General blog discussion….

It’s time for some enhancements. No, not those enhancements, real enhancements, and I’m looking for some feedback.

First of all, as you’ve probably noticed, there’s a new “Ask Lucky” feature, which you’ll find on the right side of the screen. It’s the perfect place to ask anything travel related that’s not discussed in one of the posts.

I had a couple more ideas, and I’d love some feedback on them. My favorite part about blogging is the interactive aspect of it, as I love hearing different thoughts and ideas from readers. That’s what both of these ideas are aimed at:

1. How about having an “editorial” or sorts from a reader once a week? You can already make comments, but I was thinking about a reader (ideally a non-blogger, just to make the perspective truly “fresh”) writing a post once a week. I’m not talking about a fancy 1,500 word essay with MLA citations or anything, but just some thoughts from readers regarding current events in the industry, travel tips, or overall travel philosophies, anywhere from a paragraph to a few paragraphs long. Heck, it could even be a post disagreeing with a post I’ve made that week or sometime in the past, whatever you’d like. It would be one post on the same day every week. “Open Mic Mondays,” maybe (thanks to Jacqueline for the name)?

2. This is more of an odd question, but I’ll go for it anyway. I see some other blogs (some with a higher readership, some with about the same, and some with a lower readership), giving away prizes from sponsored third party travel related companies every so often. If I actually made a dime from this blog I’d shell out some $$$ and buy prizes, but alas I don’t. I’d love to be able to have some “contests,” and I would be happy to “promote” the travel company, assuming I believe in their product, in exchange. I have a respectable readership (I could provide more detailed stats, should anyone be interested in “sponsoring” a prize or know of a company that might be interested). Basically I’m wondering in general terms what the best way to go about this would be, and more specifically if anyone or any company might be interested.

Those are just a couple of ideas. If you have any thoughts on these ideas or something else, feel free to post them in the comments section below or send me an email at [email protected]

As always, thanks for reading!

  1. Hi Ben,

I don’t have an opinion either way on item 1, but as far as item 2 is concerned, I think that the consistently great content of your blog, and the quality of your writing is sufficient to draw–and maintain–readers. I see no reason for you to have contests. Just my two cents.

  2. I’m with Despina, I like the way it is, i’m not sure about the purpose of the second idea. It’s fun to have contests, but I thought giving out prizes is a bit tacky? Anyway make sure you pick a REAL good sponsors coz you probably can’t bad mouth them in the future lol 🙂

  3. Having been a blogger for a number of years, I realize the pro’s and con’s of having guest writers. They fill a void when you are, say, on an airplane trotting the globe for a week, but since they are not in your voice, they are often disconnected from the rest of the content and my readers generally did not like them…

I had no problems giving out prizes from third parties, but only with full disclosure.
