One of the valuable perks of Marriott Bonvoy elite status is being able to select Choice Benefits. The selection period for 2021 is coming to an end this Friday, so if you’re eligible you’ll want to make your decision ASAP. Let’s recap everything you need to know about the program.

What are Marriott Choice Benefits?

In addition to the standard published program benefits that apply with every stay, Marriott Bonvoy elite members are able to select additional perks for passing certain milestones.

Elite members — in this case Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador members — can select Choice Benefits when they pass 50 and 75 elite qualifying nights in a calendar year.

Even elite nights not earned through stays qualify towards these thresholds. This includes:

As a Titanium member with the above two credit cards, that meant I started 2021 with 68 elite nights in my Bonvoy account, without having completed a single stay.

Marriott’s 50 night Platinum Choice Benefits

With Marriott Choice Benefits, Bonvoy members who pass 50 elite qualifying nights in a year can choose from the following rewards:

  • Five Suite Night Awards
  • Five Elite Night Credits
  • The ability to gift Silver Elite status
  • 40% off a hotel bed
  • A $100 charitable donation

Marriott’s 75 night Titanium Choice Benefits

Then Marriott Bonvoy members who pass 75 elite qualifying nights in a year can choose from the following rewards:

  • Five Suite Night Awards
  • Five Elite Night Credits
  • A free night award (valid at a hotel costing up to 40,000 points)
  • The ability to gift Gold Elite status
  • 40% off a hotel bed
  • A $100 charitable donation

How to select your Marriott Choice Benefits

Marriott Bonvoy typically emails members to prompt them to select Choice Benefits. In addition to that, you can follow this link, and if you’re eligible to select Choice Benefits, you’ll immediately see the options. Note that:

  • Once you select your rewards you can’t change them
  • You need to make your selection by Friday, January 7, 2022
  • It can sometimes make sense to wait to make your selection if you don’t have an immediate use for it, since you might change your mind on what makes more sense over time (that’s not the case right now, as this is your last chance to make a selection for 2021)

Selecting my Marriott Choice Benefits

I’m a Marriott Bonvoy Titanium member, and I finished 2021 with 96 elite nights (while I was close to the 100 elite nights needed for Ambassador status, I was far from the spending requirement).

For some context, I have historically almost always selected suite night awards as my Choice Benefits, since they can in theory unlock the most value. I say “in theory,” because I have only used two of the 10 suite night awards from 2020 (fortunately they’ve been extended by six months, through June 30, 2022).

In the first half of 2021 I selected five suite night awards for my 2021 Platinum Choice Benefits selection, since at the time I had a stay in early 2022 I wanted to use suite night awards for (go figure that not only has that stay been canceled, but my old suite night awards have also been extended). So up until now I’ve had 13 suite night awards, with the ability to still choose my Titanium Choice Benefits selection.

With the deadline coming up, I made my final 2021 selection just now, and chose the five suite night awards. I have fairly good luck using suite night awards outside the United States (and I generally avoid Marriotts in the United States anyway), it’s just that I don’t actually stay at Marriotts all that often.

Just to share a bit more on why the other options don’t appeal to me:

  • There’s no value in adding five elite nights to my total for 2021, since I already requalified for Titanium status
  • Gifting Silver Elite or Gold Elite isn’t worth much, as the status doesn’t offer many benefits
  • While a donation is a nice thing to do, realistically I value some of the other options at more than $100, so that wouldn’t be a good way to maximize value
  • Selecting a free night award worth up to 40,000 points could be a solid option, especially if you don’t otherwise get value out of the suite night awards; however, historically I’ve managed to get good value out of suite night awards
I used suite night awards for an upgrade to a two bedroom suite last year

Bottom line

Choice Benefits is one of the nice perks offered to Marriott Bonvoy Platinum and Titanium members. Marriott Bonvoy made it easy for people to earn elite nights in 2021 thanks to credit cards and the 50% bonus elite nights, so many members may have the choice of these benefits even without a lot of stays.

We’re a couple of days from the deadline for selecting 2021 Marriott Choice Benefits, so you’ll want to make your final choice now. I (maybe stupidly?) selected more suite night awards, so I guess I better start thinking of ways to use these!

What Marriott Choice Benefits have you selected for 2021, assuming you’re eligible?

Just got back from a trip to Germany and was able to use nearly a dozen SNA's. Each property we stayed at the request was granted exactly five days before our stay, and we also were granted the highest room category requested. That will probably never happen again!

Marriott offered additional elite nights for having Marriott credit cards last year....are they doing that again? I'm at 30 night for both of my credit cards instead of 45 like last year...

    1. Eskimo Guest

Not that it matters, but last year was never 45. It's 43, 55, 68 or 80.
And it wasn't for having Marriott cards, it was for having some status in Bonvoy.

