If you’re flying Singapore Airlines Suites Class or first class in the coming weeks and like champagne, you’re in for a treat, as flagged by Mainly Miles…
In this post:
Singapore Airlines serving special Krug champagne
While Singapore Airlines ordinarily serves Krug Grande Cuvée Brut Champagne in its top cabin, the airline is celebrating the holidays in a special way, with two limited time Krug options:
- From December 14 to December 31, 2023, Singapore Airlines is serving 2004 Krug Brut Champagne on all Suites Class and first class flights
- The exception is that from December 24 to 26, 2023, Singapore Airlines is serving Krug Brut Rosé Champagne on all Suites Class and first class flights
Look, I’m not going to try to paraphrase the tasting notes on these champagnes and pass them off as my own, so I’ll simply point to how much these various options ordinarily retail for, and then you can draw your own conclusions (while of course acknowledging that a more expensive champagne isn’t necessarily better). Here’s the pricing in USD for these three champagnes from a wine retailer that has fair pricing:
- Krug Grande Cuvée Brut Champagne retails for $199 per bottle
- 2004 Krug Brut Champagne retails for $499 per bottle
- Krug Brut Rosé Champagne retails for $299 per bottle
This isn’t the first time that Singapore Airlines has served vintage Krug as a special treat for passengers. However, this was last done in late 2019, so it has been about four years. Meanwhile we have seen the limited time Krug Rose over Christmas more recently.
How this fits into Singapore Airlines’ champagne selection
Back in the day, Singapore Airlines served both Dom Perignon and Krug in first class, which was a mighty nice choice to have. However, in late 2022, Singapore Airlines dropped Dom Perignon. Or perhaps more accurately, Dom Perignon dropped Singapore Airlines. That’s because Emirates entered into an exclusive agreement to serve Dom Perignon onboard its flights.
Nowadays Singapore Airlines serves three different champagnes in Suites Class and first class. In addition to Krug, the airline is otherwise currently serving 2012 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, as well as the 2007 Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millenaires.
So between those three options, I think most passengers will be pretty well hydrated (or dehydrated, as the case may be). 😉
Bottom line
Passengers traveling on Singapore Airlines this month are in for a treat. The airline is pouring 2004 Krug through December 31, 2023. The exception is that on December 24-26, the airline will be serving Krug Rose, in celebration of Christmas.
If you’re flying Singapore Airlines during this timeframe in Suites Class or first class, please have a glass for me!
Will any OMAAT readers benefit from this upgraded champagne on their upcoming flights?
I was served this 2004 on my Suites flight in March this year!
If having 3 champagnes, it makes sense to have a variety of styles, for the variety of customer preferences.
So odd to have two that are Blanc de Blancs.
I would replace one with a Blanc de Noirs or a Rose (but definitely keep the Krug!)
ANA removed vintage '04 Krug from their latest menu so maybe it went to SQ lol.
Salon>Krug>>Dom Perignon
Depends on which label of Krug (and vintages for that matter). Krug’s Clos d’Ambonnay or du Mesnil can absolutely stand toe to toe with Salon and even surpass it in many vintages. Even “regular” vintage Krug in a year like 96, 02, 08 would be preferable to something like an 07 or 13 Salon. And that’s all on the ground… at altitude, I would lean pretty heavily toward Krug’s style.
krug and charles hedsik are my favs don't sleep on that mil de millionaires i go back and forth which I like more.
The Krug Grand Cuvee is >$199 -- the link is to an expired listing. This year's release at the same shop is $259.99: https://www.klwines.com/p/i?i=1685822&searchId=44f3fe6a-bbe4-40e9-8d8b-9e7c0bf3249d&searchServiceName=klwines-prod-productsearch&searchRank=7
It's hard to taste the subtleties that separate good from great champagnes at 30,000 feet so most of this is simply label chasing. I get that it's fun to taste a label you otherwise wouldn't buy on a flight but from the perspective of really getting value or enjoyment out of a vintage champagne this ain't it.
Ditto ... Ditto ... For that matter maybe a bargain basement vintage is simply decanted in the eponymously liveried bottles ! ... Or maybe I'm just insanely jealous of the lifestyles of the Rich n' Famous and/or mileage bloggers ! ... Although in full transparency as a former airline employee I'll admit to being spoiled by pass travel perks..... but nowadays they're virtually useless...Nonetheless grateful I took advantage of them when they were worthwhile ...
Recently surprised to enjoy Dom Perignon Lady Gaga in The Chelsea Lounge NY. More amazed than surprised actually!
Silly fun fact (which I am sure some people here will hate - my apologies for that) Madonna, while being interviewed by Ellen, revealed Krug rose to be her favourite. So of course I had to try it ($499 AUD here in Sydney a few years back which is insane but such is life). It was lovely, but a little bit sweet for my liking, however a glass or two for a celebration like Christmas is perfect. Glad to see SQ splurging a bit on the wine cellar budget!
Hey you like what you like. Just don't get suckered into paying (a lot) more for champagne that you're not sure actually tastes better than the base level labels.
