NAME: Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport
LOCATION: Paris, France
DATE: November 2024
REVIEW RATING:
BEN SAYS: The Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is basic but functional, with a convenient location, friendly service, and nice public spaces with a solid selection of food and drinks. Moxy is one of my preferred limited service hotel brands.

For the next stop of my trip to Paris and Cairo, I spent a night at the 292-room Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). I had a very early morning flight, so I figured staying at an airport hotel made the most sense. Besides, it had been some time since I last stayed at a Moxy, which is one of Marriott’s “hip” limited service brands.

I’ve gotta say, I had a great stay at the Moxy. While the rooms are super simple, I love how consistent the brand is, and I also prefer the public spaces of Moxy properties to those of most other limited service brands. While I of course prefer the in-terminal Sheraton Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, which I reviewed a while ago, it’s also significantly more expensive.

Booking the Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle

I booked my stay at Moxy Charles de Gaulle Airport with cash, as the rate was just €97. I could’ve redeemed Marriott Bonvoy points, and the rate was 17,000 points for the night. However, based on my valuation of 0.7 cents per Bonvoy point, paying cash was the better deal.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle location

The Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is a short distance from the airport, in an area that has a bunch of airport hotels.

All of these hotels can be reached via the CDGVAL train system, which offers free transfers between the airport and the neighboring areas. The train currently runs from 4AM until 1AM daily, and the stop is about five minutes from the hotel. Specifically, the Moxy is near the car park stop, which is the end of the line.

Since I was traveling light, I found it easy to get to the CDGVAL station, though if you have a lot of luggage or limited mobility, you might find this to be more challenging.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle lobby & check-in

I arrived at the Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport in the early afternoon, and quickly found myself in the playful lobby. Moxy properties merge the front desk and food & beverage experience (presumably to limit staffing), as you check-in in the same general area where you can order food and drinks.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle reception

My check-in process was quick and friendly, and within a minute, I had a key to my room, along with a voucher for a complimentary drink at the bar (wine, beer, or soft drink), on account of my Bonvoy elite status.

The lobby had plenty of seating. Inside the entrance and to the left was an area where you could comfortably lounge (whether you want to just relax or work), with a variety of seating choices.

There was even a business center with a couple of iMacs and a printer.

Then inside the entrance and to the right was the main social space of the hotel. You don’t have to order any food or drinks to sit here. I quite like these kinds of spaces — especially when jet lagged, I always work best when I’m not in my room (where the temptation is to sit and bed, and then fall asleep), so I appreciate the “proper” tables that one can sit at.

But even if you’re not looking to work, there’s the opportunity to have fun, with things like foosball tables.

I also love how this property leans into being an airport hotel, with an airplane fuselage that has little nooks you can sit in.

If you prefer sitting outside, there are also some benches, though it was a bit chilly for that during my stay.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle room

With key in hand, I headed up to the fifth (top) floor, where my room was located. The hotel has a bank of three elevators.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle elevators

This hotel has really long hallways, due to its rectangular shape, and my room, 506, was quite a distance from the elevators (which I suppose is good in terms of minimizing noise).

Moxy properties generally don’t have much variation between rooms, and this location was no exception. I was in a standard queen room, marketed as being 17 square meters (183 square feet). Let me emphasize upfront that Moxy rooms are simple — they typically don’t have proper desks, don’t have phones, and don’t have an enclosed closet space.

The room was… like every other Moxy room I’ve ever stayed in? I found the queen bed to be quite well padded, though I do wish that more than two pillows were offered (fortunately I was traveling alone, because otherwise I’d really struggle with just one pillow).

There was a chair along the interior corner of the room, though it was definitely a tight squeeze.

The room also had a wall-mounted TV, plus a little glass table of sorts, with a stool you could sit on. It’s not exactly the most comfortable place to sit, so as I said above, I tried to sit in the lobby while working.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle queen room

Back near the entrance was an exposed space to hang clothes, along with a luggage rack — I liked the aviation themed wallpaper!

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle queen room “closet”

The room had views of a parking lot, so it wasn’t exactly the most inspiring view for an airport hotel.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle room view

The bathroom was extremely compact, with a sink, a toilet, and a walk-in shower.

Toiletries were in reusable containers, and were frustratingly difficult to use. The “pump” feature just didn’t work very well, and it was a pain to actually get any decent amount of liquid out.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle room toiletries

Wi-Fi in the room was fast and free. I will say, sound insulation in the rooms wasn’t great, and you could hear when other guests would slam their doors. I sleep with white noise (I use an app), so it didn’t bother me much, but for those who are sensitive to noise, it’s worth being aware of.

As is standard at Moxy properties, ironing facilities were available on select guest floors, since that’s (obviously) not offered in the room. They sure choose an interesting picture for that, eh?

