Earlier I wrote about the great stackable Amex Offers for Hilton purchases, which can potentially earn you 3,500 bonus Amex points plus a $50 statement credit after spending $300 at a US Hilton property. When you combine that with Hilton’s current promotions for stays, that’s potentially like getting over half off a hotel stay.
However, it looks like that’s not the only great travel related Amex Offer that just became available, as pointed out by reader Janeway in the comments section.
There’s an offer for 10,000 bonus Amex Membership Rewards points when you spend $500+ on a Virgin Atlantic purchase by October 31, 2017. The promotion is valid exclusively for flights originating in the US, and you must book through Virgin Atlantic’s US website to qualify. Travel can be on a subsequent date, and all that matters is when you’re charged for the booking.
The promotion is targeted, so not all Amex accounts will be eligible. If you are eligible, be sure you register as soon as possible, since registration is limited. As luck would have it, for my account The Platinum Card® from American Express is eligible, and that card offers 5x Membership Rewards points on airfare purchased directly with airlines. This is my preferred card for airfare purchases anyway.
That means that a $500 Virgin Atlantic purchase would earn a total of 12,500 Membership Rewards points, which I value at ~$212 (~1.7 cents per point is my valuation). That’s a heck of a deal, especially when combined with how cheap international airfare is nowadays. For example, Virgin Atlantic has plenty of ~$560 fares from New York (and other US gateways) to London, which combine nicely with this promotion.
So while this won’t be for everyone, this is a heck of a deal if you were planning some transatlantic travel and were considering Virgin Atlantic.
Thought you recently slagged off the Virgin Atlantic Flyer Club since you said it had no value for you….
I don’t think you have to use the Virgin Atlantic card at all to get this 10k bonus, just make the purchase with your targeted Amex on a Virgin Atlantic flight.
@ Andy — You can fly Virgin Atlantic and credit to another program.
@ Lucky, which programs can I credit VA flights to?
Not targeted :/ Amex Platinum
Most flights out of Orlando are $600+ in economy to any of their 4 destinations they serve from there. (For anyone who is interested)
P.s. All Virgin Atlantic flights from Orlando are served by their 747-4!!!! (Up to 7 flights a day in the summer)
Do award flights count towards the promotion? Taxes for Upper Class US to LHR one-way are just above $500, so this would be a nice cushion to that blow.
Does Virgin Atlantic feature the same Premium Economy product on all their US routes?
I’m also thinking about booking a Premium Economy Award. Hopefully it works.
@ Steve – Yes it does. I booked a Virgin Atlantic award and the 10K points were credited a few days later.