As someone who actually put in nights, I hope they don't. But the rest of the first-time-platinum people I know wants it again. Maybe everyone except the platinum and above pre Covid is happy.

      Bonvoy gets more happy elite.
New elites get a shiny new status but would never fully understand the pre Covid amenities, so no real loss here if you never tasted it.
Property sees more elite and make it easier to hide behind Covid and cut amenities.
The only people here that gets affected are the pre Covid elites.

With all the platinum holders, I doubt things will return before 2023.
To the point that I might stop at 50 nights or less this year then pick up the pace early 2023.

Why not qualify for 75 nights every year with Marriott Bonvoy
That’s what I try to do!
      Love my Titanium Elite status!

Any info on when we whether and when we will be able to use the cert plus points up to a 50k redemption?

40K is limited. I get 3 per year at 35k as it is.

  4. CS Guest

I just selected the 40% off for a bed as my Choice Benefit - thinking either a St. Regis bed or a Ritz-Carlton bed. I realize that the 40% discount is off of full retail price. With that being said, has anyone chosen this benefit and if so, were there any issues with delivery, condition of bed once received, or any other things I need to look out for?

    1. Eskimo Guest

You probably will be the first reader who selected the bed.

Did they warn you more than 2 times before selecting this benefit?

    2. CS Guest

Well, I did have to click at least 2 confirmations when making my final selection. LOL.

    3. Lukas Guest

About a month ago I took delivery of the Westin Heavenly bed (only 25% off as I selected elite nights as my benefit) and everything went smoothly. I'm supposed to get 10,000 Marriott points for the order, so I'm waiting on that.

    4. CS Guest

@Lukas - great to hear. Thanks!!

Hey Ben, I’m curious what spending level you ended up at with Marriott, and if you would ever consider reaching 20k for ambassador status?

    1. Ben Schlappig OMAAT

@ Jimmy’s Travel Report -- I was at around $8-9K, I think. I have qualified for Ambassador in the past with the standard spending requirement. There's no way I'd do so in the future, though. Marriott properties just let me down too often to spend so much money with the group.

    @Lucky,

Hope you can help. I had a stay at a hotel where I checked out on December 27, 2021 for 6 nights which has not posted to my Marriott Bonvoy Account. All stays since then have, however. I spoke with the hotel manager and he says they processed the points transaction and elite nights on December 29, 2021 and he actually looked up my folio and spent a good 10 minutes on the phone...

I spoke with the hotel manager and he says they processed the points transaction and elite nights on December 29, 2021 and he actually looked up my folio and spent a good 10 minutes on the phone with me thus I am inclined to believe what he has stated. These 6 nights will exactly qualify me for Titanium Status and a choice benefit of which I would like to choose the free night. However, I can't file a claim with Marriott until after January 7th since they require 10 business days after checkout. Since the Titanium elite choice benefit has to be chosen by January 7, 2022 and I likely will not have this issue resolved by then, how would I go about selecting the choice benefit I actually would like since through no fault of my own Marriott has bungled the process of posting the stay which would qualify?

    1. Alex Guest

Hi. I bet many others are in the same boat when checking out 12/30 or 12/31. I bet your nights will post in the coming week and you’ll be emailed the Titanium choices. Just need to give Corporate time to process all these transactions.

2021 is a weird year in which I haven't found much use for the suite night awards. That's because with most Bonvoy properties far from full capacity, as Titanium I get upgraded each time without having to make a request or use my suite night awards. I have 20 of them left. Since they will all expire by 6/20/22, I will try to use them in the next 6 months even though it won't make...

The only time these awards will be of value is when I am taking a family vacation and want to be assured 100% that I will get the upgrade - like the dreaded upcoming spring break family trip to Disney. I will certainly combining my free night certs and the suite night awards. So my advice for the 75-nighters is to take the free night.

Aren’t you still Ambassador with Marriott

  9. JJ Guest

If I have 70 nights and an platinum does it make sense to select the five elite night credits and get bumped up to Titanium?

    1. Eskimo Guest

Yes, because you will get to select another benefit at 75 nights, which includes the same selection or 40k night.

Would you see better recognition as Titanium, I don't think so as more people are within reach of Titanium than ever. I have already considered 2022 Titanium as the new Platinum.

    2. Alex_77W Guest

I would select 5 elite nights, get a Titanium, and chose 1 free night at the 75 night Titanium benefit. I am life time Titanium who also requisites every year. I find suite night awards useless even at Titanium level but I do find good use to free nights.

    3. Michael Guest

Any idea if the 5 elite night's count towards lifetime status?

    4. Jill Guest

      Absolutely worth it
      Especially over the SNA’s

    5. JJ Guest

Thanks Everyone. Great to have access informed travelers.

