I just tried to change a ticket purchased with aeroplan miles (UA metal to LH metal) and was told not only would I be assessed the $90 fee but also the surcharges that LH charges. Is this a new thing?

Are you changing your itinerary [I]after[/I] flying the first segment or before? I believe the ‘trick’ worked when you changed subsequent flights after flying the first leg. I know for sure that if you’re changing any part of the itinerary [I]before[/I] flying any of the segments, you are charged the 90CAD fee and LH surcharges
