Hello from Taiwan, as I just flew Starlux Airlines’ Airbus A350-900 first class on the 13-hour flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Taipei (TPE). I recently wrote about why and how I booked Starlux first class, as it’s the second to last first class product in the world I’ve yet to try (Air Côte d’Ivoire, I’ve now got my eyes on you!). It’s also the second most cash I’ve ever spent out of pocket on a flight. Bleh.
Look, I came into my Starlux first class flight with low expectations, given that the hard product looks more like a “business class plus” seat, and I wondered if this would actually be a competitive product, since Starlux’s first class commercial strategy makes little sense.
But you know what? I’ve gotta say, I walked away from the experience impressed, and this flight greatly exceeded my expectations. Is it quirky, and does the hard product leave something to be desired? Yes. But the ground experience is phenomenal, the inflight service was exceptional, and the food and amenities were pretty great.
Let me share some initial thoughts, and then soon I’ll have a full review.
In this post:
Starlux’s A350 first class seats are incredibly strange
Starlux’s A350 business class is excellent, as the airlines has the Collins Aerospace Elements seat, which I rank as being among the best business class seats in the world. But rather than having a fully separate first class cabin with a curtain, first class is instead just located in the first row, and on the surface, looks more like a “business class plus.”

Y’all know how skeptical I was of this product, but several elements exceeded my expectations.
In terms of spaciousness, I’d say the first class seat is probably comparable to British Airways’ 777 first class, so it’s not an amazing hard product, but it’s actually not uncompetitive either, in my opinion. The seat’s tech is excellent, from all the charging options you’d expect, to a huge 32″ 4K UHD.

The walls around the seat are also really so high that you don’t even realize the rest of the cabin is there. That might sound silly, but I was fully expecting to be bothered by light pollution and other things, but that didn’t at all end up being the case. You really feel like you have your own cocoon.
The other thing is that no one seems to actually ever book first class on Starlux, so I had the whole cabin to myself, meaning I could lounge in one seat, sleep in another seat, etc.

I was curious how the lavatory situation would work, since the forward lavatory is reserved for first class passengers, but I figured passengers would constantly be coming up to try and use it, given the lack of a curtain between the two classes of service.
Nope. I heard the crew clearly explain to business class passengers that lavatories are located behind the cabin. Only once did I see someone try to use the forward lavatory, and they were promptly directed to the rear lavatory. So that ended up being a non-issue.

Also, the business class service is performed from the galley behind the cabin, so there’s virtually no light or foot traffic in the forward galley. Speaking of cabin lighting, I feel like lighting in the entire cabin was adjusted based on where I was in the service, which was sort of funny. For example, cabin lights were turned off the second I finished my meal.
So yeah, in terms of hard product I’d say this is probably slightly below average, but it wasn’t as much of a disadvantage as I was expecting.
Starlux’s first class soft product is very competitive
I have to say, the Starlux first class soft product was really spectacular. I had two flight attendants, Birdy and Lori, exclusively taking care of me, and the service was flawless. Like, every time I’d be served something they’d both come out, and it was so perfectly orchestrated. They were personable, and had great attention to detail.
Starlux first class is unlike any other first class product I’ve flown in the sense that guests aren’t typically offered a menu onboard (though there is a very extensive drink list). You just make a selection from a variety of options before your flight, and then they cater that exactly to your preferences.
I know that might sound undesirable, but it worked really well, and the food quality was really good. I also appreciate that from a food waste perspective — that’s better than loading one of each option, only to have most of it go to waste.
I’ll have more details in my full review, but below are some pictures of my main meal…

When it comes to drinks, Bollinger La Grande Année 2015 was the champagne on offer, though I also really enjoyed the wine selection beyond that, including some options from Taiwan.

There were so many cute touches to the service, from a mini suitcase hard-shell overnight bag from FPM Milan, to a box of Aesop products and a face mask, to pajamas from Huntsman, to a Loro Piana blanket, to a diffuser placed next to the bed with turndown service.

Starlux’s first class ground experience is great
I think what Starlux really nails is the ground experience. After Air France, I’d argue that Starlux has the most consistently excellent first class ground experience of any airline in the world, in terms of the consistency with which you’re looked after.
I’ve already covered how Starlux first class passengers get access to PS LAX, the airport’s private terminal. That’s not even the only airport where Starlux sends first class passengers to a private terminal.

Then upon arrival, I was picked up at my gate and driven in a golf cart to the (very strange) first class lounge. By the way, Starlux might have the coolest first class luggage situation in the world. When your bag is checked, it’s literally placed inside a huge, hard-shelled case, which has all kinds of first class branding on it, and then it’s loaded separately, brought out first, etc.

