Only one leg upgraded on AA

Only one leg upgraded on AA

I recently returned from a trip to Hawaii, which I flew on American IND->DFW->KOA. I don’t have status on AA, but it was worth the miles and fee to try to upgrade to get to fly in the 777’s premium cabin on the long flight, so I called and was put on a waiting list for upgrades. I ended up being upgraded for IND -> DFW but not DFW->KOA; 15k miles for an upgrade in a flight that is barely two hours is not a trade I would have made. What could I have done to avoid this? Should I have only asked for an upgrade on the long leg even though the shorter leg would be “free”?

I did get upgraded for the return redeye, and that was some of the the best $$+miles I have ever spent.
