Marriott Hotels Can No Longer Play Elite Breakfast Games As Of July 1

345

We’ll have to see what this looks like in practice, though this is definitely a step in the right direction.

Hotels have played elite breakfast games during the pandemic

Understandably during the start of the pandemic, many hotels closed down their restaurants and club lounges. This was partly due to lack of demand, and partly due to local restrictions on indoor dining. At least in the United States things are slowly returning to normal, with indoor dining now allowed in most places, and hotel demand in many markets back to pre-pandemic levels.

Understandably Marriott gave hotels the option of offering food & beverage alternatives to guests in light of this, for situations where restaurants are closed, or where capacity is limited. Unfortunately many hotels have been taking advantage of this flexibility, but not in the spirit that it was intended.

Many hotels have been playing games with breakfast for those with elite status, presumably motivated by an attempt to cut costs. This has been particularly prevalent for Marriott Bonvoy Platinum members and above. Just to give some examples:

  • We’ve seen some hotels keep their club lounges closed, but not offer elite members a breakfast alternative, instead offering them points
  • We’ve seen some hotels reopen their restaurants, but claim that they’re not “fully” reopen, and therefore elite members wouldn’t receive breakfast
  • We’ve seen some hotels offer breakfast credits that aren’t even big enough to cover a single breakfast option on the menu

On a corporate level, Marriott hasn’t done much to get hotels to act within the spirit of the exceptions. Marriott did reinstate elite guarantees at the beginning of the year, but that didn’t explicitly require hotels to fully restore their breakfast benefits. That will finally be changing.

Hotels have had flexibility with breakfast during the pandemic

Marriott Bonvoy elite members should expect breakfast as of July 1

As noted by View from the Wing, for Marriott properties in the United States, “the flexibility granted hotels for opening of food and beverage outlets based on occupancy will end July 1.” In other words, hotels are being instructed to stop playing games with elite breakfast as of July 1.

In theory that should be great news. Unfortunately what this looks like in practice may be a completely different story:

  • Many Marriott properties have taken liberties with denying elite perks, and there seem to be limited repercussions from corporate for that
  • Even before the pandemic there was a ton of inconsistency when it came to the delivery of Marriott’s breakfast benefit
  • Marriott’s breakfast benefit is technically for continental breakfast, and some hotels have interpreted that to mean a coffee and a muffin, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see more hotels adopt that interpretation
  • We know the hotel industry is hoping to be higher margin post-pandemic, and I imagine that could at least partly come at the expense of elite perks
Expect Bonvoy elite breakfast benefits to be restored

Bottom line

Marriott hotels in the United States are being instructed to no longer play games with elite breakfast as of July 1, 2021. This comes as the flexibility that hotels had during the pandemic will be ending.

We’ve seen countless stories of hotels playing games with elite breakfast. So while this is great news, we’ll have to see how hotels actually handle this change. It’s one thing to change the rules, it’s another thing to have hotels comply.

If you’ve stayed at a Marriott in recent months, what was your experience like with breakfast?

Sheraton Macau does this fairly well, although been a near 4k room massive hotel, they always offer complimentary dinner(massive buffet together with paid guests) if their lounge is closed, along with a free lobby bar access where you can take drinks throughout the day. They even award free Breakfast(at lobby), giving you 1,000 welcome points at the same time. If they failed to upgrade you(platinum) into one of their suites, they will offer another 1,500...

If they failed to upgrade you(platinum) into one of their suites, they will offer another 1,500 points as goodwill. I guess they don't really care about the revenue of hotel guests because a majority of their revenue comes from the casino within the complex. While just across the sea, Sheraton Hong Kong decide to interpret free lounge access for platinum benefits, does not have to be at the executive lounge, and created one of the smallest lounges ever on a separate floor with the most basic amenity to separate up the "paid" lounge guests and the "Elite benefit" lounge guests.

I have stayed at two Marrott properties in three months. Each stay was for 5 days to 7 days. Both properties were very clean, all of the bulbs in the rooms were bright and worked. The rooms were spacious. Both exceptional showerheads.

However, the breakfast offered were quite different from one property to the next.

Hotel #1s breakfast was an absolute crap. You received a brown paper sack with crackers, chips, nuts and a bottle of water of questionable quality. For a diabetic, which I am, there was nothing in there I could consume without my sugars skyrocketing. There was nothing of nutritional value at all. It was cheap garbage.

Hotel #2 was a little better. Mostly, it still processed, pre-package food. Served were package sausage biscuits, your choice of blueberry muffin or banana-nut muffin. There was cereal, milk, apple juice, orange juice, bananas, apples and oranges. I could eat most of it without risking going into a diabetic coma. It was better, but it wasn't a continental breakfast. I felt a little cheated because this was not clearly spelled out in amnesties section.

So, buyer beware; ask what is included in the advertised breakfast. Not everyone is forthcoming in their offer of pre-packed, processed food.
As the saying goes: Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. There won't be a third time.

Marriott has become a distant second tier hotel brand. I have a lot invested in Marriott but question my continued loyalty.

