100% bonus on purchased US Airways miles is back!

US Airways is once again offering a 100% bonus on purchased miles (in increments of 10,000 miles) through September 15. Through this promotion you can purchase 100,000 miles for under $1,500 (including the excise tax on miles). That’s enough miles for a business class award ticket to Europe or North Asia, which is an amazing value.

Accounts have to be at least 12 days old to be eligible, and as usual, you can only earn a maximum of 100,000 miles through this promotion (50,000 purchased miles plus the 50,000 bonus miles).

(Tip of the hat to Gary)

  1. Well, US released one in early 2010 and it wasn’t so awful…

You might also note that UA’s new award chart isn’t exactly stupid in comparison to US’s the same way, oh, LH’s is. So a redo might not be so awful.

That being said, I plan on NEVER stocking miles beyond an award or two that I have in mind (just burned 90K on SEA-HKG-SEA in C with short day transits of BKK and FRA). Earn/buy and burn, baby. Mileage is a depreciating currency, so use it while you can.

  2. I don’t understand how US makes money on these deals since they have to pay the partner airlines for redemptions on their flights. And I imagine most premium redemptions are on other carriers. I hope it’s not a case of selling the family china to pay this month’s mortgage.

  3. Are you sure it’s enough miles to Europe in business class. I just went on their Dividend Miles webpage and looked up PHX to LHR in October and it’s 100,000 miles each way for business class. What am I missing?

  4. @ eponymous_coward — True, though they weren’t “printing” miles as much back then as they are now. I have to think that eventually we’ll just see *massive* increases. But who knows.

@ Purewater — You’re looking at awards on US Airways metal for “standard” award priced flights. Saver awards on Star Alliance partners are 100,000 miles roundtrip.

  5. Does anyone know if you and your spouse can each buy 100K, and gift 100K to each other, for a total of 200K?

  6. Hi Ben. I’ve got an award reservation on hold until the midnight of the 10th from DTW to FRA Business Class and FRA to BLR First Class and coming back BLR to FRA First Class and FRA to DTW Business Class. So really only half the itinerary is First Class and the other half is Business Class due to lack of availability. Since they will charge me 160K Miles anyway do you think this is worth it or should I do Business Class the entire way and save 40k miles? I only have 110k so I need to buy 10k or 50k miles so that’s why I ask. This is for my father and due to time he most likely won’t even be using a free stopover (he might do BKK maybe) Want to make sure I’m making a smart decision.
