Hilton Extends Credit Card Free Night Rewards

20

Several co-branded Hilton Honors Amex cards offer a free weekend night certificate, either as an annual benefit (like on the Hilton Aspire Card), or as an incentive for spending money on a card (like on the Hilton Surpass Card). There’s some great news, as the expiration of some of these certificates has been extended yet again.

In this case, the expiration of Hilton free night certificates that were issued before May 1, 2020, is being extended. These were previously due to expire on August 31, 2021, but are now valid through January 3, 2022.

Just to summarize the expiration dates of outstanding Hilton free night certificates:

  • Hilton free night rewards issued before May 1, 2020, are valid through January 3, 2022
  • Hilton free night rewards issued between May 1 and December 31, 2020, are valid for 24 months
  • Hilton free night rewards issued between January 1 and December 31, 2021, are valid through December 31, 2022

While these are historically weekend free night certificates, those issued at least through the end of 2021 can be used for stays any day of the week, and not just weekends. That adds a huge amount of flexibility to these rewards.

See this post for everything you need to know about redeeming Hilton free weekend night certificates.

Bottom line

Hilton Honors has just extended the expiration date of some credit card free night certificates issued in 2020, which were supposed to expire at the end of August 2021. These have now been extended into early 2022.

In general Hilton Honors has done a fantastic job with extending benefits during the pandemic, and the free night certificates are a great example of that. I’ve loved the flexibility of being able to redeem them for stays any night of the week.

Will you benefit from Hilton’s latest free night certificate extension?

Awesome. Some lucky people will be able to stack three consecutive nights. Two for me if I hold.

  2. Bryan

Am I correct that the only way to find out what certificates you have available and their expiration dates is to call?

It's now Hyatt's turn to extend the free night certificates earned in 2021 from milestone awards. My certificate earned in mid-January 2021 expires in July 2021 ‬

  4. Neil

I got the email about this today. Funny because just yesterday afternoon I called to confirm the expiration date and was told August 31.

    @Bryan

You get an email for each certificate you get. I would just search your emails and you'll have all your certificates.

Ben - kudos to you for including the summary of all current expiration policies based on expiration dates, that is incredibly helpful. Between the wife and I, we have 6 nights to use.

EDIT: Second paragraph, end of last sentence. Date should be January 3, 2022.

As always, thanks for the content!

That is a great news - I was hesitant to rush the redemption of an expiring certificate this summer. Now there is more time.

Just used my 2 free Amex nights at the Cliffrose Springdale at the base of Zion!

@Bryan - I received an email about extending my reward certificate.

@TG93 - You were able to use free night certificate that were extended in today's update? I've tried twice today since I got the email and both times the agent was unable to complete the booking. They got error messages saying the booking was beyond the expiration date. One agent told me they confirmed with AMEX that the update hasn't taken place yet and another email will go out once it's bookable. Can anyone confirm...

I can confirm that I successfully booked nights with free night certificates from Hilton Amex credit cards. I actually did this last week on Thursday, May19th! I spoke with 2 different Hilton reps that day who both said the extension had been announced by Hilton Corporate that morning. I had two certificates from 2019 that had been extended to expire on August 31, 2021 as well as two certificates from 2020 which were also extended....

I was able to book 4 nights in a row with these certificates at the Grand Wailea in Maui.

So take note - the "Free Weekend Night Reward" no longer requires weekend stays. They are currently good for any day of the week according to the Hilton reps.

Correction: I booked my 4 nights on Thursday, May 20th.

  14. TG93

@Esteban - I booked them last month and used them about a week ago. I had no issue securing a reservation when calling in. Total call literally took 5 min and reservations showed up in the Hilton App.

I called in to use my certs, but they haven't updated the expiration date yet in the system, so I was unable to book anything. They then said to call again in a couple days.

Hilton is good but their points are worthless.

I called in 3 times today and still can't use my certificate beyond the original August 31 expiration date. The rep and supervisor both have heard nothing about a memo extending the date to January 3rd and they keep trying to transfer me to AMEX which is ridiculous. I wish a blogger would actually post a link to a Hilton announcement about the extension. I don't think they are going to extend it based on me saying "Lucky said they were extended!"

Opened a new Aspire card a couple of weeks ago and I'm waiting for the certificate.

Am I right that it will be valid any day of the week? Realize the post says any given thru 2021 will be, but seems like a huge boost for a new card!

I tried to book a 8/21 expiring cert for a 12/21 trip yesterday 5/27/21. Diamond Line agent knew about the extension, but system hadn’t updated and she was not able to push through an update. So will need to call back in a few days. Nice to have them extended for end of year travel.

Just an update on this. After 5 failed attempts over the last few days, I was finally successful this afternoon in booking two free weekend rewards (which were previously supposed to expire 8/31/21) at the Conrad Rangali Island in the Maldives for December. But it wasn't simple. It took about 45 minutes and I got transferred to various departments. In the end they had to be manually extended. The expiration date still said 8/31 in...

So now we know it's possible, at least as of this afternoon.