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle gym

The Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport has a gym on the lobby level, which is basic, but does the trick. It has a treadmill, an elliptical, a bike, a bench with free weights, and a punching bag.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle food & drinks

The bar area at the Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport is open daily from 6AM until 10PM, with a grab and go selection available 24/7. To start, below is the selection you can pick up at any hour, with everything from wine, to beer, to soft drinks, to salads, to packaged snacks.

While I wasn’t at the hotel for breakfast (it’s served from 6AM until 10AM), there was a limited lunch and dinner menu, which looked quite decent. It’s written on a board above the area where you order.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle food menu

I had a late lunch at the hotel, and had a Pepsi Zero with my drink voucher (I didn’t feel like having alcohol).

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle drink

To eat, I had a salmon bowl, with salmon tartare, mango, cucumbers, and tomatoes, which was quite tasty.

Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle food

Late at night I came back for dinner (there aren’t many other options in the area), and had a cheese pizza, which was good enough.

Bottom line

The Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport was perfect for my quick overnight, prior to an early morning flight. Moxy properties are basic, but they’re consistent, which I like. I go in with reasonable expectations, and I’m rarely disappointed.

This Moxy had clean and functional (but petite) rooms, friendly staff, easy access to the airport, and nice social spaces, with a respectable selection of food and drinks. Moxy is among my preferred limited service brands, primarily due to the public spaces, and the decent selection of food and drinks (compared to something like a Hyatt Place or Hampton Inn, for example).

I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again. Of course I’d rather stay at the Sheraton in the terminal, but I wanted to mix it up this time, and this is also typically less than half the cost.

What do you make of the Moxy Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport?

Moxy CDG used to be our go-to when we had an early flight out. Loved the convenience and prices. However, they recently have too many reviews citing bedbugs. So now we stay nearby at the Courtyard.

Considering the other basic/bare bones offerings at CDG/near the RER/CDGVAL (ibis, ibis Styles, HIE, Mercure), the Moxy, as others have mentioned, is great for the price. All of the aforementioned Accor hotels are really falling apart - the ibis Styles has a cute Star Wars theme, but it is really beaten up and not the cleanest property I've stayed at; the ibis has zero sound proofing and is also very beat up; and the Mercure...

All of the aforementioned Accor hotels are really falling apart - the ibis Styles has a cute Star Wars theme, but it is really beaten up and not the cleanest property I've stayed at; the ibis has zero sound proofing and is also very beat up; and the Mercure is perhaps the shoddiest Mercure in Western Europe I've stayed at recently. What they all have going for them is that they're just a minute's walk from the RER - no need to take the CDGVAL like the hotels on the other side of Roissypôle, where the Moxy is located - but I'm not sure that's worth staying at these properties for, unless you've got a ton of luggage/baggages. For quality vs price, the Courtyard has worked very nicely for me - usually about 15 EUR more than all the limited service options, but with much more on offer.

The Moxy's lack of bar fridge is one cut I won't cop. The ability not to be able to chill water, soft drinks, wine, or even as basic as not being able to keep medication cool is unnacceptable. Do better.

All room amenities are listed when booking - Moxy is a bare bones brand under the Marriott Umbrella; they aren't selling something they are not. If you want full or full-er service, there's the Sheraton, Residence Inn, Pullman, Novotel, Hilton, and Courtyard all at CDG. So...maybe do better research...

I was living out of a suitcase for most of last year and stayed at a number of airport moxys. Given many airport hotels are pretty dated, I am happy with a moxy. Like the other commentator mentioned, they are very consistent, always kept very clean, have the basics i need (decent food, laundry, gym) and great noise insulation. Prices are definitely increasing but otherwise, I never had a bad stay (or an amazing stay. It serves a purpose and does it well)

As far as I know, the complimentary welcome drink is not dependent on 'status'. I got one in VIE, and I don't have status.

I love the combination of location by CDGVAL, brand standards of Moxy and usually affordable price level. Once out of several stays (the others being fine) I switched rooms four times, all bedsheets were dirty and reused. Hotel full. I am Platinum and neither the Platinum desk nor the hotel felt empowered to move me without extra cost. I gave up and slept with my clothes on after they improvised something. I have pics of the sheets somewhere. After my complaint it came out they didnt get any of the ordered bedsheets from the laundry company so they had a massive shortage and rerented most rooms without changing sheets between guests. I got some mediocre compensation and a free pizza. Have gone back since after a few months of avoidance and it was fine again.

By car its not great to access but possible.

Wait. What. You're telling me the hotel admitted it didn't have clean linen and was instead re-using dirty linen? That's easily 150,000 points if not a lawsuit.

    2. Colin Guest

      a lawsuit? seriously?

    3. Michael Guest

Yes. They admitted. I think I got 5k and a pizza. Platinum service line was a complete let down. I just don’t have the time anymore to fight for compensation.

