While we’re writing more about travel lately, we’re not necessarily suggesting people do travel (though if you do, please be considerate and smart). But we also recognize that many folks need a break, whether that’s because they have been homeschooling for months, or living in a small apartment, or otherwise need a reset.
We’ve been receiving numerous questions and requests for help with domestic travel in the US, which makes sense — many people want to stay close, and international travel will likely be fairly complicated for awhile. Many people have asked about road trips and National Parks specifically, so our colleague Jimmy helped me put together a list of hotels that might fit the bill.
We originally started with Hilton, both because they have a broad domestic footprint in the U.S., and because all the card perks make it so easy to rack up Hilton points right now, but due to popular demand we’re doing this for a few more chains and loyalty programs.
So next up is Marriott Bonvoy. While Hilton has more hotels in rural locations or near to National Parks, the sheer number of brands under the Bonvoy umbrella means there are lots of possibilities (and hundreds of properties in the US alone).
In general, Marriott seems to be better for beach and resort locations, and the inclusion of the Tribute and Design Hotels brands mean there are some more boutique properties as well, with a smaller size that might appeal to some.
We’ve included the price ranges in Marriott Bonvoy points, and have included properties where you may be able to use the free night certs that come with the various Bonvoy credit cards.
For many of these hotels, however, you’ll really want to look at the paid rates. Properties in ski destinations, for example, are often great jumping-off points for summer and fall hiking, and rates are just a fraction of what they’d be in-season.
And of course, before making any plans, and again before embarking on your trip, you’ll want to check the local and state health guidelines, and be familiar with any tourism restrictions.
It’s also worth noting that if you live in a region of the country that is taking pandemic precautions seriously, you may want to stay in that region — and vice versa. Absent a coordinated federal response, the approaches vary wildly by state and sometimes county, which absolutely makes travel more complicated.

Wow, nothing but Boston, NYC and Niagara in the entire Northeast? I kind of thought it was a Marriott wasteland over here, but now you've confirmed it.
For CA wine country, include Hotel Trio in Healdsburg. Technically this is a Residence Inn, but RI branding is nowhere to be seen. Summer rate is 40K points per night or around $316 all-in with an affinity discount, includes full breakfast which is grab-and-go but you can reheat stuff in your room’s kitchenette that includes a stove. There’s a gourmet supermarket across the street.
This is a useful list, but for now it reads like a list of Covid Hotspots

+1 on Inn at Bay Harbor.
For Niagara Falls, I would add Reikart House. It's technically in Buffalo, but it's out by the airport (so not that far of a drive from Niagara) and it's much better than the options actually in Niagara.
The Del Monte outside of Rochester, NY, is an option for New York wine country.
The Equinox in Vermont.
And the Wentworth in Portsmouth definitely needs to be on this list!
I'd also suggest adding the Inn at Bay Harbor in Michigan to this list. Just visited last weekend for a little getaway, and was generally impressed by the property and outdoor activities. Great use of 35k certs given the $450+ room rates this time of year!
I don't see any mention of a lot of places to go on the north east coast. Would you consider making one for that region?
Would love to see something geared toward the New England area in the future!
Couple of quibbles to note:
1. Lynchburg is not really that close to Shenandoah National Park. Marriott properties in Waynesboro, Staunton, Harrisonburg, & of course Charlottesville are all closer.
2. No mention of any beach properties in Ocean City, MD? There are several there last I checked.

You forgot the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay! I had a couple nights staycation there last weekend (using 2 50k certs I had) before the 4th and it was very pleasant. The beaches were closed for the holiday weekend, but there are paths that run above the beach which make for a scenic walk.
