Hawaii’s newest luxury hotel has just opened, and it will surely prove to be very popular.

Basics of the Rosewood Kona Village

The much anticipated Rosewood Kona Village has opened as of July 1, 2023. The resort is located on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island, only a 15-minute drive from Kona International Airport (KOA). For those familiar with the area, this property is near the Four Seasons Hualalai, generally regarded as the best property on the island.

The Rosewood spans 81 acres, with 150 standalone guest hales (standalone, palm thatch roof structures), each with a private lanai, an outdoor shower, and a sense of seclusion. Accommodations are a minimum of 600 square feet.

Beyond that, Kona Village features several dining outlets (including the original Shipwreck Bar and Talk Story Bar), an Asaya Spa, two outdoor pools, tennis courts, a gym, a cultural center, and a complimentary house car.

For context, the Kona Village complex dates back all the way to the 1960s. However, it was closed in 2011 due to heavy damage from a tsunami, and has now finally reopened as a Rosewood, after an extensive renovation. This follows Rosewood signing a management contract with global real estate investment company Kennedy Wilson.

Rosewood Kona Village pricing & how to book

It goes without saying luxury hotel prices have increased considerably since the start of the pandemic, and the pricing at the Rosewood reflects that. Rates currently start at $1,850 per night. I appreciate that Rosewood’s website has a rate calendar, allowing you to easily compare rates for months at a time.

For stays through December 15, 2023, the hotel has an opening offer, for a $150 resort credit per room, or $350 resort credit per suite.

Rosewood Kona Village rates

You’re best off booking Rosewood properties through a Rosewood Elite travel advisor, as that’s typically going to be the best deal — Ford is happy to help with these inquiries, and can be reached at [email protected].

This won’t cost you anything extra, and a Rosewood Elite agent will be able to add extra perks for your stay. What value can a Rosewood Elite travel advisor add?

  • Daily breakfast for up to two people per bedroom
  • Complimentary one-category room upgrade upon arrival (based on availability)
  • A welcome amenity and note
  • Additional property specific elite enhanced amenities, which vary by property; these may include a $100 credit per stay

A few further things to note:

  • Rosewood Elite perks can be combined with whatever promotion Rosewood is offering on its website directly, including the opening offer
  • Booking through Rosewood Elite is better than booking through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, because upgrades are prioritized through Rosewood’s own proprietary program

Bottom line

The Rosewood Kona Village has opened as of July 2023. Those who like the Big Island will no doubt be excited about this, given that this marks the return of the Kona Village development. This is probably 2023’s most anticipated Hawaii hotel opening, so hopefully it lives up to the hype.

What do you make of the Rosewood Kona Village?

My husband and I stayed at Kona Village in the 70's also and many times after. I have several souvenirs from the village. We can't even come close to paying for a hale at the new prices. Do you think I might be able to trade in my old souvenirs for a cheaper rate??? We're now in our 80's and would love one last stay at such a wonderful place. I also have many price brochures showing how the rates have gone up. But not this bad!!! So sad.

I was staying at Kona Village the night of the tsunami in 2011. The staff were so amazing and genuinely cared about our safety and comfort. I can’t wait to book a stay to see such a special place come back to life.

I have stayed at the old Kona Village, and the new version I find repulsive. Both in the cost to stay there, and the fact it is so obviously Rosewood.See Myakoba and Little Dix Bay (ruined)

A few years ago I rescued the iconic bench from the surf. The bench was featured in ads during the 70s and 80s
As of today, the bench is high and dry. I hope the restoration crews save the bench!

My wife and I were married at Kona Village Resort in April, 1976. We restated our vows 30 years later at the Resort. We have returned 55 times over the years. We brought family members and booked multiple hales. It is our favorite resort destination. We were hoping to return in April, but will be fortunate to return later on in the year.

FYI, Kona Village is located on the Kona Coast of Hawaii Island. The Kohala Coast begins about a 20 minute drive north of the resort. Hence the name Kona Village. It is located in the resource management district (ahupua’a) of Kaʻūlupulehu in the land district (moku ʻāina) of Kona. It is a good idea to get these things right, because if you ask someone to direct you to the Kohala Coast, you will be given directions that are past where you are going.

I worked there during the 70's, when it was such a breath taking magical place. I'm so glad that it will be magical once again!!

In the 70’s, I stayed there which was called Kona Village back then. No roadway to the property. You flew in on Royal Hawaiian Airways from Honolulu was the only way. You were greeted at plane side with a drink and a flower lei upon arrival. Great memories of an enjoyable stay.
