In the interest of full disclosure, OMAAT earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers (terms apply) that we have found for each card. Hilton Honors offers among the best return on hotel spend of any loyalty program, given that they’ve been offering nonstop promotions lately. At the moment Hilton has an even further promotion for those who book a Hilton stay of at least two nights and pay with The Platinum Card® from American Express.

Keep in mind that the Amex Platinum Card already offers free Hilton Honors Gold status, which I consider to be an awesome perk of the card. The card also offers SPG Gold status, and by connection, Marriott Rewards Gold status.

The basic details of this promotion are as follows:

  • Valid for stays between May 7 and August 7, 2017
  • This bonus can only be earned once
  • Registration is required prior to an eligible stay
  • A minimum of a consecutive two night stay is required, and all hotels globally are participating, except Hampton by Hilton properties in China
  • Bonus points should post within six to eight weeks
  • Valid for both The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum® Card from American Express (US versions only)
  • The terms suggest that this is only valid for those who have enrolled in complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status through the Amex Platinum Card (I’m not sure how closely that’s actually enforced)

This promotion can be combined with Hilton’s current global promotion, which offers double points for all stays globally, or triple points if you’re a Diamond member.

Furthermore, you can earn 500 bonus points per booking made with the Hilton app through the end of 2017.

So the best strategy here is to use the Amex Platinum Card for the cheapest two night stay you make during the promotion period. That’s because you’re earning 7,500 bonus points, which I value at ~$30. However, you’re also forgoing a return on spend, since the card offers just one Membership Rewards point per dollar spent on Hilton hotel stays, a return I value at ~1.7%.

Meanwhile a card like the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card offers 12x Hilton Honors points per dollar spent, which I value at a return of ~4.8%. In other words, at roughly $1,000 of spend you’d breakeven in terms of the credit card return you’re getting, when comparing the 12x Hilton Honors points to the 1x Membership Rewards points plus 7,500 bonus points.

Do you plan on taking advantage of this Amex Platinum Card bonus for Hilton stays?

  1. There is no connection between SPG and Marriot when you have SPG gold through Amex Platinum. I could not match because the status with SPG was not earned in the normal way.

  2. I tried to sign up but it says i am not eligible. I have been diamond for a while so i never signed up for gold through AMEX. i went back and signed up for gold and will see if it takes later.

  3. @Morten – Yes it does. My Marriott account automatically matched to Gold the day after I was given SPG Gold through my Platinum card.

  4. @Morten that’s definitely not true. you just have to link your accounts online. sounds like you requested a status match.

  5. @Morten – you need to link your SPG Gold and Marriott / Ritz Carlton accounts via SPG’s or Marriott’s site. Try again.

  6. This is a repeat offer, and if it works like the last time it was offered (Q4 2016), then one will earn the bonus points by paying with ANY AMEX card and not just the Plat or Biz Plat. Below, I show it as a line item in the points that I earned last October after a paid stay at Hilton FLL:

    2016 HH3 DOUBLE POINTS OFFER: 12058
    2016 HH3 MOBILE APP OFFER: 12058

50% BONUS ON BASE POINTS: 6029
    DIAMOND VIP BONUS – 50% 2016: 6029

I paid with the AMEX Surpass and I suggest you do too this tie around (or with no-fee HH AMEX card that’s what you have)…You’ll still earn the bonus from this offer, in addition to earning the large bonus for on-property spending on the co-brand cards, thereby avoiding the “opportunity cost”.

  7. @DCS

Thanks for the DP. I was initially thinking if I could split payment to avoid opportunity cost. But it appears you dont even need to do that. Just put everything to HH Surpass.

Do you know if you need to get the GOLD status through the link above ? I already have Gold since quite some time ago with HH Surpass etc, so not sure if need to re-register or even possible to do so

  8. @Capybara — You need to activate the Gold status that comes with the AMEX Plat or Biz Plat. Getting the Gold status by other means would not qualify for this offer. I believe that enrolling one’s Gold status is a one-time thing. I enrolled back when the Gold status first became a perk and I just checked today (under “Benefits”) and was shown as “enrolled”.

  9. Says I am not eligible either. My Gold status is hard earned and not through any status match or Amex plat.

  10. Don’t seem to be able to get if with an Australian address- if I’m wrong pls let me know, if I’m right is there a way the posts can indicate US only, etc

  11. @Toby — In the post it says: “Valid for both The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Enhanced Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN (US versions only).”

  12. If I am already Diamond, and I then activate the Hilton Gold through my Amex card, will my status remain as Diamond? Is there any chance that Hilton gets this wrong and downgrades me to Gold?
