Historically one of the best uses of Air France-KLM Flying Blue miles is booking their Promo Awards. Flying Blue publishes these every month, and they offer 20-50% off select award tickets on Air France and KLM metal.

In June some major changes were made to the Air France-KLM Flying Blue program. It became a revenue based frequent flyer program, meaning that you’re awarded miles based on how much your ticket costs, rather than based on the distance you fly.

Furthermore, Flying Blue introduced variable award pricing. Previously Flying Blue redemption rates were zone based, while now the pricing works differently. In other words, a New York to Paris redemption now costs a different number of points than a New York to Paris to Frankfurt redemption, even though they previously priced the same.

However, Flying Blue continues to offer Promo Awards, they just work a bit differently. Flying Blue has just published their Promo Awards for bookings through October 30, 2018, and for travel between November 30, 2018, and January 30, 2019.

If you’re looking for a discounted transatlantic business class award, this is the best list we’ve seen in quite a while. The following awards are available at a discount:

  • 25% off Air France & KLM business class awards between Washington Dulles and Europe
  • 25% off Air France & KLM business class awards between Toronto and Europe
  • 25% off Air France & KLM economy and business class awards between Montreal and Europe
  • 25% off KLM business class awards between Calgary and Europe
  • 25% off KLM business class awards between Edmonton and Europe
  • 50% off Air France & KLM business class awards between Vancouver and Europe
  • 50% off Air France business class awards between Seattle and Europe

Seriously, this is a phenomenal list, as I don’t remember the last time we’ve seen this many discounted business class city pairs. Redemption rates vary due to Flying Blue’s new dynamic pricing, so if you’re interested I’d recommend playing around with all kinds of city pairs.

For example, you can book Amsterdam to Vancouver for just 30,250 Flying Blue miles, which is an exceptional deal.

For whatever reason, Prague awards almost always seem to work out cheapest, and if you fly from Prague to Amsterdam to Vancouver on the same date, the cost of that award goes down to just 26,500 miles.

Alternatively you could fly from Calgary to Amsterdam for 45,375 miles one-way (and potentially even less if connecting).

There are so many excellent deals here, so I can’t recommend enough taking advantage of this if you’re looking to cross the Atlantic this winter.

  1. I found some Vancouver to Geneva fares for 26,500 points plus $259

Anyone up for a nice ski vacation in January?

JFK to YVR (Alaska, Delta, Cathay or Air Canada) – Whistler for 5 days
YVR to GVA (KLM or Air France) – Verbier for 7 days
GVA to YUL (KLM or Air France) – Mount Tremblanc for 3 days, Montreal for 2 days
    YUL to LGA

  2. @ ZFV Flyer — Depends on the exact city pair, but generally somewhere around $200-250 one-way for business class.

  3. Are AF-KL Promo Awards only between Europe and North America? Or are there Europe to/from South America, Central America, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Oceania available. Also intra-Europe city pair available?

  4. Really wish I could 🙁

I booked an economy award a while back from Dublin to Calgary on KLM but sadly there’s no promo business class award space for me to upgrade to on the day I’m traveling… Bummer.
Oh well at least I’m still flying just not in the front of the 787 😐

  5. I tried pricing out several SEA -> Europe pairs, and found several fares at 13250 miles if booking one ticket, but as soon as I priced out three tickets the prices jumped to 61000 per ticket (exact same ticket). So that kinda sucked.

  6. Thank you so much for the heads up. I was able to book AMS-SEA with a stop at CDG for 14,500+304.50 USD. I checked twice to make sure if the quote was indeed for Business Class and sure enough it was. I couldn’t let this deal pass.

  7. Lucky thanks for the heads up. How long does it take for Amex and Chase points to transfer to KLM/Air France?

  8. Flew KLM business class ,never again, not even for free.As for Air France,I never feel safe on their flight, not sure why.Apparently Im not alone to offer these bargains.

  9. For all that found the 13K promo awards for business class, could you give any date that you guys found them. That’s a deal I simply cannot refuse and would love to take! Thanks!

  10. Is there any way to see the award calendar without having points in your Flying Blue account? I don’t want to transfer points on spec.