    1. Joanne Itri Lasalle Guest

I am starting to believe that I should look elsewhere for my loyalty.
I have an MGM mastercard and even at the gold level, the rooms are offered with deep discounts, free valet parking and no resort fees.
I just read the craziness and tricks going on and we never know what to expect. Time to look at other chains and programs.
Even at all the free breakfast level hotels you are hard pressed to find edible food. Hot itema are often nuked.

Well, essentially the calorie counts have significantly increased, most items are packaged with questionable looking product. Nothing kids want. Took away the waffle maker that was the daily hit, no fresh bagels or breadstuffs. Cereals are all sugar based cereals, took away the Kashi. The poor breakfast attendants have to listen to all the complaints. I seriously question the leadership at Marriott.

Cuz making food and knocking on the door is horrible, but having a subpar buffet with dry cereal is okay? Because having someone grab your bags is gasp! But cashiers touching your groceries and items is apparently good? Seriously Marriott, do better, a lot better

I stay once a month at a very nice Motel 6 in Tennessee. It is operated by a wonderful married couple. They have a diner attached to the motel. Great food! The rooms are clean, simple and no amenities. Costs less than 70 bucks a night. They even have 2 parking spots reserved for electric vehicles (with chargers).

I just called river front Portland Oregon as I have a stay coming up. Breakfast is still only grab and go. So a muffin and juice and fruit, even though the state is open they are not offering full breakfast. We stayed with Marriott for almost seven month and earned our status and to constantly be told covid. Pool isn't open. Across the street at the holiday Inn it is. Come on Marriott you can do better

I’m staying at the Courtyard Marriott in Pigeon Forge. No breakfast for Elite members. I supposedly got a welcome bonus of 500 pts. No option of getting breakfast with points either

I can confirm that the new normal is a disappointing one. The restaurant at this property in VT was traditionally a great perk, but the local option has been downgraded to a boxed continental breakfast.

I went back to the front desk and told them I'll take the points. I would rather go out for breakfast. The hotel with parking, resort fee and taxes is well over $500 a night. I would expect a lot better! BTW I stayed in Park City last week at a Sheraton, the breakfast was not bad and complementary, I also stayed at the Spring Hill Suites just outside the Zion national park. Breakfast was complementary, but only two star. Nearly forgot, stayed one night at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, no breakfast! I am a Titanium Elite for life.

I'm a plat currently at the Philadelphia Marriott Old City, and the breakfast on a Saturday (July 3) was a voucher card given out at the front desk which you can exchange for a piece of fruit, granola bar, yogurt, and fruit juice at the coffee bar in the lobby. Not exactly in keeping with the guarantee we've been sold.

Don't stay at Townplace Suites Marriott - 198 Precision Rd. Horsham PA. - as of this writing - Wednesday June 23 , 2021 - STILL NO HOT breakfast of any kind! We are still recieving the "grab n go" breakfast bags which consist of a tiny yogurt , a stale muffin in a package (usual apple cinnamon ) , a tiny box of cereal (not much selection & often no milk for it anyway ) , and either an orange juice or Apple juice (we've occasionally had none of that either & been given water) and an orange. Until approx 3 maybe 4 weeks ago at most - there was no coffee in the lobby! We've been complaining about the breakfast so - we've been getting a Jimmy Dean type breakfast biscuit which on the 21st (2 days ago) there wasn't any of those either . This is INEXCUSABLE now.
Here's the real kicker - the pool isn't even open!!! We are about to go into the 3rd heat wave this weekend already of extremely high temps & humidity. We've asked about it , here's what we were told by both "management" & other guests who have been here last year (this is a long term stay hotel ) - The pool hasn't been open for TWO YEARS!!!! Something is broken (I can't recollect what). SO FIX IT!! The pool area is dirty & not maintained , landscaping & needs help , a couple of weeks ago 3 rooms had air conditioning broken , there are never quarters for laundry it's ridiculous.
Now I'm a Bonvoy Ambassador Elite member and this is definitely NOT acceptable. I also have been here 6 months now. I was going to change hotels at one point & find another but I stayed. One reason being the pool , it would be very good for therapy for recovery from some long illnesses. I had NO IDEA that it had been unmaintained & closed for 2 years with NO apparent intentions to clean , fix or open it until the other day. I have spent a great deal of money & will definitely not stay here in the future. I definitely feel I am owed some type of compensation for my expectation of these amenities!!!!
Incidentally there was also an incident where many Marriott guests had somehow been charged MULTIPLE times in 1 week which charged guests THOUSANDS of DOLLARS in 1 week causing people the inconvenience , some overdrafts , cancelled & replaced bankcards etc etc etc. I got my money back & to my knowledge so has everyone else but that was a mess & caused many of us several problems/issues. This incident involved multiple hotels & not just this particular location.

I have been a loyal Marriott Lifetime Platinum member since the 80's.
I must say however since the advent of BONVOY I have seen many changes and not for the good. Last month I stayed in a Springhill in Ft Myers and was astonished at no breakfast, not even coffee.
They certainly are not what they were when I traveled weekly and would go out of my way to stay at a Marriott Property.