As much as we (myself included) love to rave about the gimmicks of first class, like double beds and inflight showers, the truth is that an excellent ground experience is worth a lot. Ultimately premium travel is supposed to be about a seamless end-to-end experience, and that’s something Starlux nails.
Bottom line
I’m not suggesting Starlux has the world’s best first class. However, I came into my flight with very low expectations, and they were greatly exceeded in terms of the soft product. The hard product is definitely quirky and I wish it were a fully separate cabin, but it was better than expected in practice, as I almost didn’t realize there was a whole cabin behind me.
But the soft product, from the ground service, to the food, to the amenities, and in particular the flight attendants, were all very good.
I’m still processing everything, but I think all-in-all, this might just make it toward the bottom of my list of the world’s 10 best first class products… or at least would rank slightly behind that.
What’s your take on Starlux’s A350 first class?
@lucky, "a huge 32 inch TV" in first class reminded me of another review. Sorry, couldn't help myself :)
https://onemileatatime.com/insights/air-new-zealand-787-business-class/ :
"Speaking of the entertainment screen, it’s 11″. While there are some contexts in which that number might impress, inflight entertainment screens in long haul business class isn’t among them."
Perfect example of why judging a flight by its seat map misses the point. On paper, Starlux First Class barely looks like a step up from their already stellar Business Class. But throw in a private terminal, an empty cabin, and hyper-personalized service, and suddenly you’re in a different dimension. Is it worth the eye-watering price tag? Debatable. Although, give me a private terminal and enough champagne and I suspect my value calculations would become...

Completely agree and it's why we need more firsthand (non-sponsored) reviews of these products. Even though i'll likely never fly this product, it's fantastic to understand it better!
And the window was aligned! My biz class was a good flight FROM SEA a couple years ago because I snagged row5 (I think?) with AA aligned window. Also nice Biz lounge in Taiwan
How many first class products are left ? So even making the top 10 is not a big deal.
It seems like a glorified front row business class suite, something that is a little better in space and separation than United or American Airlines bulkhead row J class suites.
It's pretty elevated, when you compare PS to a Polaris or Flagship lounge. PS is even better than a generic F lounge.
Starlux first class seems like a great overall experience.
Other than the champagne, the very expensive whiskey and slightly upgraded bedding, how is this worth ot over business class. The food didnt look much better and since this is overnight dlight, cant see the justification of 2x cost over business class.
Ground experience + service look like the two main factors. People who don't bat an eye at an extra $5k will appreciate those items a lot.
Did you get any sense from the crew on how common it is to be the only passenger in F? I still can’t understand why the price is so much higher than business and therefore almost always empty. Intra Asia the premium for F is nuts.
One should not underestimate the value of a hassle free and relaxing on ground experience. As a frequent traveller, and one who does so mainly for work, products with good on ground experiences help to avoid the otherwise stressful experience that can arise after several days of back to back travel and general mental fatigue. On this front, AF, EK, AI and SQ are my favourite airlines who deliver a stress free experience on ground regardless of origin. On board, I value space, quiet and a comfortable bed. In flight food is never too memorable and generally not needed for me and neither do I consume alcohol or caffeine in flight, choosing instead to let the body hydrate and recover. Ultimately, First class for me is about space and an stress-free atmosphere. Everything else is a bonus. Therefore, the starlux product looks attractive despite the lacklustre food.
On a personal front, am I the only one who dislikes these hard shelled amenity kits that are simply difficult to take along?I just take the products, if they are worthwhile, in my personal amenity kit.
looks incredible, makes me wanna fly them to be honest. cant wait for the full review!!!
Any bidet in F lavatory?
I'll be curious to see the full menu, the western(?) food items look kinda boring. The flight looked like fun tho!
Wow, very nice Ben! Looking forward to the full review.
Very clever from a cost perspective.
Low fixed cost.
High variable cost.
So it hurts less when the F cabin is empty.
They let business class passengers use the front toilet if no one is in first class.
Curious how was the bedding ? Did you get any sleep ?
Ben,
By constantly mentioning Air Cote d'Ivoire as your last and imminent FC review, I am afraid you have already blown it. They will be waiting for you and there is no chance you'll receive the same treatment as Mr Anybody FC. It's not like you can change your name or wear a false beard.
The only way, I think, that you may save the review, is sending someone else, maybe from your office, maybe...

The only way, I think, that you may save the review, is sending someone else, maybe from your office, maybe a lesser known fellow blogger(Josh Cahill is already burnt) to see the real "First Class" and then, if you still wish, follow as yourself and compare. And this not guaranteed, as, if they ever sell FC apart from you, and I think not, I think not, it will be to passengers with a very different and more local profile. Anybody else who can afford FC will most likely choose "La Premiere"
This is not an anti-Cote d'Ivoire rant, but the experience of someone who has worked and lived there a long time, me.
You make a good point. Although, if Air Cote d'Ivoire throws a party just for him, I'd still love to read about it.
I personally see Ben's final 1st class cabin on his list more as a celebration than anything else. And, if the airline does a good job, then the more reason to celebrate.
not sure if this is a serious comment but LOL if you think AIR COTE D'IVOIRE is tracking potential customers online and going to provide immaculate service for that reason
OH YES they are... Never underestimate the Ivorian ego, and overestimating it is impossible. The mere existence of their FC, when Ethiopian which has a hundred times their world exposure does not have one, is sufficient proof.
It is really quite simple: I think that they have never sold their FC, but I may be wrong by a few units.

