Marriott AMEX Card Not Honouring Full Points for Foreign Transactions?

Marriott AMEX Card Not Honouring Full Points for Foreign Transactions?

  1. Anonymous Guest

Long story short, I booked directly with the JW Marriott hotel in Seoul. When my statement closed, I got only 2x points per $1 USD instead of the 6x I was expecting. The transaction was listed as “lodging” but I noticed that the business came through the Korean department store name.

I contacted AMEX about it, and they said that because it is a subsidiary hotel and because it was a foreign transaction, I only get 2x the point instead.

Has anyone else encountered a similar issue? This incident shows me that it defeats the purpose of owning this card for what is a global brand. It also shows that it doesn’t pay to book directly if the hotels are not even going to list themselves as Marriott hotels. Thanks for your input!
