American Airlines has just announced that it will be completely changing the concept for its Flagship First Dining facilities, as the airline eliminates international first class. These will simply become Flagship Dining facilities, and that’s totally awesome, as business class passengers will also have access. Well done, American!

Modified American Flagship Dining concept unveiled
For years, American has had Flagship First Dining, which are facilities inside select Flagship Lounges. The idea is that this offers an a la carte dining experience for those traveling in international or premium transcontinental first class.
American is currently in the process of eliminating “premium” first class — Boeing 777-300ERs are being reconfigured without first class, while Airbus A321XLRs (without first class) are replacing A321Ts. So there has been a big question as to what American would do with these facilities going forward. Would they just close, or what? Well, it’s much better than that.
As of September 15, 2026, Flagship First Dining will simply become Flagship Dining, and the idea is that this will be open to all Flagship Business passengers traveling on qualifying long haul international, transcontinental, and Hawaii flights.
In other words, if you have access to a Flagship Lounge on account of your American business class ticket, you’re also eligible for Flagship Dining, on a space available basis. However, if you have Flagship Lounge access on account of elite status, or through traveling on a partner airline, you wouldn’t have access to this facility.
American notes how guests interested in dining should check in with the host team inside the Flagship Lounge upon arrival. If a table is immediately available, guests will be seated at that time. If all tables are occupied, guests may be added to an electronic waitlist and will be notified when their table is ready.
Currently you’ll find these facilities inside the Flagship Lounges in Dallas (DFW) and Miami (MIA). The location in Los Angeles (LAX) has been closed for years, but will reopen in late 2026.
I would expect that demand will greatly exceed supply, especially during peak hours. However, the same is true for the a la carte dining in United Polaris Lounges and (to a lesser extent) at some Delta One Lounges. This is really a great way for American to become more competitive with Delta and United. I’m really, really impressed, and this seems like a sincere effort to improve the premium experience.
American Flagship Dining will offer four-course menus
Launching alongside the expanded dining facility access will be an all-new four-course Flagship Dining menu. The airline promotes that “the seasonal offerings blend regional flavors, thoughtfully sourced ingredients and refined culinary techniques to create an elevated dining experience inspired by some of the world’s most celebrated restaurants.”
American is sharing some of the dishes that will be on offer, including a Texas pear and burrata salad…

…the Flagship Burger…
…a California artisan board…
…and churro bread pudding.
In addition to that, American is introducing a wine and chocolate pairing, featuring KHK Wines and K+M Extravirgin Chocolate. Chef Thomas Keller, who co-founded K+M Extravirgin Chocolate with Italian olive oil producer Armando Manni and is a founding ambassador in KHK Wines, curated the pairing.
Bottom line
There has long been the question of what the future will hold for American Flagship First Dining, given that the airline is eliminating “premium” first class. The answer is the most customer friendly version imaginable. As of September 15, 2026, Flagship First Dining will become Flagship Dining, and will open up to business class passengers who get Flagship Lounge access.
This means American will offer proper a la carte dining in its business class lounges, increasingly matching the competition. What an awesome change from American!

I’m flying AA J through LAX in January and I was planning to visit the QF First lounge (will be OWE by then). Now I’ll have to decide whether to check out Flagship Dining instead. Hopefully some reviews will help me decide before then.
If they restrict dining only to AA J customers and not other OW J and elite members, maybe that’ll help keep overcrowding to a minimum?

I wish I could post photos in the comments, but the best food I've ever had in a lounge was easily in the DFW Flagship First dining room. The cornbread and burgers were absolutely delicious along with the wine list they had at the time.
Good. I've been whining for years now how LAX Flagship First Dining has been closed. Reopening it and allowing Business Class to enjoy seems like a better move than keeping it closed indefinitely.
Notably, though, business class passengers will still not have access to a la carte dining at JFK, though Delta passengers do at the Delta One lounge and United passengers at EWR do at the Polaris lounge
@ JPS -- Yeah, it's funny, because they got rid of Flagship First Dining when they opened the Chelsea Lounge and Soho Lounge, and turned it into a new setup with a brewery and more. I'm curious if we now see the lounge go back closer to the old setup, since there's certainly space for it, and the furniture is still there.
That's great news! AA is really playing the game to become premium. This last year or so, actual and announced improvements has hopefully started to move the needle for AA.