Being a diabetic, this is not the breakfast I can have. But the biggest complaint is the lack and inconsistencies with room service. We could not get towels. I was informed we could not have our sheets changed or get any type of services unless we stayed over 5 days at one site. At another Marriott the requirements stated if we requested the service before 8am on a specific type of request sheet that we had to get from the hotel lobby between certain hours from the head of the maid service. I took to sneaking around to find the maids and slipping them money to get clean towels. We are in travel soccer clubs and the kids were muddy. The Marriott in Florida had laundry units in the hotel, the ones in Alabama did not. Yes, I am a Bonvoy member as I also travel for work. So the services has definitely slid downwards since the Pandemic. In Alabamba, we also were promised $10 per night creditwhen we booked with Bonvoy and the hotel manager stated she did not approve the credits from Bonvoy at checkout.

Free coffee and limited breakfast buffet was fine. Several Marriott properties in the Pittsburgh area. Staff was kind and gracious I was at an AC Hotel , Springhill Suites and Courtyard on business. They comped me a free cocktail as well.

Stayed at a Springhill Suites on our way North. The elite breakfast was a small container of imitation orange juice and a granola bar. Not even an apple. The next night at a 4points there was no recognition of elite status whatsoever. One of the worst hotels we've seen in years. Old and dirty. Wrote critical reviews about both and got no response.

Marriott breakfast is terrible now in most locations. You get a voucher for not edible starbucks breakfast sandwiches. The quality is usually awful and the voucher does not cover a full breakfast. I am Titanium but I mostly stopped using Marriott. Elite doesn’t mean anything at Marriott anymore.

First of all, the clerk was rude w/no smile, happy greeting, "Welcome to the Marriott...", the most somber face to look at. My room was not ready. Had to wait 40 mins. Instead of being more apologetic & offered us a drink or snack whole we waited, which by the way I had my 85yr old mother w/me she was, too, busy coming up w/ all kinds of excuses. It isn't my concern the hotel was sold out the night before. She charged me $30.00 more than what my email confirmation stated. She charged me for a drink that I did not remove from the snack area. She did not run over the charges of my bill when I was checking in. I discovered the $180.00 charge that should have been $150.00 on my online back account. I asked when the manager would be in so to speak with & she said "tomorrow". Checkout time the next day, I was asked how my stay was & I said I had some issues but my elderly mother was already getting anxious so I would have to call later that day. The clerk offered me the mgr's business card. I call at 2:55pm & guess what? The Mgr is not in on the weekends. Only works Mon-Fri I was livid. Spoke to the same clerk who gave me the business card & told her why did she not provide me w/that information. From the clerk on Sat to the clerk on Sun, what business etiquette are they following? Shocked as a big female dog. I had never experience this type of business protocol in the last 40 yrs of traveling. She apologized for "insinuating" that the Mgr was in. Are you fricking kidding me? She asked me if I wanted to leave a voice-mail in which I did. You can betcha sweet where the sun don't shine I'll be calling early Monday morning. This is going to be insteresting.

The changes Marriott has made to their rewards program remind me of how I felt when I was premier executive at United. I put all my eggs in one basket only to have their service and treatment of customers go into the toilet. I only fly United when I have no other choice. For decades I have put all my eggs into the Marriott Bonvoy program only to get to the same place. I have hundreds of thousands of points accumulated and they are essentially worthless.

At first, it was understandable to limit the breakfasts and to realize bars and bistros would be closed. But Marriott took it too far when I stayed at a Marriott property in Cartersville, GA for a state cheerleading competition a couple of months ago. Georgia has been open as a state at least a year in restaurant services. But this particular property still had a closed bar and bistro. It was full to capacity due to the competition. One person working the front desk. They couldn’t even find a wine opener. The hotel was one of the lowest constructed ones that I have ever been in. Tiny rooms......I ordered a king with a pull out sofa. It was a twin pullout not even listed on the website. Noisy rooms.....like no insulation at all. Road noise. Feet noise in the hallway all night and I wan the top floor. I wrote up a survey and the manager never even responded. I am reconsidering staying at Marriotts in future until they come up to par with other hotels. My opinion is that the “pandemic” became an excuse for hotels to lower their standards. Very sad.

I was just at a corporate owned courtyard wherein staff couldn't understand their own $10 daily food credit program and charged me for the breakfast. I also have Hyatt, Hilton. Hilton is looking pretty good.... Hyatt just doesn't have enough properties for me.

How come if services at Marriots are so dismal because lack of staff during this pandemic, are we as customers still paying the same rates pre pandemic? I don't mind having less amenities etc. But it kinda sucks the rates are not lowered. Customers are definitely being taken advantage of.

We stayed at a Marriott in Atlanta in the beginning of June 2021. It said it would serve continental breakfast which consisted of some small pre packaged gas station muffins and pastries, orange juice and coffee from plastic cubs and small packs of cereal.

My only complaint (considering the restrictions) is that--over my 7-day stay, there was no variation in the offerings. It would have been nice to have some rotation with other muffin and breakfast bar flavors, bananas and oranges, etc.

(Since there were also no dining-in restaurant options at the time, I supplemented the bag with yogurt and other items from a nearby grocery.)

