Shopping portals can be a great way to earn cash back for purchases you’d make anyway. While shopping portals offer bonuses for all kinds of retailers, sometimes they even offer bonuses for airlines and hotels. At the moment there’s a noteworthy deal, which will likely only be available today (though lately we seem to see this offer about once per week).
You can get 10% cash back for Marriott hotel stays booked through Ebates. Ebates simply redirects you to Marriott’s website, so you’d be eligible to earn points and receive elite benefits as usual. The cash back for eligible stays should post to your Ebates account within six weeks of your stay. Obviously, if you cancel any bookings you wouldn’t receive the reward.
As mentioned above, we’re now seeing this promotion from Ebates just about every week, so it’s not exactly rare, but it is worth being aware of if you’re booking hotel stays. Also note that we’re now sometimes seeing opportunities to earn 10x airline miles using shopping portals, so some may prefer that offer, assuming they value miles at more than a penny each.
If you’re not yet an Ebates member, you can receive an extra $10 after you make your first eligible purchase by signing up (and I’ll receive a payout as well after your successful first purchase).
I’m not sure how long this promotion is available (in the past it has typically only been available for a day), so you’ll want to book ASAP if you have any bookings to make. You can always make refundable bookings now and then cancel them later. As a point of comparison, the payout before this was just 2%.
When will Marriott/Ebates offer 10% cash back again? I have been checking everyday after the last one on April 2nd. I am waiting to book a trip for November. Hopefully they offer it again soon!!
@Jules,
Although I previously had issues with getting credit for a non-US, legacy SPG property back in December, I have been able to book US and non-US sites and get my cashback no problem this week.
None of my Marriott bookings outside the US are registering as cashback eligible. Only US bookings appear to work which is very annoying. Anybody else having this issue?
@Alex - considering you can’t ever buy AA miles for 1 cents each it would seem the AA 10x miles are a better option especially for such smaller transactions. When debating In the hundreds of dollars cash rebate I’m sure that argument gets easier to make for the cash.
However, with eBates linking to AMEX points instead of cash back, Amex 10x is so much better than AA 10x, IMO
Thank you for the information! Just made 80 bucks thanks to you!
Has anyone ever had any luck using a Corporate Code and getting a payout? I know ~sometimes~ you can get lucky with discount/promo codes on portals, but I have never tried hotels.
Thanks for the tip, Ben! I had just booked a stay at the Ritz Carlton last night that I was able to cancel and rebook using the E-Bates portal. Not only did I secure the 10% discount, but the price of the stay dropped by a small amount between last night and this morning, as well. Very profitable visit to your website this morning.
@Debit's still a racist, I see.
@Ben Skelton.
What online chat did you use? I can't find an online chat on the Ebates web site. I also have reservations made that are not acknowledged by the Shopping Trips list in Ebates.
Thanks.
I made two Aloft reservations in Munich this morning. They never registered in Ebates as cash back eligible because they were former Starwood properties, but you can chat online with their customer care team and get it resolved.
They were super easy to deal with, took like 5 minutes.
@ Mike. Makes sense I guess.
Also, any idea when Marriott reservations show up on the Ebates account? I just made one with Marriott and it is not in the upcoming reservations. I want to make certain I am doing this correctly, lol
@Stuart: "One thing I am confused at is that for Hilton it states Diamond members only get 1% back. Non-Members or standard seem to get 2.5% Anyone understand why this is? Seems odd."
Presumably, it is to offset the additional points that a Diamond will receive compared to non-Diamonds.
I never used this before and just signed up. It seems so easy as to be almost not real! But why not, I will give it a try.

@Bill
After you make the reservation with Marriott go to the "my account" section in the Ebates app or website. There you going to see your cashback history. You will see all of your Marriott purchases and attached to them will be your confirmation number for the reservation you made through the Ebates portal. That is how they track it. I know this because on a recent reservation I canceled and re-reserved and Ebates still had my old confirmation number not the new one. So I did not get credited for that stay. You have to make sure that Ebates has the correct Marriott confirmation number.
i did this twice in december when trying to reach 50 nights. it worked for the marriott property, but it never posted for the spg property...
i didn't want to waste time pursuing the $8 back on the $80 rate, i didn't even stay in the room, just checked in and left to get the 50th night, so not sure if they would have honored it if pushing for it.
that said, i wouldn't count on this working at former spg properties.
Debit is still a clueless, one-note troll.
@Lucky, when will you be posting new trip reports?
Will this work with LNF?
When you make the Marriott reservation is it supposed to show upbon the ebates website right away only once the charge clears? I did not get an email or any confirmation at all thst ebates saw my reservation even though i have Marriott confirmation. I clicked the link on the ebates website and it took me to marriott.
