Since TATL tend to be redeyes, I’d probably lean towards on the way there so you can maximize your vacation time when you get there.

The flipside of that analysis is that if you have a rough flight on the way there, you have your entire vacation to look forward to, with all the excitement energy that brings. You can then enjoy your vacay while looking forward to your nice relaxing flight home instead of dreading a single pack of peanuts.