At a very recent Marriott stay I was offered a choice between breakfast from the restaurant menu or points the first morning of my stay but had to go to the front desk and ask for a voucher the second morning. We were able to order off the resturant menus so it was great!

During our travels, we have stayed a week at a time at two different Marriott Bonvoy extended stay hotels. Each meal experience was minimized to the point where we just stopped picking it up. What we didn't understand was how they could still charge full price for amenities that were not included. All the services we expect to access were closed, so shouldn't that reflect a discount? We count on the food during travel, especially mid-pandemic.
We have since switched to VRBO options to ensure a kitchen.

Marriott International is the largest hospitality company Worldwide for a reason. The Elite Member benefits are carried out according to each brand. I think the issue is many Elite Members interpret themselves to all be of Ambassador Elite status & think they are privy to those benefits; they are not. Sad that most 4 star hotels here would barely pass as 2-3 stars in Asian countries and Europe. I stay at 80-120$ a night hotels now as marriott and Hilton mean nothing than paying an extra 200$ markup because it had the name marriott or hilton attached. Beds are the same service is usually the same and I'm less disappointed when it only costs 100 versus 400. I suggest talking with the duty manger when there is a discrepancy at the time of the problem. Increasingly I think trying to work such issues out directly with hotel staff that have FULL control to rectify the situation would achieve a better result than complaining to corporate. Marriott corporate is increasingly unhelpful, but I received much better benefits or compensation when dealing internally in the hotel.

We were once given the President's Suite at the Prince de Galles in Paris. Albeit by mistake. They even apologized for not giving us the whole apt,but the actual President of France was using it for a presser. Trianon Palace next to the gardens always gave us a Suite and breakfast in their Michelin Starred restaurant. You just need to make friends with the staff. The difference is that hotel workers in Europe consider their work a profession way more often than in the US. you can come back 10yrs later and be recognized by the same staff. Sadly this fabulous hotel that used to be owned by the Moonies is now a Hilton. Just canceled our September reservation because of bad treatment by a belligerent Sup after being on hold for a full 2hrs. I just wanted to change my reservation. As far as being denied an upgrade I just call the front desk's bluff and call Platinum Concierge to see if all Suites are sold out or I go to the website and show them what is available. That used to work well with SPG but not so well with Bonvoy. I truly feel badly for mom and pop owners but the owner on this blog who owns several hotels I don't consider a m and p owner. I say if you are short staffed go in and cook breakfast for your guests. That's what I did when I owned restaurants. You do what you have to do to keep your customers happy and coming back. Pretty harsh advice hunh? Well hospitality is a pretty harsh business right now. As I mentioned in a previous post the Princeton Westin we just stayed at had a full hot buffet. Not so good but at least they tried. I was told that during the week they do grab and go and if they are well booked on the weekend they do the full monty. We can all appreciate what the industry is going through right now. But don't try to tell me that they can't provide a decent breakfast. I am sure people have noticed the huge amount of increase in room rates. If they have been able to survive this long theywill make it back soon enough. And if they treat ELITES right we will help them prosper.

right on -- I have the highest status and awarded no value fir breakfast almost nothing at their highest end products. Shame shame on Marriott corp., I feel taken by being loyal to the brand with almost 1500 nights since 1987.

It is their corp. administration for the fault. The merger a couple of years ago has made the higher end products a mess with breakfast. Their attitude is indifference towards loyalty. I doubt if management reads these reviews.

No changing linen, must take care of your room and get towels when you put yours out. However. no pricing differences for doing less for you and it is just plain unkind and greedy.

Would have been good to upgrade those who cannot get any other credits, and allow one to use these points without telling you, you cannot due to hotels not being able to accommodate. They cannot give you much but do not want you using points earned.

Found mattresses in poor condition and require someone to look for when these require changing. My last stay the mattress was lopsided and my back paid for it the next day..

Bonvoy needs to improve their way of treating their Elite and Higher clients who gave them their loyalty for a specific reason, not to get less than.

Breakfast offerings was the final straw on the first night of our honeymoon at Marriott North Conway, in New Hampshire! After driving 2 hours from Maine, it was unpleasant surprise after unpleasant surprise! My husband bragged for years about his elite and premium status with the hotel chain and was therefore left with egg on his face after our check in. Firstly, we were followed to the parking lot outside by the rooms manager, who then advised us that the fireplace room that my husband had booked for our wedding night was oversold so we were placed in a Family suite with two Queen beds! Wow..nice for a newlywed couple. Exactly what we'd want, to sleep in separate beds on our wedding night. My husband's attempt at explaining the specific reason for booking a room with a fireplace was met with this response.
"We have a firepit on the outdoor patio". The room smelt like it hadn't been serviced in awhile. One small bar of soap. Insufficient towels and....it over looked what seemed to be a dog pound next door over a torn down fence at the rear of the property. Very romantic!!
My husband's letter and email to the hotel's manager was never even acknowledged much less responded to. To say that he was disappointed with the treatment is an understatement. As for me, a former guest services manager of a high end, multi billion dollar resort in the Caribbean, I muzzled my true response so as to not add any additional shame and burden to.my husband's feelings of having failed to make our first night as man and wife memorable.

