United’s Premium Boeing 787s With New Cabins: Which Routes Do They Fly?

25

We recently saw United Airlines introduce its long awaited new Boeing 787-9s, featuring all-new cabins, which are being branded as United Elevate. This represents the evolution of the carrier’s long haul experience, including all-new Polaris business class seats.

Of course one common question is which routes actually feature these new planes. So in this post, I’d like to go over that — which planes have the new cabins, and which routes do they fly? The airline has just revealed the next routes that will be served by these planes (as flagged by Zach Griff), so let’s cover all the details.

Basics of United’s new 222-seat Boeing 787-9s

Prior to 2026, United already had over 80 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in its fleet, split between the 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 variants. However, United is now taking delivery of another 71 Boeing 787-9s, which recently started to be delivered (in addition to 56 Boeing 787-10s, which will be delivered as of 2028).

What’s exciting about these planes is that they feature an all-new passenger experience, and are in an ultra premium configuration. The planes feature just 222 seats, compared to the 257 seats you’ll find on all the previous 787-9s.

Seat map for 222 seat United Boeing 787-9

Specifically, these planes feature:

  • 64 Polaris business class seats, spread across 16 rows, in a 1-2-1 configuration; eight of those are Polaris Studio seats, which are the front row “business class plus” product
  • 35 Premium Plus premium economy seats, spread across five rows, in a 2-3-2 configuration
  • 123 economy seats, spread across 15 rows, in a 3-3-3 configuration; 39 of those are Economy Plus extra legroom seats

United Elevate Boeing 787-9 routes & flights

If you want to actually fly a United Boeing 787-9 with the new United Elevate interiors, what are your best odds of getting on one of these? The good news is that they’re consistently scheduled on certain routes.

As it currently stands, United has four of these 787s in its fleet, and the planes have the registration codes N21102, N51104, N61101, and N61103. For what it’s worth, United plans to have 33 of these jets by 2028, so the airline is taking delivery of an average of around one of these per month.

When you go to book a ticket, the best way to tell if a flight is operated by the new plane is whether you see “Polaris Studio available” listed under the United Polaris fare options (assuming those seats are for sale). Otherwise there are no obvious indicators, other than looking at the seat map.

Listing for United Elevate Boeing 787-9s

Currently, the United Elevate 787-9s are based in San Francisco (SFO), operating the following international flights, daily:

  • UA1/2 to & from Singapore Changi (SIN)
  • UA901/900 to & from London Heathrow (LHR)

Beyond that, as more planes are delivered, we can expect these Dreamliners to add the following additional flights in the coming months:

  • As of May 21, 2026, UA930/939 to & from London Heathrow (LHR) — this is a second daily flight
  • As of August 1, 2026, UA29/28 to & from Singapore (SIN) — this is a second daily flight
  • As of September 1, 2026, UA948/949 to & from London Heathrow (LHR) — this is a third daily flight
  • As of September 1, 2026, UA44/45 to & from Zurich (ZRH)

In other words, by September 2026, all daily flights from San Francisco to London, Singapore, and Zurich, will feature the new cabins, so that’s pretty straightforward. On top of that, United sometimes flies these new planes from San Francisco to to Houston (IAH) for crew familiarization, but that’s not terribly consistent.

Let me emphasize that schedules are always subject to change (especially when Boeing delivery delays are a potential factor), and the above is just how things currently stand.

United is basing its new Boeing 787s out of SFO

Bottom line

In recent months, we’ve seen United start to take delivery of its brand new Boeing 787-9s, featuring a more premium layout, plus new cabins. These are exciting planes for passengers, as they feature a much improved onboard experience. They’re also great in terms of upgrade and award availability, given the number of premium seats.

If you want to fly United’s new 787s, you’ll find them based out of San Francisco, currently flying to London and Singapore. Between now and September 1, we’ll see all daily flights in those markets get the cabins, in addition to the route to Zurich.

What do you make of United’s new Boeing 787-9s, and the routes they’re flying?

Hi Lucky, do you have a similar update on the status of the American Airlimes 78P? I haven’t been able to find anything definitive since the initial flights last year. Also wondering how the 77W retrofit timeline is coming along. Thanks!

I'm pleasantly surprised to find United's chosen route number for Singapore is UA01 (return UA02). Number 001 is usually an airlines most 'prestigious' route, and typically is assigned to a London or New York service. Nice to see a change from London and New York.

    1. Mike Guest

It’s been that way for years lol

Makes absolutely no difference how nice the United plane is. It’ll be the same crews, food, beverages and subpar US3 airline service standards regardless. Why would any passenger in ANY cabin fly UA over Singapore Airlines?

Your view of the improvements United has made across the board are uninformed and biased. You also degrade the many fine men and women who work hard to deliver a quality customer experience.

Also many of us choose to support US companies out of loyalty as proud US citizens.

Your comments are unjustified and disgraceful.

I think the most interesting item is the third route for this plane is SFO-ZRH. ZRH definitely punches above its weight given the size of the population, but still fascinating. Not Tokyo? Not Shanghai, Not Sydney, Not Hong Kong?

Hello hello!! What about Sydney and Melbourne?! These are some of UA longest routes! Come on UA

While we're at it, Yiannis, why not to ATH?!

Definitely snazzier than the BA Club Suite cabins - however, I would expect inconsistent service levels and poorer quality food which is typical of US Carriers.

You would be correct as I flew the SFO - IAH route and the food and service were horrible. You would think that the FA's would have acted better. Also, WiFi was down on the flight 2 weeks after opening

Vinod, I have too many hours to count flying the BA, A350 J seat. I’m still here to talk about it too …. :-)

    UA is doing everything right.

AA is just stuck in the past (Dallas regional soccer moms and dads - plus frats) mentality. There is nothing hip and cool about Dallas, and it shows in the airline. If AA were run from NYC, you'd see a different airline....perhaps it's time to take their HQ back there.

Atlanta has a cool-ish vibe, and DL pulls from NYC. Chicago is awesome and has a global reputation and...

DL - well, the fall from the top is hard...better than AA, but falling for sure. No one EVER stays on top, and that is the reality in this world.

DL not reliable for those who travel for business. After seeing what happened this week not sure how any self respecting corp travel manager can trust them.

For those who live in the basement, can’t get a job, and post 10k words a day praising DL across 10 travel blogs - it’s just peachy.

Wow! Not one of Ben’s basement dwellers took the bait. Shocking.

Well now, even I’m impressed by the video.

I trust that you will be looking into booking your review flight as soon as possible Ben?

    1. Cbchicago Guest

Oh Aero you know United booking is not Ben’s cup of tea.

    2. AeroB13a Guest

That is such a pity cbchicago, I do like his flight reviews too.

    They actually fly?

I thought they were currently hangar queens.

  13. Andy Guest

You can add that it will fly SFO-SYD from December

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Andy -- Thanks! Best I can tell, that hasn't actually been loaded into the system yet, though?

    2. Andy Guest

Yep I can't see them in the system yet but they have publicly announced it - I don't think they have an exact date in December announced.