In May 2024 I stayed at the nearby Residence Inn and had a spacious studio. Two nights' charge, all in, was 310 Euros. From my room I could see the control tower, and if I angled to the right, the static Concorde on display. The best part was the sumptuous European breakfast, shared with the co-joined Courtyard. Their guests had to pay 27 Euros. I, too, found the train easy to use, and connected to the metro to center city Paris.

Stayed at the Moxy CDG airport in January and had a similar experience. Very basic but functional rooms for a 1 night stay and the price (I paid 95 euros) was right. CDG/VAL works incredibly well. One caution: I did arrive by taxi from Paris late evening and the entrance to the hotel if you are dropped off in a car pretty much doesn't exist. You get dropped off at the curb and have to walk along a small pathway with no signs to the back of the building to get to the entrance. And ditto, those MUK dispensers don't work.

I had a layover here last year and stayed at this moxy. I HATED it. Marriotts crappy app wouldn't let me check in and instructed me to check in at the front. There was a long line and it was around 8pm so I was tired and grumpy. It took 45min to check in. There is no dedicated line for elite members unfortunately. There was a long line and it was around 8pm so I was tired and grumpy. It took 45min to check in. There is no dedicated line for elite members unfortunately. One thing you should know is that if you're one of those with a lot of heavy luggage you'll probably feel it because the walk from the shuttle station to the hotel lobby is a bit of a hike and someone thought it was a good idea to make you walk up an incline and little steps everywhere.... And rats in the morning. Your terminal might also require a 10-15 walk to the shuttle train like mine was. I was only here for 6 hours so I didn't really care about amenities. The room is tiny as you would expect from moxy but had a terrible smell in the bathroom that I didn't even want to know. That said, the other hotels in that lot seem just as worn out and price wise about the same. Moxy is probably on the low side among those 4+ hotels. You really only want to stay here for convenience for an early flight.

Man, when you say consistency you're not kidding. That lobby and room are pretty much carbon copies of the Moxy Frankfurt Airport I stayed at a while back, right down to the furniture. (So if anyone out there is looking for a review of the MOXY FRA, if you've seen this review, you seen a review for the Frankfurt one as well.)

When the Hyatt Place / House were still Category 1 (And I've stayed there for many 3500/5000 points nights), it's either Sheraton or HP/HH for me, either go all the way on convenience, or great value (plus, adding 2 Uber trips and HP/HH still comes ahead in value. And the room is way bigger and breakfast is way nicer.

Only stayed at this so-called hotel brand ONE TIME, never again. Bunch of berated millennial cuckolds in plaid hanging around as guests, horrendous Service. Not appreciative of being Ordered to check-in at a BAR, I am a classy person and not an alcoholic

I, too, only stayed once. Room was overly basic and too small for my tastes and at the price point. However, I didn't have the same personal insecurities as you when it came to the other guests. Everyone was quite friendly and did their own thing. Perhaps I'm just lacking the same personality flaws you have in spades. Though I do dislike what feels like forced mingling in the lobby-bar. I'm just not the target market, perhaps.

It's interesting that the post says it's 'only' €97 without giving us any context in terms of how much was being charged by the other hotels in that area on the day in question. €97 isn't some kind of mad bargain - I may have paid 50% more than that to stay at CDG, but that was in a very comfortable room at the Pullman, on a rate including full breakfast.

We stayed at the Vienna Airport Moxy three weeks ago. We get the queen room w/ a separate pull out couch for our daughter. They are pretty basic rooms, but just for an overnight at the airport, they serve their purpose. They ended up giving us 4 free drink vouchers, but my wife didn't want hers, so that was nice :). Woke up early for our flight, walked to the terminal and we're on our way.

I've had the exact same issue with those Muk. soap dispensers in the LCY Moxy last month, ha.

I didn't realize Moxy offered ironing boards on select floors. One of my biggest pet peeves in recent years is that irons / ironing boards are available in fewer and fewer hotel rooms - the little steamer things some hotels include are no substitute. Sometimes you need to touch up a dress shirt before a meeting.

  18. FNT Delta Diamond Guest

For 97 euros that looks fine, although I would recommend staying at the Holiday Inn or Marriott on the other side of the airport in Roissy-en-France proper. Roissy is a small town or village with a bunch of airport hotels on the ring roads around it. It's actually a charming French town or village that has a distinct countryside feel to it. There are a half-dozen restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotels.

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ FNT Delta Diamond -- That's a great point. However, the hotels in that area require taking a bus, right? The reason I chose the Moxy is because the shuttle bus service in that area only start at 6AM (as far as I know), so I would've had to take a rideshare. Meanwhile the CDGVAL starts running at 4AM, so this area is ideal for early morning flights.

    2. FNT Delta Diamond Guest

Yes, a bus, taxi or rideshare. But I'm not sure that would take any longer than the shuttle tram to the Moxy.
