Copa Airlines is a bit of a powerhouse in Latin America, connecting the region via its hub in Panama (PTY). The airline is incredibly efficient, operating an all-Boeing 737 fleet, and is known for its attractive fares, good schedule, and operational reliability.
If you ask me, up until now, the one biggest downside to the Copa passenger experience has been the carrier’s lack of inflight connectivity. That will finally be changing, and Copa is going from zero to hero on this front, by rolling out Starlink. The catch? Copa is the first airline to not offer this on a complimentary basis, which is a bit puzzling.
In this post:
All Copa Airlines flights will have Starlink Wi-Fi by early 2027
Up until now, Copa didn’t have Wi-Fi on any aircraft, making it the largest airline in Latin America to not at all have committed to connectivity. Fortunately this strategy has suddenly shifted. In April 2026, Copa announced it would introduce Starlink Wi-Fi throughout its fleet, making it the first airline in Latin America to commit to the service. So not only will the airline finally be getting inflight connectivity, but it’ll be very fast.
Starlink is known for its high-speed, low-latency broadband internet, and the service is offered gate to gate. Starlink Wi-Fi allows for live streaming, productivity similar to on the ground (with high upload and download speeds), gaming, e-commerce, and more. Note that Starlink isn’t allowing inflight voice or video calls with this service.
So, with what timeline can we expect Copa to introduce Starlink Wi-Fi? The carrier’s first plane with Starlink is now flying as of July 2026, and the expectation is that the entire fleet will have it by the first quarter of 2027, so that’s a great rollout speed.
Copa currently has a fleet of just over 100 Boeing 737s, including the 737-700, 737-800, 737 MAX 8, and 737 MAX 9. I’ve gotta say, Wi-Fi on Copa will be a game changer. The airline has a very convenient network, but lack of Wi-Fi when traveling on a very long journey between north and south is less than ideal.

Copa Airlines won’t offer Starlink for free, which is puzzling
Here’s what’s interesting, as I see it — up until now, every airline that has offered Starlink Wi-Fi has provided it for free for all passengers. That won’t be the case on Copa Airlines.
The service will be free for business class passengers, as well as ConnectMiles PreferMember Presidential, Platinum, and Gold members. Furthermore, customers with Starlink Residential and Roam subscriptions will also receive complimentary access onboard.
However, for all other passengers, there will be a cost to use the service. That’s confusing, because up until now the widely held belief has been that one of SpaceX’s terms that airlines had to agree to when offering Starlink is that it had to be free for all passengers, and wouldn’t be directly monetized.
That’s not just some random rumor, but I’ve heard it from some pretty reliable people, including people at airlines who were responsible for making these decisions. So was that not actually the case? Has Starlink updated its policy, and now allows airlines to monetize this? Is Copa just confused?
Obviously paid Starlink Wi-Fi won’t have as much widespread appeal and won’t do as much to boost net promoter scores as offering it on a complimentary basis. But still, offering truly high speed Wi-Fi at a cost is better than not offering it, so I’d still view this as a net positive. I’m confused, though…

Bottom line
Copa Airlines has started the process of installing Starlink Wi-Fi, with the plan being that it’ll be available on all aircraft by the first quarter of 2027. This is very exciting, since Copa previously didn’t have any Wi-Fi, so this is quite the upgrade.
The only sad thing is that Starlink won’t actually be free, except for premium passengers and elite members. The belief has been that airlines have to offer Starlink Wi-Fi for free, as a contract term, so it’s really not clear to me what’s going on here.
What do you make of Copa rolling out Starlink Wi-Fi, and charging for it?
Copa is TRASH!!!! They use to be a very good airline but have basically become a budget carrier and watered down their product as much as possible. However, they are much better than Avianca, and have a very convenient network, so they are able to capture a wide audience.
Basically they are doing everything they can to penny pinch and extract money from the traveling public.