So this should mean 10x MR for those with a linked account? If so, that's an incredible deal.
Chase has a 15% off Marriott offer that expires 2.22 (up to $60). I just bought a Marriott gift card at a Marriott where I am staying.
eBates in most cases offers better shopping perks vs. competitors. I should know. I'm set to get a BIG FAT CHECK in a few days. So happy for my e-Bates $ gUaP $ ! :-)
Top cashback is offering 10% back on IHG and choice hotels now, too:
https://www.topcashback.com/ref/member1116435452315
Ebates is bogus. I am also waiting for a check that they keep saying is "in the mail".
Beware of ebates - I am still waiting for a check from them after 5 months!
Thanks Lucky...
I rebooked a reservation in China in early March.
@Rod yes will not work in EU. already tried that before
Does this only apply to US residents?
Which is better?
10x AA miles or 10% cash back?
8% back on topcashback, includes Starwood
if you search starwood, no results. Search Marriott and shows 6 different brands, none of which are starwood brands
Do I know when I book that I am booking an eligible rate? I have no desire at all to book through ebates and then find out afterwards that I do not get my 12%.
If I cannot use the AAA rate, then this is no bonus at all.
@paul I use this every time and always get cash back.
Will this work on St Regis? If so, I’m sold.
Re SPG properties -- I'd like this to work, but I have my doubts -- b/c even if you start on marriott.com, the domain that you actually book on for SPG properties is starwoodhotels.com -- and eBates specifically lists SPG as a 0% partner (just search "starwood" in the search box). Did anyone successfully receive starwood cash back when this promo ran in Oct?
Thanks for the heads up! That's an extra $80 bucks in my pocket.
And yes it does work on AAA and Senior!
Question on Ebates: does it make a difference if I sign up with an address from Europe? In other words, is this U.S. exclusive?
@V - Sounds like a plan. Thanks for the info!
@Andrew It was in the terms included with the email I got from Ebates, maybe there’s a difference from the website, so it may be a matter of screenshotting to make the case in the event it doesn’t include SPG.
@V - where do you see that?
I see the terms as follows:
"Cash Back Terms
Cash Back will be added to your Ebates account within six weeks after travel has been completed.
Exclusions: Cash Back is available only on completed hotel stay. Cash Back is not available on airfare, car rentals, vacation packages, gift cards, rooms offered at specially negotiated rates, where the customer is required to be affiliated with or employed by...

Exclusions: Cash Back is available only on completed hotel stay. Cash Back is not available on airfare, car rentals, vacation packages, gift cards, rooms offered at specially negotiated rates, where the customer is required to be affiliated with or employed by a particular company or organization to receive the special rate (e.g., government rate or the Marriott employee rate) and rooms that are booked and paid for using Marriott Rewards Points. Cash Back is not available at the following brands: ExecuStay, Ritz Carlton, Edition, BVLGARI, Grand Residences; and at the following properties: The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Autograph Collection, Riyadh Marriott, Saudi Arabia, Aspen Wye River Conference Center (Maryland), The Marriott Ranch Bed and Breakfast (Virginia), AC Hotel Lisboa, AC Hotel Carlton Madrid, AC Hotel Som, AC Hotel Nuevo Portil Golf."
There are exclusions, for sure. But not SPG.
Cash back on the total $ including taxes, resort/service fees, seaplane (like Maldives), or only the cost of the room?
Prepaid SPG rate is eligible?
@Lucky @Mark It appears that the terms exclude SPG properties booked via Marriott.com?
“Cashback is currently not available on Starwood properties booked through Marriott.com.”
Are there still any Amex offers available that might stack with this?
Would it work on AAA or Senior Rates? I realize it would not work on a corporate rate.
Does it work on points stays? I have one of those I could always cancel and rebook,
@ Bob -- Nope, has to be a paid stay.
This is an awesome deal. Thanks Lucky!
IHG never credits to through eBates. I've always had success with Hilton and Marriott though.
Corp rate not included looks like :
Cash Back is not available on airfare, car rentals, vacation packages, gift cards, rooms offered at specially negotiated rates, where the customer is required to be affiliated with or employed by a particular company or organization to receive the special rate
@mark, cashback is cash out to your preferred pay out method (PayPal or check) every 3 months if your cashback balance is >$5 (I think?). Make sure to unblock ad block if you have that when you make your purchase through Ebates.
For hotel stays, my Hilton stays cashback have yet to be credited but it does say: "Cash Back will be added to your Ebates account within 3 months after travel has been completed." and it hasn't been 3 months yet.
ok great timing! I have like 6 stays to book, but how does Ebates work? Will the cash back be available on my ebates account- and how do you actually get that back?!
Will it work for SPG properties, such as Sheraton/Westin?
@ Mike -- Yep, it should work!