Every time FC sells to someone they do not know (I do not mean when they upgrade such or such local minister or CEO), a couple of young gophers are sent on a cyber fishing expedition, that's how it works, and they will even thoroughly scrub that row before . But as I said before, that class is not to sell but to upgrade local dignitaries. Lucky's trip as a paying FC customer will be heralded within the company many days in advance.
One suggestion, Lucky: Do one way on ACI's FC and the other way in "La Première", and report to us a point by point comparison.
Given the cost...not sure if its worth it over the J class product...
not sure why a caviar course is still a thing....such a niche thing
Because it's just evocative of luxury. Lobsters used to be food for poor people and now it's food for rich people. Potato, po-tah-to.
As far as I'm concerned, luxury is declining to eat anything when the FAs want to feed you.
And agree that business class has gotten so good that first class becomes mostly unnecessary (and something that even corporations will not pay for other than for their most senior executives as a perk). But if you have the money, hey, why not.
What a great preview review Thank you, Lucky. Tells you that even something like AA first class could be elevated with better ground service, but the operator needs to be committed to delivering on service consistently. Starlux first class seems better than first class on Thai Airways and Korean Air, though I myself am curious how much KE F has improved since you last gave them a quite negative review (probably justifiably so); maybe Starlink...

Starlux first class seems better than first class on Thai Airways and Korean Air, though I myself am curious how much KE F has improved since you last gave them a quite negative review (probably justifiably so); maybe Starlink WiFi, a new F lounge at ICN, and better catering in lounge and on board will put them back in the top ten. Not sure if JX F beats out Qatar or Qantas to make your top ten, given how strong their flagship first class lounges are in Doha and Sydney, respectively, and I guess I’m still partial to operators with A380s, especially for first class. Very curious how you update your best first class list. But I also know many new first class products are on the horizon from EY, BA, QF, SQ, and CX, plus supposedly also from QR and KE, so there might a lot more shuffling of the rankings in the coming months and years, especially after the 777X enters commercial service.
Nothing would ruin an immaculate flight experience like being presented with a Dodgers logo. Come on, Starlux, Kai-Wei Teng started his career as a Giant!
Agreed, I can imagine that could rub some people in the wrong way.
100%. i saw that and was instantly turned off lol.
Hong-Chih Kuo better 😁
Really excited for the full review! Now the question that I didn’t hear answered… once factoring in the high price difference between J & F… does perceived value of F decrease? (Especially when thinking of their competitors like JL, NH, SQ, etc). Have a great trip!
Food: looks so yummy and the dinnerware looks very refined. Importantly, they kept @Ben very well fed!
Amenity kit: suuuuuuper cool and well stocked.
PJs: fanciest I've ever seen (in photos).
Ground and onboard service: seems to go above and beyond.
Miscellaneous: I still feel they should install a simple curtain rather than having FAs educating every single J passenger who wants to use the forward lavatory.
Honestly, I expected an easy entry into your Top 10 F list. It still looks great, but I expected an even grander wow factor. AFAIK, the day blankets are Loro Piana (branded). I do like the online ordering in advance to prevent massive (and expensive) food waste. Better to preorder and then have actual high-quality stuff. Looking forward to the full review of the flights and lounges.
you are the only i have seen who raves about an on board shower.
This looks awesome! Looking forward to hearing more about the lounge and your connecting flight. My interest in trying Starlux F is firmly piqued now!
Was the palate cleanser somehow evocative of a "pick off" move to first base with the LA Dodgers branded napkin and the dental floss pick? That's a new one.
Nice flight!
I think you want this partnership to be more "Inside Baseball" than it actually is.
Did it feel strange without anything providing business and first class cabins?
Definitely looks impressive! Next trip to Asia, I may consider buying the miles to experience it once, though I'd probably look at the one-way from TPE, since PHX isn't going to have much of a ground experience.
I would argue that Starlux first class ground service exceeds La Première. The latter is great in Paris, and sure, AF does its best at outstations, but Starlux's offer of a VIP/GA terminal at every single station is several levels above whatever AF can pull with some third party lounge in Burgas, no matter how exclusive arrangements they make.
Love the pajamas, I think it should be the gift for this month
OMG I haven't read the review yet but I'm so happy to see this!
Those PJs are $1,200 USD! Hopefully, you get to keep them
Unless they are silk, which I highly doubt, they are not $1.2k. Probably just branded.
Good catch, their press release mentions these PJs in F being 100% organic cotton. The pricey ($1.2K) PJs that Huntsman sells on their site are silk like you said.
Niccce. (Random, but, good on them for going with Aesop!)
Glad you got your money's (kinda) worth!
those pajamas are sickkkkkkk wow. usually the PJs from airlines are boring as hell