There was one restaurant open with limited capacity. There was always a Q as the hotel was very busy. But the kicker was after failing to get a table I had a drink in the lobby. They would not serve in the lobby so I stood at the bar with several others to order a drink. The bartender eventually said last orders and then ‘that’s it I am finished’ so no drink and no apology. Appalling.

I have been offered sack breakfasts for quite some time now and this practice needs to end, now that more if not all hotels are offering some form of a hot breakfast. Also, never having a room to be upgraded to is beyond out of hand. Don't bother offering me that option then when I can never get an upgrade. They have alot to learn and Hilton isn't any better. I may need to check out Hyatt????

The occupancy level and average rate in our market are only at about half of what they would normally be, with still no real sign that significant market segments are set to return. To expect all hotels and their ownership groups to perform at exactly the same level of monetary loss just so you can pretend you deserve something more in this world than you actually do shows the level of delusion that so many of you people possess. Those of us that operate hotels have no problem - and will be more than glad to provide - excellent customer service and play our part in creating unique and special experiences for travelers with our traditional full array of tools at our disposal....when that time comes. Understand we are ALL still limited not by greedy profit margin ownership groups but by the fact that the TRAVELERS HAVE NOT ALL RETURNED. Stop crying like petulant children because you got some gracious resort somewhere that comped you ridiculous amounts of money because of the slightest little inconvenience you faced and not every single establishment in every corner of the country is able to do the same thing. All we tell our guests is to bear with us during this time and try to provide them with whatever we are able to at the fullest of capabilities, and do so with a smile on our faces while we silently cringe that we never have a guest like any of you that are passing judgements that impact our very lives and ability to feed our own families.

At this point in my life I am now only on property as a line level associate with a very good relationship with on property management and I'm keeping a finger on the pulse of things via LinkedIn, the wise pineapple, colleagues, and Facebook hospitality groups.

The biggest issue guest are going to encounter is lack of staff and it's not for the lack of pay. A full service sister property of mine in my same market held a job fair a month ago. Only 40 RSVPs and out of those 4 showed up. 3 got hired....only for the front desk since those were the only applications. I was told just yesterday that one has already quit. There are GMs particularly on the select service end that are working 7 days a week 12-16 hours a day because they can not get anyone to stay. This is where service amenities are going to suffer as a handful of people can only be in so many places at the same time.

I know restaurants who's ownerships have flat out said they are not reopening until 2022. While occupancy is on the rise, it's still only in select markets and it's not cost effective for these markets who haven't rebounded to pay people to stand around for 5 covers max a night.

I can't speak to the corporate level as it's well beyond my purview, but I can say as an industry we miss our guests, our hearts bleed for the industry, and we want nothing more than to serve. That said it might not be the smoothest transition back to norm. Some properties might do things maliciously or cautiously but rest assure that the majority of us want to do the right thing.

I'd love to see something like this for Hilton. Their Diamond member benefit for breakfast has seen all of the same problems listed in this article. It's incredibly frustrating. I'm glad to hear Marriott is doing something about it, though.

Well they may have stopped the full breakfast option and to date haven't restarted as instructed. However they have offered muffins, breakfast bars, oatmeal, yogurt, juice and coffee in the morning with some locations even offered a microwavable breakfast burrito. But hopefully that change that as of July 1st but we'll see.

No membership required, no elite status required. I have stayed at Marriott for seminars. No breakfast although I am a registered elite member. Sketchy cleanliness, iffy internet. Lucky to have refrigerator in room, no microwave. But I did pay more money for the Marriott privilege.

We stayed at a Residence Inn this fall and were really dismayed to discover they weren't offering any kind of breakfast at all. And there was no forewarning so we had to make a late night trip to the grocery store inn order to feed our kids the next morning. Nothing was offered in return. At a different Residence Inn during the summer, they offered brown bag breakfasts that had things like pastries and yogurt.

Including one property where the bellman was telling me that they were at 98% occupany during my stay. I'm sensitive to the effects of the catch-all cop out of saying the word "pandemic" as the excuse for devaluation of benefits. But not so much when the room rates I'm paying are at or above pre-pandemic levels. That includes paying for my stays with similarly devalued points. As a customer and fan of Marriott for more than three decades my genuinine concern....for the first time in the history of my business relationship....is that what I'm starting to see is the new normal. We are global travelers and very seasoned travelers. The service we have had here as Platinum members has been short of a nightmare. With several of the phone receptionists being down right rude and unprofessional, not to mention poor customer service and communication skills. They have been confrontational, lack of willingness to accommodate and stated to me that "our request was not even worth bothering her manager. " My request was for a roll our bed for 2 nights. Our granddaughters were joining us age 5 and 9. The front desk assistant said no, but I'll send you a pack and play, that should accommodate you for a few days. I was shocked. When I voiced my disagreement, I was told to feel free to move to another hotel.
The house cleaning staff are careless, when changing our bed, my necklace was somehow blown off of the nightstand. When I reported it missing and hat I was going to call the authorities, I asked to see the staff and the vaccume bag. After a short time, the housekeeping manager appeared and the soon another lady appeared with my necklace. Then another lady came with the vaccume bag. Now I don't let anyone in the room. We just exchange towels and trash.
I don't recommend you come here. The guests are loud and inconsiderate on the weekends. When you call downstairs they tell you that they cannot control the guests. As far as the breakfasts, we grew tired of the one day voucher one day not accepted, we have resorted to eating out. I will be glad when our home is ready and we can move out of this hotel.
We are seriously going to switch to Hilton or the Hyatt after 30 years of being a Marriott member. Such a disappointment. Shame on you Marriott Boncoy and your staff!!!

And the skimping on bathroom essentials is outrageous. They are starting to resemble a motel yet higher than many elite hotels. I find it funny how their bars and shops remained wide open , but the perks all were shut down or scarce due to the pandemic! Haha nice try Marriott! One of my largest issues with Marriott as an ambassador status member are hotels not honoring room upgrades!! The hotel always has a bigger more expensive room available for me if I'm willing to pay for it, but if not they never upgrade me as is represented by Marriott as one of my status perks. Starting to consider giving my business to a different hotel chain.

You guys forget to mention that most of Marriott hotels are franchised. It cost to run a hotel. The people who provide the service are getting $11 and $12 an hour to take your crap. As an elite, you deserve to receive your benefits such as access to the lounge if you are platinum, titanium or ambassador. You also have guaranteed room type and protected from being relocated if the hotel is sold out. You get arrival points or voucher. However many people abuse this service by sending their employees to check in under their status to receive the benefits or they make a big deal if the hotel try to charge for the extra 10 people joining the elite member for breakfast or the lounge. The benefit is for the elite member not for the entire people in the member's orbit. And for those who give low ratings please rethink it again because you're putting the entire hotel in danger to lose their franchise flag which means you lose the benefit you keep bragging about. For your information only 9/10 or 10/10 count as positive survey and anything less is negative, so the next time you rate a business please put your ego aside and rate the actual service by providing constructive feedback because hotels will read it and correct any issues related to their service but please don't rate 1 because you didn't like the view or other silly things like that.

I have stayed at numerous Marriott in the past year. I can only describe their “breakfast bags” as an insult to value and food in general. Bottle of water and a granola bar, sometimes a very small packaged muffin. This was true at ALL of them. We started staying at B&B’s and Hilton’s, even though I have a surpass card. I got two rooms for my parents and my kids and us and used points. The service couldn’t have been better. I was actually blown away because my expectations have been lowered so much over time. They asked how many of us were staying when I checked in and gave each of us (7) certificates for a full sit down breakfast. It was delicious too. I valued that at about $120.

That same weekend we headed down to the Atlanta Marriott Marquis where I paid cash for 3 rooms for the same group. Indifferent service at first which turned to rude by the end of the stay. (They first tried to deny a late checkout request….without explanation or apology). We got a coffee and muffin voucher (2 per room) for each night of the stay at the lobby Starbucks. Not nearly as valuable and it didn’t matter that we had my three kids staying in one room together—they got 2 muffins.

The whole thing is just very inconsistent, such that it is hard to value elite status anymore. Is it worth pursuing and having…?

This happened in Malaysia as well, the newly refurbished JW Marriott in Kuala Lumpur was open for booking in the website and the marriott bonvoy app for the past 6 months but due to my dismay, they relocate all the guests to the super old Ritz Carlton which doesn't have dine in breakfast nor club lounge since its Ritzzzz Carlton. The JW Marriott KL walked most of the guests without giving ultimate guarantee reservation as promised in the Marriott Bonvoy program despite being open for booking. I was one of the unfortunate guests and was told that I am lucky to get a new room in the nearby hotel. They are still open for booking as for now till year end but no open for guests to stay. I have contacted the Marriott Bonvoy to resolve this but seems like the HQ can't overpower the JW Marriott KL, which is a surprise to me because JW Marriott took advantage of the pandemic to cut cost. Westin KL also did the same for the club lounge benefit by cutting down all the choices including drinks to miserable one glass per guests. They even had the audacity to charge coffee and tea on my visit in the lounge as a titanium elite member. I was told once, when there is a pandemic, hospitality and management especially top notch hotels should work even harder to retain their elite members by providing even more but looks like I am wrong this time. I am disappointed.

I rented this Marriott and it was $130 per night. I was there for 4 days. I feel that this location is one that does not cater to their platinum elite members and to be honest with you, I felt it was overpriced. I will not stay here again not because it wasn't clean when I checked in but for the following reasons: 1. They did not plan on cleaning or servicing the room for my 4 day stay. 2. There was no one on site for most of the stay, you always had to look for someone. 3. They did not offer any breakfast items and the coffee was cold everytime I tried it. 4. I had to ask for shampoo or room items. 5. I also had to request room service. 6. This hotel caters to long term oil field workers and even though plenty full, treats a platinum guest as a long term guest. I could have stayed at 1/2 the rate and received better service. 7. The rooms dis not have usb chargers anywhere to be found, a standard pretty. I had to sit in the lobby while my phone charged enough to go somewhere.

