largest military in the world and the US crushed them in three weeks with hardly a dent. Not a single M1 Abraham tank was destroyed in the 2003 invasion. Russia’s military still has many outdated equipments from the Soviet era.
The EU sanctions are acts of defiance - nothing more. They harm the EU airlines more than the Russians. The best example is FINNAIR, which is on the verge of bankruptcy because it is no longer allowed to fly to China and Japan via Russia. And how should Western Europeans, e.g. Germans, travel home from Russia according to government instructions? About Asia and Dubai. Who pays for these tickets? The EU or Berlin? Corona dictator Trudeau's Canada is like a dog that can bark but not sing.
Banning Aeroflot does little to Putin, and more to ordinary Russians, who are the other victims, with even a worse condition/future than the Ukrainians, because, as told by an academic Russian friend, "the Ukrainians are under fear, but have the world's support, and have hope. Well, Being realistic, I suppose they did have to get home and not having enough jet fuel to take any diversionary route, they had no other choice than to overfly Canadian Airspace. The lying, however was a very silly and inexcusable action taken by the pilots of the Aeroflot aircraft headed to it's home port of Moscow. Of all things to lie about, humanitarian flight was a very odd choice when the truth would have surficed in those circumstances.

First point, we have better oil and gas technology than Russia and they have to hire western companies to extract some of their oil and gas. Many of our existing wells are retired because production cost was higher than market value and can be brought back online quickly... for a price.
Long ago when I worked in Government Policy Coordination at a major oil company, it was federal policy to encourage depletion of foreign oil reserves, leaving US reserves in the ground as "last man standing" if no alternate energy source (solar, nuclear, hydrogen, etc.) came fully online before world depletion of oil and gas. Called "strategic" reserves. You know, back before the Renazikkklans lost their minds and committed treason. Our resources are still here.
Note also that Hillary Clinton never sold our uranium reserves to Russia: two Russian oligarchs applied to buy stock in a Canadian company that had a contract to extract American uranium for the US government. The flight from Miami to Moscow had redirected its flight path to conveniently fly directly over CFB 5 Wing airbase (the place I was born). This is a military airbase that was built during WW2 as a major refueling base and later became training grounds for NATO allies to practice low level flying in order to evade radars. During the Gulf War "Saddam Hussein" had reportedly considered CFB 5 Wing base as a strategic target because of it's importance to North America and NATO allies.
So what was a Russian passanger plane doing flying so far from its original flight plan at a time that Canada had become a "no fly zone" for Russian aircraft? Perhaps it's much safer to take photographs of a base from a passenger plane than from a military aircraft during tense times. I can only imagine the Russian pilots would never fly "directly" over a major North American military airbase in unauthorized airspace during such intense times unless they were made to or they were insane!
