Emirates Skywards has just launched a creative promotion. I love when loyalty programs think outside the box, and this is the perfect example of that. Now, whether people actually want to visit Dubai right now is a different question…
Emirates’ creative “mile-a-minute” promotion details
Thanks to a limited time promotion, Emirates is offering Skywards members one mile for every minute they spend in Dubai:
- This is valid for tickets booked between October 21 and November 5, 2026
- This is valid for travel between October 21 and December 13, 2026
- All Skywards members are eligible, but registration is required
- The ticket must originate outside the UAE, with the Dubai stay lasting between 24 hours and 30 days
- The ticket must book a ticket directly through Emirates or flydubai, and must be for roundtrip travel
- The ticket must be eligible to earn Skywards miles, meaning that award tickets don’t qualify
- The calculated length of stay is based on the ticketed itinerary — you can either have an extended stopover in Dubai (like flying New York to Dubai to Delhi), or you can make Dubai your destination (like flying New York to Dubai to New York)

While Emirates is an independently profitable airline, there’s no denying that a major incentive for the carrier is also to build up the economy of Dubai, and that largely comes in the form of encouraging people to visit. Keep in mind that the carrier also has the “My Emirates Pass” concept, where your Emirates boarding pass can unlock savings at retailers throughout the UAE.
Of course let me caution that I’m just sharing the promo here, and not making a call as to whether anyone should visit the UAE. As a reminder, the US Department of State just issued a Level 3 travel advisory for the UAE, encouraging people to reconsider travel there.
The major limitation with this Emirates promotion
There’s one major catch with this offer (well, aside from general willingness of people to travel to the UAE). Earning one Skywards mile per minute is quite a generous mileage earning rate. That’s 1,440 miles per day, 10,080 miles per week, or 43,200 miles per month.
So that brings us to the catch — each Skywards member is capped at earning 7,200 bonus miles with this promotion. You’d earn that after spending exactly five days in Dubai. So this promotion creates a nice incentive to plan a stopover there, though a long visit won’t earn you much incrementally.

Bottom line
Emirates Skywards has launched a pretty creative promotion for visiting Dubai. You can earn one bonus Skywards mile for every minute you spend in Dubai. The major catch is that you have to stay for at least 24 hours, and you’re capped at earning 7,200 bonus miles, which you’d reach after five days.
Also, the timing of this offer comes just shortly after the US has issued an elevated travel warning for the UAE, so everyone can make of this what they’d like. I’m certainly not going to the UAE anytime soon!
What do you make of Emirates’ “mile-a-minute” promotion?
Very creative promo but not lucrative at all :(
Was better in seconds:)
On the flipside, you have to spend a minute for a mile in the fiefdom of the UAE. Not sure it’s worth it.
Syria will give you 100 miles for every minute you spend in Syria . Afghanistan will give you 1,000,000 miles for every minute you spend in Afghanistan .
I think we’ve just discovered the next frontier in the mileage world…. A new way to lure customers to undesirable hot spots! Imagine the possibilities! Ooooo and then after they’ve risked their lives we can devalue the miles they received!
By "limited time promotion" they mean that literally...
The optics of this are really bad--it looks desperate. Not a great idea for a promotion.
Ben - In your opinion, are skyward miles more valuable than skypesos? Given the high fuel surcharges that Emirates levies to already exorbitant Skyward redemptions, I'd say they maybe a contender to dislodge Delta from its pesos throne!
saver level US-Europe in J is still good- anything through DXB has the egregious surcharges. obviously useful if you want a bucket list type flight in EK F with status via CC or otherwise
Business class availability on their fifth freedom routes to Europe is excellent right now.
Sign of the times for Emirates!
This article gives me so much joy. Goes down like Krug. This comes after a promotion where residence can earn commission from attracting tourists.
Hah, capping it at 7200.
EK style.
Lipstick on a goat.
People don't realize almost 30% of there fleet doesn't have direct aisle access in business class. It's worse than when we troll Tim about Delta's 767.
The cutting edge F is on a handful of planes for many years with no addition.
But see you in DXB, I'll be collecting my 7200 miles.
