Delta to offer BusinessElite seats between NY & LA/SF

Starting in September, Delta will start operating 757-200’s configured with 16 BusinessElite seats between New York and Los Angeles/San Francisco. It is about time, given that American, United, and Virgin America offer international business class seats up front on all their premium flights on this route, and Continental operates 757-200’s with international business class seats on some of these flights.

Of course while it sounds nice and dandy, I would expect this to nearly kill complimentary upgrades for all except top tier passengers on expensive tickets. Not only will Delta get a bit more paid premium traffic as a result of this, but the number of premium seats on many of these flights is being reduced from 26 (on the ex-Song 757’s) to 16. So this is both good and bad news, depending on who you are.

  1. Good news (I guess) — I’m scheduled to fly JFK–LAX in October. I’ll be flying with the whole family and I’m the only one with status, so an upgrade would give me a chance to be seated away from the kids 🙂 (though I’d probably let my wife take the seat up front).

Now my wife is booked on the 11 PM LAX–JFK, and will probably need that changed. What are the chances of a schedule change that would allow her to rebook without a penalty? Unfortunately, my guess is close to nil.

  2. As a Gold Medallion I was upgraded with only 2 seats avail in first class. And this was a full flight in the middle of the day. Seats were great!
