American Airlines Will Fly To Tulum’s New Airport

American Airlines has become the latest airline to announce service to Tulum’s new airport, following similar announcements from Delta Air Lines and Spirit Airlines. While the announcement was first made a few days ago, the schedules have now been revealed, and flights are on sale.

American will fly from three cities to Tulum

As of March 28, 2024, American will be launching four daily, year-round, nonstop flights from three airports to Tulum (TQO). This will be comprised of the following routes, all operated by Boeing 737-800s:

  • One daily flight from Charlotte (CLT)
  • Two daily flights from Dallas (DFW)
  • One daily flight from Miami (MIA)

The once daily Charlotte to Tulum flight will operate with the following schedule (this is an 1,114-mile flight, and is blocked at roughly three hours in each direction):

AA157 Charlotte to Tulum departing 11:20AM arriving 1:20PM
AA157 Tulum to Charlotte departing 2:20PM arriving 6:15PM

The twice daily Dallas to Tulum flights will operate with the following schedules (this is a 1,050-mile flight, and is blocked at roughly three hours in each direction):

AA159 Dallas to Tulum departing 8:30AM arriving 11:20AM
AA159 Tulum to Dallas departing 12:20PM arriving 3:10PM

AA163 Dallas to Tulum departing 12:20PM arriving 3:10PM
AA163 Tulum to Dallas departing 4:10PM arriving 7:20PM

The once daily Miami to Tulum flight will operate with the following schedule (this is a 609-mile flight, and is blocked at roughly two hours in each direction):

AA172 Miami to Tulum departing 12:10PM arriving 1:10PM
AA172 Tulum to Miami departing 2:10PM arriving 5:10PM

All of these new routes are expected to be launched as of the same day that the airport opens for international flights. American is really going all-in here, as Delta announced one daily flight and Spirit announced two daily flights.

American Airlines is planning three routes to Tulum

With these routes, American will offer one-stop connectivity to Tulum from over 200 destinations. This complements American’s winter schedule to nearby Cancun (CUN), where American plans to operate a staggering 40 peak-day departures to 18 cities in the United States.

Details of Tulum’s new international airport

The new Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport in Tulum has been a long time coming. Bidding for construction of the airport started well over a decade ago, in 2011. However, nothing happened for many years, and when Andrés Manuel López Obrador became president of Mexico in 2018, the project wasn’t a priority.

However, with Tulum’s increasing popularity (especially since the start of the pandemic) and capacity limitations at Cancun Airport, the project has once again been emphasized. Construction started in 2022, and is expected to be completed in late 2023. That’s a mighty fast airport construction project!

As it currently stands, domestic operations at the airport should start in December 2023, with Aeromexico and Viva Aerobus being the two first airlines to serve the airport. I can’t help but wonder if that timeline might still be a bit optimistic, given the short construction timeline. Regardless, it sounds like things should be up and running by early next year.

Viva Aerobus will also fly to Tulum Airport

Bottom line

Tulum’s Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport will soon commence operations. American Airlines has announced plans to launch service there from Charlotte, Dallas, and Miami, with a total of four daily flights. These flights are now on sale. This follows similar announcements from Delta and Spirit, and I imagine we’ll see similar additions from United (and possibly some other airlines) soon.

What do you make of American’s plans to fly to Tulum?

    Ben,
Can you do a write up on your thoughts on the revamped Business Extra program changes please. I have always thought it a very mediocre program at best, right from their customer service to the actual portal itself. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the old versus the new program being introduced.
    Many thanks Sir!

There are handful of people, yourself included, that are completely incapable of discussing the topic but can only focus on other people.
When the comments sections of articles mention users before they have even participated, it is clear that the inmates are ruling the asylum.
You are truly to be pitied. Your mother must be so proud of you.

And, since you are incapable of even picking up on the humor, American is indeed the best positioned to serve Tulum but that won't get discussed here because mental midgets like you hijack every conversation and ben doesn't have what it takes to stop his site from being taken over.

Tim, you think you're the smartest guy in the room. You post long rants that frequently belittle other commenters. You distort facts to fit your narrative. You're incapable of admitting even minor, inconsequential mistakes.

You're the Donald Trump of aviation.

As much as I might disagree with Tim on occasion, I totally agree with his post.

We’re both faulty at times, but he’s correct with his post.

when there are a small handful of people that incessantly throw my name into multiple discussions even before I participate in them, there is a problem and it needs to be dealt with.

and when it becomes acceptable by Ben by not cleaning up the crap, then the entire comment section suffers.

Nobody comes here for personal mudslinging.

And rather than including or referencing me in the articles, Ben needs to take the high road and lead.