I’m sorry that you did not find us to be a good value and that our service was lacking. Guest satisfaction is our highest priority and I regret that we left you with a poor impression. We will continue to adjust our amenities as we move through the pandemic and your feedback is welcomed as it encourages change for future stays. Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed review with us. We hope to better serve you in the brighter days ahead.
    Sincerely,

The real reason this article did not comment on is the fact that those who work in the restaurant in their hotel are the lowest paid employees (except for chefs). This trend is throughout the hospitality and fast food restaurant industry. STOP PAYING SLAVE WAGES..WHICH ARE ZERO..ELIMINATE ALL THE BRUTES IN MANAGEMENT then hotel guest can enjoy a breakfast buffet

I'm just tired of Marriott. I shouldn't have to wonder if a hotel is being compliant with Marriott policies. Part of being a chain is that there is a minimal set of standards that exist across that chain. I don't fault the individual hotels-they are like kids that test the parent to see how much they can get away with. In this case, the parent isn't active in the parenting role. Nearly every hotel we stayed at during the pandemic had pathetic breakfast offerings. It was very apparent that the “no breakfast” or “breakfast in a bag” had nothing to do with safety and EVERYTHING to do with convenience- for them!

My breakfast sandwich was suppose to have avocado as listed and they didnt have any, the brioche bun was stale. They didnt reduce the price when I asked about it.
I also stayed at a Marriot hotel in Austin. The concierge was still closed at the end of May this year. They provided a limited hot breakfast only until 9:30a. They did tell me that I was free to grab any snacks & drinks from the market.... that was nice. Such inconsistency within the same brand.... and not close to the quality now that they are reopening.... particularly at my stays in Texas.

As others have said there isn't a breakfast benefit at Courtyard. You get a $10 per person credit for something from the bistro or the pantry. So $20 if you tell the front desk there are two people in your room. At most properties the Courtyard $10 credit isn't enough for one person to have a breakfast.

    2. FNT-Delta-Diamond Gold

Much of the inconsistency is because of Marriott's model. It doesn't manage most of its hotels. Most hotels aren't just owned by franchisees but they're managed by the franchisee or a third-party management company. While McDonald's uses the same franchise model, McDonald's seems to have much higher standards for its franchisees than Marriott. Probably because Marriott has too many brands. Imagine McDonald's and then 25 other McDonald's branded restaurants, each with different standards or guidelines.

$10 credit was just enough for a breakfast sandwich ($6.50) and coffee ($2.15).

So I've been told you're only a silver reward hold out loud and I couldn't get the complimentary breakfast. Again degraded in front of others. Marriott fix this please.

Because at some properties that would literally be 300 guests. That's why some properties are cheap. They have made the decision that providing a breakfast that retails for $15-$20 to elite status guests is too expensive even though they're buying eggs for maybe $0.50 each. I have stayed at 200-room hotels during the pandemic in which 50 guests are ambassador or titanium.

I think it's a combination of several reasons:

      1) Marriott manages a plurality of its full-service branded properties outside North America, especially in Asia and the Middle East. So it's more likely the "good" properties in these places are actually Marriott-managed.
      2) These are competitive markets in which the big brands also compete against brands that don't have huge market share in North America. So there's more incentive to provide things and compete. Accor...

Accor and IHG's Intercontinental come to mind as brands that don't have a big presence in the US but are players against JW Marriott, Hilton's Conrad, etc. internationally.
      3) Some of these other countries don't have high labor costs and can provide more amenities and more services than a hotel in an expensive US labor market.

I was not given a choice the hotel just said they were giving points. This happened 2 or 3 times. I’m getting very frustrated with Marriott. For example, I smelled raw sewerage coming from the JW Marriott lobby in Austin, lounge closed and no breakfast offered...not that I wanted to eat with that smell. No cheaper rate for covid, either. Marriott response? We apologize for the inconvenience...no points, nothing. Typical.

I stay in Marriott hotels about every other week, most places are offering points with no option for breakfast. And the few that have offered a breakfast option are simply offering items out of a very limited café menu at $10 per day which doesn’t cover the cost of even a muffin and a coffee. Very disappointing.

Yes, their lounge was “open” but it was unmanned and the breakfast options were muffins, granola bars, packed juice, water, yogurt etc. something you would grab at the gas station for road trip. I acquired Platinum status for 2021 from Amex Bonvoy Brilliant card sign up, but for $450 annual fee, this benefit is pretty much a rip off deals. I am qualified for Platinum for 2022 thanks to promo / bonus for the stay earlier this year but I am thinking of going back to IHG or Hyatt for 2022. The main value prop of elite status with marriott is the earning bonuses and guaranteed late checkout — I would say there's like a 20-30% chance of actually receiving the other benefits and I bake that into my decision. Costs equal, this Marriott Titanium member books Hyatt (where I'm a lowly discoverist). Marriott begrudgingly wins my loyalty with slightly cheaper rates and a larger network. (Even more so during COVID interestingly — I've stayed at a lot of mid-tier hotels (eg. Autograph, Marriott, Westin) for 100-130/night in major cities in California during the pandemic).

I am able to mitigate the lack of consistency by doing some research on a particular Marriott hotel on flyertalk to see the likelyhood of elite benefits offered, but honestly I shouldn't have to.

