Heathrow Reminds Us Why We Love Airports

Heathrow Reminds Us Why We Love Airports

12

That’s something I never thought I’d say, given that Heathrow Airport is probably my least favorite in the world. 😉

However, Heathrow Airport is celebrating their 70th anniversary, so they’ve launched their first television advertisement to celebrate:

For 70 years we have been the first step on your journeys into the world, and the warm welcome home when you return. To mark this momentous occasion, we have launched our first ever television advert, ‘First Flight’. Explore the airport through the eyes of a child venturing on their first journey, and rediscover the magic of flight.

And it’s actually brilliant. As much as I love great first class products, ultimately what draws me to flying is my love of airports and airplanes.

Airports are global melting pots, and it’s amazing to think how when you’re at an airport there will be people traveling to every corner of the globe for all kinds of reasons within close proximity of you. There’s nothing quite like watching people anxiously wait for loved ones in the arrivals hall. Sometimes there’s one person waiting, and sometimes there are a dozen people waiting, with signs, balloons, etc. The reaction when people see loved ones for the first time in a while always puts a smile on my face.

Even after having flown over four million miles, flying is still a miracle to me. Every takeoff and every landing. With every sunset I gaze out the window in amazement.

Sunset-Clouds

Anyway, all of that is why Heathrow Airport’s advertisement is so great. You see the airport through the perspective of a first time flyer, and then realize that even after having flown a ton, many of us still have the same amazement. Well, at least that’s the case for me.

Here’s the video:

Anyone love this ad as much as I do?

Although the Brits do not have the best airports and airlines, I do admit that they make fantastic adverts.

I despise Heathrow, cannot recall any good experience, I avoid it as much as possible.

Awwww, that was a very sweet video.

Although one rarely sees the words "love" and "Heathrow" in the same sentence, unless it's something like "I'd love to watch giant bulldozers raze Heathrow to the ground".

LOVE! It includes United 900 taking off for SFO!

Incredible. My 20-month old daughter has already traveled quite a bit, and while she is starting to "get it" and seems to share her daddy's love of airports and airplanes, I can't wait until she's of the age in this ad to really be blown away by the whole experience of it.

    Thanks for sharing Ben!

How the heck did she get to walk through the security checkpoint with her jacket, hat, and GOGGLES!!!?
Agreed, great ad. Something else that might interest readers is the release of "Living in the Age of Aviation". It's a documentary on how far we've come with aviation advancements in the last century or so and how fast things have progressed. It looks awesome and is narrated by Harrison Ford, himself a pilot...and I'm not just talking about the Millennium Falcon

    I love this ad!
    Thanks for sharing it, Ben.

I probably don't fly nearly as often as most of your other readers, but I always plan my family's trips very carefully for 2 reasons 1) maximize fun 2) avoid headaches. I know so many people who hate flying. I don't want that to happen to me and I certainly don't want it for my daughter (or my wife for that matter). Perks like expedited...

I know so many people who hate flying. I don't want that to happen to me and I certainly don't want it for my daughter (or my wife for that matter). Perks like expedited security, lounge access, early boarding, and having a nice seat and attentive service on the plane can all be important parts of the experience, but not nearly as impactful as the thrill of the miracle that is flight!

Terrific ad! (Plus, my daughter has the ladybug version of that rolling suitcase...)