      Seriously, tim
You come on here name calling at everyone half the time then resorting to diminutive mental state calling for those that dare correct you on your “facts”, which aren’t facts, they’re opinions.
It really is tragic that you’re now trying to poorly shame lucky for your own name calling and mudslinging

Grow up. You’re responsible for most of the random name calling on here

    8. Tim Dunn Diamond

      Max,
you would desperately like to think that the issue is shaming Ben so as to hide from your own dysfunctional behavior.
The only people that are being shamed are you and BG that started this thread.
Name calling and manipulation is tacky and childish, right? so why do you do it? All I have done is treat you exactly as you are doing to me. My user name is clear. Funny...

no, nobody is responsible for name calling or childish behavior except the person that uses it.
The sooner you take responsibility for your own behavior and for discussing the topic at hand instead of users, the happier we will all be.
And as much as I would like Ben to ban people who can't treat people decently, all you have to do is make sure YOU do what is best for the site and represent of how you not only would treat someone in person but also how you want to be treated.
And then tell people that behave the way what I hope will be how you USED TO BEHAVE is to say "knock it off"

    9. OCTinPHL Diamond

Tim: grow up. You complain about people being incapable of discussing the topic, but then resort to calling people mental midgets. Clearly people are getting to you when you resort to writing “your mother must be so proud of you.”

Are there capacity constraints and/or gate slotting limitations for each airline? Curious as to who can and is flying there (e.g. United) and to what extent the airport can accommodate.

Religion has nothing to do with her "performance." She is narcissistic, egotistical and devoid of any comprehension of social norms.
Singing on a plane or elevator or any other enclosed space is unacceptable. To argue proves how disconnected she is from reality.
And, yes, the "world's only perfect airline" (as some would say) does a far better job of training its employees to de-escalate than most other airlines.
    It is most hypocritical...

It is most hypocritical to judge her on her religion (which apparently isn't our own?) and ignore a principle that should apply to us all - "he who is without sin should throw the first stone."
But let's be clear that this site has become a cesspool for the internet losers who themselves find joy in mocking others because they don't have the mental horsepower or emotional maturity to participate in the discussion.
Gary and Brett told these same people their conduct is no longer welcome and, to nobody's surprise, their sites are much better off - and OMAAT is the last refuge for these VERY FEW people.
Nobody comes here to read the personal spats that anyone has with anyone else. Your best readers -the ones that actually bother to register their names and email addresses - come here for the generally very good content and good discussion from 98% of the participants.
Put your big boy pants on, Ben, and clean up the cesspool. Your readership or your page clicks won't go down.

And then maybe you'll be in a slightly better position to condemn someone else for how they live their life.

and good for American. They clearly are now THE BEST POSITIONED airline to serve Tulum. Too bad Delta didn't know what AA had planned.

Expecting Jetblue to enter the chat soon and add JFK, after cutting so many LGA flights.

It’ll be interesting to see where United will fly from.
IAH is an obvious one for United.
I’d be surprised if DEN got a flight since Iah could handle most of that traffic. Ord and EWR would be my other two airports to Tulum. Three total.

  11. Peter Guest

AA also flies two daily flights DFW to Cozumel in winter (maybe one in the off season).
Love the 787 option from DFW to CUN (via Avios). Does UA or DL flying lie-flat to the region?

    1. noah Guest

I"ve seen lie flats on JFK-CUN before on aA

    2. Brian Guest

Surprised seasonal JFK service isnt being offered. Would seem an easy market to charge a premium, especially if you are the only carrier offering non stop service

How did this happen? Thought Delta was "uniquely positioned" to fly to Tulum?

    1. roger Guest

WTH would Delta be 'uniquely positioned"? Delta has no advantage serving Tulum over any US Carrier and even their partnership with Aeromexico probably keeps them in third position in relative service to all of Mexico with AA and UAL having much broader coverage.

    2. Julie Guest

He's just joking about Delta's news release saying they were uniquely positioned to serve Tulum...

When Spirit is serving Tulum too, there's nothing unique about Delta. :)

But "He who shall not be named" lost his mind that Lucky dared question Delta's uniqueness. Quite an entertaining psychotic rant in the comments section on that OMAAT article.

    3. Tim Dunn Diamond

the psychotic rage is not being able to accept that Delta's statement was indeed true at the time they announced their service, the first of the US airlines to do so.
Let us know if they repeat that claim but you and I and everyone else knows exactly what they meant.

    4. Julie Guest

Amusing that you view yourself as the author of a psychotic rant.

    5. Roberto Guest

Timmy, being the first to announce doesn’t make you the best. It’s clear with the amount of destinations AA is going to offer to Tulum, and it’s only a matter of time before UA/AS/B6 add flights more significant than a single ATL frequency. Lololol.

    6. BenjaminGuttery Diamond

Careful Timmy, wipe the foam from Your jowls. Getting a bid rabid on this one....

    7. DesertGhost Guest

      Julie,
Don't you realize that Delta is the world's ONLY PERFECT airline? That's why it's uniquely positioned for every possible flight it offers - at least in some poster's eyes.

BUT ... As one ponders these important issues - every airline is "uniquely positioned" - because of its hub structure - so the claim of uniqueness is P.R. gobbledygook.

    8. Robero Guest

I was in this area earlier this week. Was astonished to see how fast the Tren Maya had been built - it was only *proposed* in 2018, and they're running test trains with revenue service starting next month. (Contrast that with the US, where we wouldn't even have finished the library of requisite studies.) If Lopez Orbrador wants something built, it gets BUILT.