Breakfast was in a closed lunch bag near the butter/stirs/ coffee and tea. It contained an orange, a very unhealthy choc krispies breakfast bar, a bagel in plastic wrap...i took the bagel out of plastic and toasted it and put butter on it...a plastic knife and napkin was included in bag. Business travel will never hit prior levels so hotels better be sure they keep the ones that are traveling happy.

We recently were in south padre texas at the marriot. 5 nights. I called the evening before and was informed "no one receives a free breakfast" they also denied our platinum for life status for room upgrades and even the option to select which side of the hotel our room was located. But for approximately 500.00 more per night there was an upgraded room available. No money no upgrade.

This goes far beyond breakfast to include the rest of the worthless perks. No upgrades or sugute nights available. It seems every other time i have to come back and ask for the welcome points since many dont even recognize your status. Marriott's true customers are their franchise owners

Three night stay a Marriott Indianapolis and we got 500 points as our Elite benefit. Lounge closed even though we were in a Concierge Level room. No breakfast or beverage credit even though restaurants and lobby bar was open. Would have been nice since breakfast was $45 the first two mornings. We just skipped breakfast the third day, checked out and ate on the road.
At least the AmEx offers on our cards covered the cost of breakfasts.

Remember, limited service hotels don't make a dime on free breakfast. We have the lowest rates and we are expected to give guests free food and internet for $70 bucks a night. It's not that we are playing games, that extra $7k a month that we spend giving you a free breakfast is going to paying our staff that wants to work, paying exorbitant franchise fees etc.. We are still just trying to survive and stay open. Remember a lot of the hotels you stay at are owned by mom and pops. Not big corporations

Hotels are not "playing games." With breakfast. I work at a Marriott. We do not offer limited breakfast because we are trying to cheat the system. We do not have the staff to provide a full breakfast. We do our best with what we've got. As a consumer feel free to choose which hotel you like based on the breakfast options, but it's crazy to me that you think we are trying to cheat the system as some evil hotel tycoon.

Great locations and fullservice. They are available all over the world
Get treated like crap at most Bonvoy and spent 2hrs on hold with Hilton ELITE line and then was told to shut up and listen by a supervisor. Have spoken to several former SPG SUPS who are quitting. Just as easy to book on Travago. You save money and still get benefits or with AMEX Platinum concierge. I have been a travel writer and have worked in the hospitality industry for over 40 years. I have not been offered 1 perk by Bonvoy since the switch. It's time for them to step up for loyal former SPGERS or they will continue to loose a valuable part of their clientele
Maybe our Westin stay was a step forward. But I doubt it. By the way the cruise industry is acting just as foolishly. Have had 5 cruises canceled with very little sympathy from them. So much for loyalty.

I'm pretty sure I am owed some compensation but Marriott states if you check out you have no claim for your compensation. I've ventured to Hilton to test the waters and I will give Marriott my choice of the two because of the late check out policy which is adhered to pretty well at all brands. However after reading above I'm going to have to see what Hyatt is all about. Some one got compensated more for a 4 day stay than I have in about 100 stays totaling 150 to 200 days at the Marriott.

Marriott in reality took over the superior Starwood portfolio and ended up destroying everything that brand/program stood for.

    2. Nick Guest

Actually, the problem isn’t or wasn’t the merger with Starwood. The problem was no longer owning or no longer managing its properties. Marriott is no longer a hotelier, at least in the case of most properties. It is merely a booking platform selling a product (guests) to owners. That’s the real problem. There are way too many hotels and brands for any quality control. All Marriott cares about is getting 2-7% of revenue from each reservation.

I stayed at least 10 nights at Hyatt's Carmel Valley Ranch during the pandemic and that hotel's response was to give us a $120 breakfast credit each day at their sit-down Valley Kitchen.

I stayed at Hilton's Santa Barbara Resort & Spa and as a highest-tier elite was offered a $15 credit in their overpriced store. Good for yoghurt and a coffee, maybe.

Guess what hotel brand gets our loyalty and the lion's share of our dollars, even when we don't have time to take them up on free delicious breakfast?

If you stayed at a resort in Hawaii, you were guaranteed a choice of breakfast in the restaurant or points upon check-in. The breakfast benefit at resorts (as another commentator observed) is not the same breakfast benefit as the club lounge or continental breakfast in the absence of an open club lounge. There is a compensation guarantee you can invoke.

Courtyard is not a brand that has ever given a complimentary breakfast to otherwise eligible elites. However, the $10 per person F&B coupon that you can choose at check-in should cover the cost of coffee and a parfait or coffee and something light from Courtyard's breakfast menu.

Hyatt Kills Marriott when it comes to taking care of elite members. I am a few nights from Titanium status and have no desire to get it. Nothing will change from the garbage service I get with platinum. Hyatt goes above and beyond to reward me for being a globalist.

I just stayed four nights at the Park Hyatt New York and Hyatt's "devaluation" was to comp room service breakfast, worth about $140 each day, more than $500 worth of free breakfast for our stay. They even took care of the tip. The Huntington Beach Hyatt Resort and Spa closed its club and gave Globalists free breakfast at Watertable, a superior restaurant.
