That is one option. I too recently planned a similar trip (though using AA miles) and am flying Japan Airlines JFK-NRT-SIN and the return I am flying Cathay HKG to JFK (I am doing some intermediate travel between the legs).

If your ultimate goal is accrue as many AA miles as possible you may want to consider flying AA to/from Toyko or Hong Kong and continuing on to Singapore via JAL or CX. Only a Y fare ticket accrues 100% on CX, while B and H fares only accrue 75% redeemable miles (and 50% EQMs). On JAL it is slightly better than CX (Y and B fares get 100% redeemable and EQMs, while other fares get 70% or 50% redeemable miles). Business class is similar – you will accrue more EQMs and I think more redeemable miles flying AA metal. Well, at least on an AA ticket. Buy the ticket from AA and fly on JAL or CX if you can.
