I am exec platinum and booked on an American flight from SFO to JFK (3 class flight on a 32B plane). I was calling the Exec Plat desk to get some details on complementary upgrades and I was interested to hear that those that are currently in a revenue Business Class seat would not get a complimentary upgrade to First Class to accommodate more passengers to get upgraded to Business. Is that true?

Yep! You can use a systemwide to get into first, but no complimentary upgrades.