  10. Mike Guest

I have lifetime platinum status, but am being told I don’t have enough stays this year to qualify for the above benefits. Is this true, or do I need to dispute this?

    1. Tyler Guest

If you didn’t hit 50 nights, it likely is true.

For example, back in the brief post-SPG merger period when holding the Ritz card gave Marriott Platinum status, that card based status did not entitle the cardholder to the 50-night choice benefits unless they actually had 50 elite nights. I can see lifetime status working the same way.

    2. Eskimo Guest

      It's true.
You earn these by reaching the night milestones.

Consider you have lifetime, you probably takes these for granted as you normally would reach Platinum every year.

Will reach the 75 by end of year - so will have another choice - so I will go with the 40K point free night as others are. Marriott just doesn't have that many suites, and many that are - good be an inside corner with a bedroom area with no window.

Ben - I thought you were Lifetime Titanium. I know lots of you were playing some games to get it when LT Titanium was going away.

    1. Eskimo Guest

He is lifetime Titanium, he just doesn't brag about it too often. And 2021 makes it very easy for Titaniums to reach the milestones.

I also never had any success of applying SNA on 4+ nights stay. If you win it all the SNA is much better. So I always take the 40k, at least it doesn't go to waste.

    2. Jill Guest

      @Eskimo
No he’s not he decided not persuit when the great merger happened

  12. John Guest

    Select the 40k cert!

I have 16 suite night awards and can’t get hotels to let me use them. This is the first time I’ve really had this problem, as I have always selected suite nights for both.

Now I am selecting the 40k cert because suite nights have become useless.

    1. LovetoFly Member

Same. The only time I've had success has resulted in an "upgrade" that was worse than my original room. Worthless....

    2. Michael Guest

Some hotels seems to have stopped allowing SNA requests entirely.

    3. GEG_WA New Member

And if the free night is selected after 12/31/21, it's good through 12/31/23 because there's a glitch in Marriott's IT. (Who would have thought?)

  13. Time Traveler Guest

I never make a choice and the system always automatically adds the suite night awards. I even noticed they specifically stated that in the email I received the other day.

  14. Hassan Guest

Does anyone know if adding "5 Elite Night Credits to your 2021 total" also counts towards my lifetime total Bonvoy nights? I am on track to earning lifetime goal next year (about 30 nights away) and wondering if this can help.

For 2021, I'm at 54 nights so an additional 5 night credit at this point won't really do anything for me as the next tier is 75 nights.

    Thanks!

    1. Reno Joe Guest

      It does count.

But, after all of the posts and comments regarding the meaninglessness of tier status, why would anyone shoot for it? Does one want to be stiffed on tier benefits for life?

    2. Jill Guest

It’s not meaningless it’s way more useful than suite night awards being denied

    3. Eskimo Guest

      @Hassan

I see no reason for you to get the 5 night credit.
If you're 30 nights away from lifetime Platinum, you are likely to qualify for Platinum next year and reach 30 nights anyway.
If you're 30 nights away from lifetime Gold, or Silver. Both are useless, get the SNA.

    5. Eskimo Guest

      @Jill

If you stay 2-3 nights per year, spend $1000 per night (10% bonus that actually have meaning) just to move 2 rooms further from elevator (unpublished upgrade) and check out at 12:30pm (late checkout).

If you think the above is useful, then I stand corrected.
Even as a Gold, your benefit is 2pm checkout, and don't expect too much upgrade.

An example, a group of us had a meet up stay and we each booked a basic room at the same rate. Property was about 50% full. Titanium got a suite, Platinum got the executive floor (fake upgrade, suite refused lol), Gold got a larger room, no status got what he paid for. (no Silver for comparison but you should get the idea) Too bad Plat didn't try SNA, would be interesting on the outcome.

Also you don't have access to credit cards, maybe due to non US, bad credit score, too low income, etc.
Silver is easy to obtain, too easy.

Jill, asked you a great question about lifetime silver being useless

Also are you saying lifetime gold is useless
That’s what my friend has and he loves it!

    7. Eskimo Guest

      @Joe1293

Gold isn't useless. I think 2pm checkout is quite useful in many situations.
      Silver still is useless.

It ultimately comes down to the individual property and your own feelings. Just don't expect any treatment as Silver, anything special at that level is pure bonus. But if you're convince about the "upgrade" you got by moving 2 rooms further from the elevator makes you fell special, then enjoy your status.

Useful post and reminder as I have to pick my benefit.

Unrelated, can you do a post on traveling with a pet. Less focused on which hotels are pet friendly, but more on the non-sexy mechanical stuff, like flying with a pet, crossing borders, getting upgrades (for example United doesn't allow pets under the seat in Polaris).
