One of the best uses of Air France/KLM FlyingBlue miles is booking their Promo Awards.

FlyingBlue publishes these every month, and they offer 20-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal.

Back in the day Promo Awards would consistently be for 50% off and would have a good number of options in business class, though unfortunately they’ve devalued the promotion somewhat since then, and the discounts are now pretty consistently for 25% off. That’s still good, just not as good.

FlyingBlue just published their latest Promo Awards, valid for bookings made between February 1 and February 28, 2017, and for travel between April 1 and May 31, 2017.

FlyingBlue’s new February list of Promo awards includes the following 25% off awards between North America and Europe, many of which come with date restrictions within that period:

  • Montreal to Europe in KLM business class
  • San Francisco to Europe in KLM business class
  • Toronto to Europe in Air France or KLM business class
  • Boston to Europe in Air France economy (May 1-31 only)
  • Cancun to Europe in Air France business class or economy (May 1-31 only)
  • Detroit to Europe in Air France economy (May 1-31 only)

With these discounts you’ll be paying:

  • 18,750 miles one-way in economy class, rather than the usual price of 25,000 miles
  • 46,875 miles one-way in business class, rather than the usual price of 62,500 miles

With any of these awards, you can include connections to other points in Europe (including Israel) from Paris and Amsterdam at no additional cost, though you can’t include domestic segments on Delta or Alaska to position within North America.

All saver level space on Air France and KLM in the above markets is eligible for the discounted costs, and these awards are bookable directly on the FlyingBlue website. Availability on these routes is excellent, and you should see that all saver award space reflects that pricing.

As you can see, there are four Promo Awards for business class tickets, which I typically think represent the best value. Perhaps the best deal of all is for flights between San Francisco and Amsterdam. Availability is excellent, and usually scoring nonstop business class awards between the West Coast and Europe is difficult, making this an especially good opportunity.

As always, there are plenty of routes outside of North America eligible for Promo Awards as well, so be sure to take a look at the whole list.

Depending on your travel plans these can represent excellent values.

Bottom line

Promo Awards are always worth checking out. The list for February looks pretty average, though I do think the San Francisco to Amsterdam discount is especially good, given how tough of an award that can often be to snag.

Availability is generally good in both economy and business class on Promo Award routes (which is why they’re available for Promo Awards to begin with) so if you live in one of the eligible markets, I’d seriously consider taking advantage of this promotion.

Is anyone considering one of the Promo Awards on the February list?

  1. @You can hold your award ticket prior to transferring points by calling the FlyingBlue call center.

Promo Awards must be booked online. You cannot book them by phone and put a reservation on hold. Callcenter agents might ticket promo awards (and they need authorisation from a supervisor for that) only in case of troubles with payment on the website, when you book your award and let’s say a payment doesn’t go through.

  2. Does Flying Blue allow 24h+ in between transits? I am based on Toronto and have been looking for some time to visit Austria, so a 24h+ transit on Amsterdam and Paris would be great.

  3. Nathan, 24+ hours would be considered a stopover. FlyingBlue allows 1 stopover for a round-trip award ticket (you need to book by phone). No stopovers could be booked within Promo Awards. You can only pick long connection (up to 24 hours) in Paris or Amsterdam if it’s offered by their website.

  4. So…. I couldn’t find SFO AMS promos in biz class. Are they gone or is it like…one or two dates for the months you have to get lucky on?

  5. Did they pull SFO? Looking at the promo awards page, and I only see Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Cancun and Detroit.
