Staples now selling iPads!

In the interest of full disclosure, One Mile At A Time earns a referral bonus for anyone that’s approved through some of the below links. These are the best publicly available offers that we have found for each card. One of my favorite perks of the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card and Ink Business Cash℠ Credit Card are the 3x points on the first $150,000 and 5x points on the first $25,000, respectively, spent annually at office supply stores. And it seems there’s some exciting news on that front for Apple fans.

Earlier this year Staples began selling select Apple accessories, though just a couple of days ago Staples announced they’d also begin selling iPads and iPods online and in their US stores. Prices seem to be the same as you’d find directly with Apple.

So now you can earn 3x-5x points on iPad/iPod purchases at Staples. It’s worth noting that Staples is also part of the Chase Ultimate Rewards online shopping mall, which offers up to an additional 3x points per dollar (though I’ve seen higher bonuses in the past).

The catch is that the terms & conditions seem to suggest that purchases of technology, software, and electronics aren’t eligible for points through the mall, though I’m not sure how that works in practice:

Not eligible on purchases made with coupon or discount codes that are not found on this site. Shopping cart must be empty prior to accessing Staples through this site to be eligible. Not eligible on gift cards, gift certificates or any other similar cash equivalents. Not eligible on Promotional Products, technology, software, and electronics.

Regardless, even without the online shopping mall bonus I’d say this is still the best value for purchasing an iPad. In the past I’d go through to save on sales tax, though I’ll take 5x Ultimate Rewards points over that any day.

(Tip of the hat to PhatMiles)

  1. I was surprised to hear they weren’t selling them in the US. Staples has been selling iPads and other Mac hardware in Canada for years!

  2. What is Chase’s policy for extended warranty and theft protection? One of the huge advantages of using an Amex card to buy electronics like an iPad is that they will cover the product for an extra year on top of the manufacture’s warranty. You might want to consider that when making an expensive purchase.

  3. Why do you prefer 5x over paying no sales tax? For an extra 4 miles per dollar, you’re adding 8.875% (in NYC), which means you’re paying 2.22 cents per mile. In Seattle I believe it’s even higher. Am I missing something?
