One of the best uses of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue miles is booking their Promo Awards.

FlyingBlue publishes these every month, and they offer 20-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal.

Back in the day Promo Awards would consistently be for 50% off and would have a good number of options in business class, though unfortunately they’ve devalued the promotion somewhat since then, and the discounts are now pretty consistently for 25% off. That’s still good, just not as good.

FlyingBlue just published their latest Promo Awards, valid for bookings made between September 1 and September 30, 2017, and for travel between November 1 and November 30, 2017. With the current Promo Awards, you can get 25% off the following awards:

  • New York to Europe in Air France economy class via Paris Orly
  • Calgary to Europe in KLM business class
  • Edmonton to Europe in KLM business class
  • Montreal to Europe in KLM economy class
  • Vancouver to Europe in KLM economy class and business class
  • Vancouver to Europe in Air France economy and business class (valid through December 31, 2017)

With these discounts you’ll be paying 18,750 miles one-way in economy class (rather than 25,000 miles), and 46,875 miles one-way in business class (rather than 62,500 mils).

It’s not surprising to see so many Canadian cities on sale in winter, though I’m disappointed to see the lack of cities in the US. In this case we’re seeing 25% off economy and business class awards on both Air France and KLM out of Vancouver, which we almost never see.

Availability is excellent over eligible dates. For example, here’s availability from Vancouver to Paris in business class in November:

The Vancouver to Paris route is even typically operated by an Air France 777 featuring their reverse herringbone business class seats. That’s a good deal for a great product.

The New York flight will be useful to many as well, though unfortunately it’s only valid for Air France’s New York to Paris Orly flight, which isn’t ideal if you’re making a connection, given that most of Air France’s flights operate out of Charles de Gaulle. However, fuel surcharges in economy are mild, so this could still represent a solid deal for travel between the US and Europe.

With any of these awards, you can include connections to other points in Europe (including Israel) from Paris at no additional cost, though you can’t include domestic segments on Delta or Alaska to position within North America.

All saver level space on Air France and KLM in the above markets is eligible for the discounted costs, and these awards are bookable directly on the FlyingBlue website.

As always, there are plenty of routes outside of North America eligible for Promo Awards as well, so be sure to take a look at the whole list.

Bottom line

Promo Awards are always worth checking out. The list for September has lots of options to/from Canada, though the US Promo Awards are limited to economy to/from Paris Orly. The great thing to keep in mind about Promo Awards is that they can be used for travel anywhere within Europe, which includes Israel, by their definition.

Is anyone considering one of the Promo Awards on the September list?

  1. If flying on an AF award into Orly, would you be able to take a connecting flight out of CDG on the same award, or only Orly?

  2. @ Evan

You can connecting out of CDG even if you fly into Orly.

A lot of people know it and do it.

This is why ben shows the example of TLV.

To go to CDG from ORY, you can take “Le bus direct” which is formely the Air France coach service.

For some elite passengers and the business ones, the coach is free of charge.
That was like this in the past with the AF coaches.
I believe this can still exist with “Le bus direct”.
To get this I advise you to go to the connecting desk at ORY on the departure level.
If you are eligible for the free service, the AF ground staff will give you a ticket to use the “Le bus direct” to get to CDG.

Of course you need to mick yourself your checked lugage at ORY.

  3. I “get” why or how they run this promo. I really, really like it however….I wish it was good for bookings further out. November isn’t a bad time limit but I wish it was another month out at least. #lookingagifthorseinthemouth

  4. KLM’s 787 business class would make up a nice review, especially to see your opinions on the hard product just to see how much better it is to the 777 and 747 product. How about the AMS-YVR leg? You have not reviewed the lounge either since 2014 so that would be really cool too

  5. I get that they run these promotions every month. How are the availability? With the Vancouver to Europe in Air France economy and business class (valid through December 31, 2017)…I’m assuming around Christmas, there’d be no space?

Never had prior experience with SkyTeam.
