British Airways (BA) is the largest airline in the UK, and the third largest in the world when measured by number of countries served. Millions of passengers pass through BA’s hubs in London every year, and the airline offers a huge number of first and business class seats on their flights to every corner of the globe.

While British Airways is a distinctly British airline, their frequent flyer program is useful for travelers all over the world, even if they’re not flying to the UK. The British Airways frequent flyer program, British Airways Executive Club, brands their frequent flyer miles as Avios, and it’s very easy to earn Avios in the US through British Airways credit card offers.

Best British Airways Visa Signature® Card Offer of June 2019

The British Airways Visa Signature Card offered by Chase offers you the fastest way to earn a large number of Avios. After being approved for the card and meeting the minimum spend requirements, the Avios from the sign up bonus will be deposited directly into your British Airways Executive Club account.

In addition to the welcome bonus, the British Airways Visa Signature® Card offers other perks such as a companion ticket after spending $30,000+ per calendar year, as well as other perks such as no foreign transaction fees when using the card abroad, triple Avios on British Airways purchases, and other travel and purchase coverages.

After meeting the minimum spend requirements on the British Airways Visa Signature card you’ll have a large stash of Avios to work with. Here is the best British Airways Visa Signature® Card offer available today:

Up to 120,000 Bonus Avios

British Airways Visa Signature Card

Foreign Transaction Fee: $0
Annual Fee: $95

Why we like this card

British Airways has a distance based award chart which is extremely lucrative for shorthaul travel, as awards outside North America start at just 4,500 Avios one-way. Given that short flights are often disproportionately expensive when paying cash, I’ve found Avios to be invaluable.

Current Offer
Earn 4 Avios for every $1 spent on all purchases within your first year up to $30,000.

Card Details
• 4 Avios for every $1 spent on all purchases up to $30,000 in the first 12 months from account opening, you will then earn 3 Avios for every $1 spent on British Airways purchases and 1 Avios for every $1 spent on all other purchases.
• Every calendar year you make $30,000 in purchases on your British Airways Visa card, you'll earn a Travel Together Ticket good for two years.

How To Earn The Most Avios Points

You can earn a huge number of Avios by signing up for the Chase British Airways Signature Visa. Beyond that, there are a number of different card card offers from American Express and Chase that let you maximize your Avios earnings.

What may be surprising is that there are better cards to help you earn the most Avios than the British Airways Signature Visa. For example. the BA Visa offers just one Avios per dollar on non-BA purchases, other cards can earn:

  • 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines
  • 4X points at restaurants
  • 4X points at U.S. supermarkets
  • 3X points on travel expenses
  • 2x points at U.S. gas stations
  • 2X points on everything

This works because both American Express and Chase offer credit cards with flexible points that can be transferred to different airline frequent flyer programs. Amex calls these Membership Rewards points and Chase calls them Ultimate Rewards points — both can be used directly towards travel, or can be transferred to your British Airways Executive Club account at a 1:1 ratio. There are occasionally transfer bonuses to BA as well, which means you can earn as much as an extra 30% in BA Avios when making transfers. Marriott Bonvoy points also transfer to British Airways Executive Club, though the ratio is a bit reduced in comparison. In general, however, the flexibility of these points makes them much more valuable than ordinary air miles.

No one card offers all of these earnings rates, but the variety means it’s easy to choose a card that will allow you to earn the most miles on the purchases you’re already making. Again, these points can all be transferred directly to your British Airways Avios account.

British Airways Frequent Flyer Program Benefits

Those who fly British Airways regularly will find themselves rewarded with some additional perks! British Airways Executive Club offers elite benefits such as:

  1. Lounge access when flying partner airlines — BA Silvers and Golds are able to access partner lounges even when flying on domestic flights. Silvers get access to Admirals Clubs while Golds can access Admirals Clubs and Flagship Lounge (if available).
  2. First class ground services — BA Golds can utilize First Class services (check-in and lounges) which is unique as Star Alliance and SkyTeam do not offer this to those with an equivalent status. Golds also get expanded award space availability on British Air-operated flights.
  3. Expanded award space for top tier elites — For those who can qualify for Gold Guest List, one of the most unique benefits are the Gold Guest List Redemptions (aka “Jokers”). You can use one “Joker” to book up to five seats in any cabin/flight (round-trip) but there needs to be availability in certain fare classes. This can be great when you’re looking to use your Avios on routes that don’t have great availability (such as London-Singapore-Sydney).

While you don’t have to fly British Airways to earn and redeem Avios, there are still added perks for general members which are unique to BA, like:

  1. Household accounts — BA makes it easy to combine Avios from several accounts
  2. Free and easy transfers to another frequent flyer program — You can transfer BA and IB Avios back and forth as long as you meet a few requirements. This gives you more flexibility when it comes time to redeeming your Avios.
  3. Distance-based award chart — This makes it a great program for those who live near hub airports for oneworld or partner airlines. Last minute flights on Alaska Airlines or American Airlines domestically within the US can be a great value. For short routes where last minute tickets can be expensive, you can redeem as few as 7,500 Avios. You can get incredible value from you Avios that way.
  4. No close-in booking fees — BA doesn’t assess a close-in booking fee, so for those redeeming on domestic American and Alaska flights you’ll pay just the taxes!
  5. Premium cabins at low rates — It’s a great deal to fly around Asia in business or first class. Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines are both partners of British Airways. A business class flight from Hong Kong to Bangkok with Cathay Pacific in business class is just 16,500 Avios. Domestic flights within Japan start at just 6,000 Avios. There’s lots of opportunities here, as award space is generally quite good and the taxes are low.
  6. Upgrades on paid tickets — Premium economy tickets from the East Coast of the US to Europe can be upgraded to business for as little as 32,000 Avios. As British Airways often has attractive fares in premium economy, this can also yield tremendous value. You’ll also earn miles on these upgraded tickets, as you’re still traveling on a paid ticket!
  7. Travel Together Ticket — If you spend $30,000 on the British Airways Visa Signature® Card in a calendar year you earn a British Airways companion certificate, whereby you only have to pay the taxes, fees, and fuel surcharges for the second passenger on a British Airways award ticket.

British Airways Avios are so easy to come by are because of the number of transfer partners they have. Generally speaking the best credit card for earning British Airways Avios is one of the American Express Membership Rewards Cards (given the category bonuses and frequent transfer bonuses) and directly through the British Airways Visa Signature® Card if you want to actually fly on British Airways (for the companion certificate).
