InterContinental Ambassador Enrollment Offer: Free Night After One Stay

InterContinental has just launched a lucrative promotion if you either sign-up or renew an Ambassador membership.

What is InterContinental Ambassador?

IHG has a rather complicated rewards program structure. In addition to the IHG Rewards Club program that covers all of IHG’s brands, InterContinental has its own guest recognition program, called Ambassador.

Ambassador status costs either $200 or 40,000 points for a 12-month membership (I value IHG points at ~0.5 cents each, so to me it’s roughly breakeven as to whether you should pay cash or redeem points). It comes with the following perks every time you stay at an InterContinental:

  • A guaranteed one category upgrade
  • A $20 credit to use towards the hotel’s restaurant and bar
  • 4PM late check-out
  • Complimentary internet and mineral water
  • Complimentary weekend night reward
  • IHG Rewards Club Platinum Elite status

Ambassador members receive room upgrades

Get a free night when you join or renew

InterContinental has just launched a solid promotion for those who sign-up for or renew their Ambassador status. Specifically, those members can earn a free night certificate valid at any IHG property costing up to 40,000 points per night, though there will be some hoops to jump through:

  • This is valid for enrollment or renewal between July 30 and November 15, 2020
  • Complete one qualifying, paid stay at an InterContinental, Kimpton, or Regent, by January 31, 2021
  • You’ll then be awarded a free night certificate valid at a property priced at 40,000 points per night or less, which can be redeemed for a stay through April 30, 2021; this is similar to the free night certificate offered on the IHG Premier Card
  • The award night will be deposited into your account within 72 hours after check-out of your qualifying stay
  • This award night is in addition to the weekend night reward that is included as an Ambassador member benefit

Is this promotion worth it?

This is one of the better offers we’ve seen from InterContinental for an Ambassador enrollment or renewal. If you’re someone who stays at InterContinentals with any frequency and would have renewed or joined anyway, then this is a great offer.

I value the free night certificate offered with this at well over $100, so that knocks down the “real” cost of the membership significantly. I’d also argue that the value of Ambassador status increased recently, as you can now redeem the complimentary weekend night reward at Kimpton properties as well, on any night of the week. That alone could cover the cost of the membership fee.

Otherwise, though, this is a somewhat restrictive offer. You need to complete a stay in the coming months, and then your free night certificate is only valid a few months beyond that. The promotion could definitely make sense, but if you’re not someone who stays at InterContinentals with any frequency, then this might not be worth it.

Weekend night rewards can now be used at Kimptons

Bottom line

InterContinental is offering a free night certificate after one stay when you enroll or renew your Ambassador membership. This is a promotion that many InterContinental loyalists could find to be worthwhile.

For those who were on the fence about an Ambassador membership, this could be the offer they needed to get them to finally sign up.

Note that IHG Rewards Club is separately offering a promotion to new members who complete two stays, which you can read about here.

Do you plan on taking advantage of this Ambassador enrollment offer?

  1. Biggest limitation is the 40,000 point cap. How many IC’s are at that price point? Furthermore if travel bands continue into 2021/2022 will they extend this free night or do you lose it?

  2. @EricZ It looks like the free night is valid at any IHG brand, so that’s not as restricting. The biggest problem is the April 2021 expiration.

  3. IHG, the company that when they closed the Kimpton in Chicago, dumped the certificate back into our account just before it was about to expire and then refused to extend it so we could use it at another property

    Nice, real nice.

  4. For those based in Texas, the Intercontinental Stephen F Austin in downtown Austin is regularly $94 with my corporate rate. I’m sure many other corporate travelers have a similarly good rate. That makes the one night IC/Kimpton stay requirement pretty easy.

  5. @MattR – may be for any property in the portfolio but those sub 40,000 points aren’t really expensive hotels. At least not force yourself into this promotion of paying for the Club just to get this free night. time restrictive and limited to cheaper properties. You could probably find better pricing on 2 separate reservations vs going through this – that’s all.

If you knew you had an upcoming IC stay then sure its a throwaway but I couldn’t see scheduling something around this promo. Even with a $94 rate in Austin, you need a reason to want to stay there for $94, and with a “corporate” rate, most companies aren’t doing a lot of travel now. You could use the corporate rate for personal use but why spend $94 on a hotel to get 40,000 points? Maybe you come out $100 a head but again you could probably find better individual deals elsewhere.

  6. InterContinental Ambassador membership expiry has been pushed back by six months until June 30, 2021. So no need to renew at this time!

  7. Another worthless promotion from IHG. Very restrictive and difficult similar to their break-points. Whoever came up with this one in their management team deserves an ambassador award!

  8. Did I miss a major change or is the “free weekend night certificate” still a BOGO certificate?
IIRC, it is only valid as the second night of a paid stay.

  9. @Lucky – I just received the marketing email from IHG with the details of the promotion, which also ***I shit you not*** states a benefit of The Ambassador program is “Free flights on Spirit Airlines”. I can’t find any details online and I’m scratching my head pretty hard right now. Any ideas on this?

  10. Also saw the free Spirit Flights. Curious when we’ll see more info about it….

  11. @Lucky So in all new sign up member is getting 2 free nights (one being weekend certificate and one for the promotional free night upto 40k points)?

  12. @Kalbos or @Lucky: My Ambassador membership was supposed to expire last April 2020. IHG extended it to 11/1/2020. Does yours have a more recent expiry date that they extended yours until 6/30/21?

  13. @Sel, D and @Lucky: I received the same marketing email, with the Spirit Airlines offer stating:

In addition to the exceptional offer above, enjoy these guaranteed Ambassador benefits:
    Guaranteed room upgrades
    Extended 4pm checkout
IHG® Rewards Club Platinum Elite status
    Free flights on Spirit Airlines
A complimentary weekend night at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts and participating Kimpton and Regent hotels

No further information is provided on the email or website about the partnership with Spirit Airlines though. I sent IHG a message asking if they could share details about this prior to me signing up and will share any details if I hear back.

  14. Is the offer targeted? I didn’t get the email, and when i go to the link mentioned above, i don’t see any reference to the free night for 40,000 points or less
