The Chase Freedom® is one of my favorite no annual fee credit cards, as it offers 5x points in rotating quarterly categories, for up to $1,500 of spend per quarter. Most people use this as a cashback card, meaning the 5x points really translates into 5% cashback in these categories.
However, in conjunction with cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, points earned on this card can be converted into Ultimate Rewards points, and be transferred to the Ultimate Rewards airline and hotel partners. Since I value one Ultimate Rewards point at significantly more than one cent, that’s my preferred use of those points.
This quarter the card is offering 5x points on restaurants and movie theaters, which is a category I can pretty easily maximize.
However, it takes a bit of effort to figure out how much progress you’ve made towards maximizing the 5x points category, since it’s capped at $1,500 per quarter. This doesn’t show directly on the Chase Freedom website, or even on your account summary at chase.com.
So, how do you check how close you are to maxing out the $1,500 cap on the quarterly Chase Freedom bonus?
To access this, log into your Chase online account, and then on the right side click on the picture that has your Ultimate Rewards points balance.
Then on the next page select the Chase Freedom from the dropdown menu.
Then on the right side of the next page you should see a column that confirms whether or not your 5% cash back category is activated, and also the progress you’ve made, in the form of a progress bar.
The bar shows a scale of $0-75, referring to the cashback amount you’ve earned. If you have a card earning Ultimate Rewards points, this is basically a scale of zero Ultimate Rewards points to 7,500 Ultimate Rewards points, depending on whether you’ve spent $0 or $1,500.
The bar doesn’t show the exact number, though. For example, based on the below I’d estimate that I’ve earned somewhere around $60-70, of the $75 max (which converts into 6,000-7,000 Ultimate Rewards points).
If you do you want to see your exact progress, right click on the status bar and click on “Inspect.”
While this is a bit advanced for us non-techies, just look for the percentage in the code. For example, I’ve already completed 83.333% of the spend (thanks largely to a very big dinner I put on my card for which people reimbursed me in cash — suckers). 😉
As a reminder, once you’ve maxed out the 5x points category for this quarter, I recommend putting dining on one of the following cards, all of which offer bonus points on US dining:
